  • Hellbound: Hellraiser II became the first sequel to to Clive Barker's original. Taking a much more mythic and fantastical edge on the story, does this sequel deliver a solid follow-up?

I actually prefer this to the original. I like the exploration of hell. So glad that Larry wasn't in hell cause that wouldn't make any sense from a writing perspective. But Awesome review Cody. And thank you again for tackling this franchise.✌
And Clive Barkers horror is very strange. And the Cenobites getting taken out was stupid, but after thinking on it, I think the fact that leviathan was attached too Chanard, made him more powerful. But still??????

larry was actually supposed to be there and in the climax he originally saved his daughter from the evil Doctor Cenobite and in the end, his soul gets free and goes to a better place. The script was rewritten when that actor refused to return without a pay raise.

The only reason the doctor wipes the floor with the cenobites is because Leviathan directly was connected to the doctor. That being said I still hated that he wrecked Pinhead and the cenobites so easily. Great review as always.

I really wish like maybe they would have had Channard try to fight the other Cenobites and get clocked, and THEN Leviathan would have connected to him and he would have beaten them. It would have made Leviathan connecting with him feel much more impacted and give more weight TO Leviathan's power.

Another thing I hate about Dr Channard is when he becomes a Cenobite he starts making cheesy doctor puns like "The doctor is in", "I recommend amputation" and "I'm taking over this operation." He basically becomes Nightmares 4-6 Freddy Krueger. Pinhead was created to be an intelligent, cultured character similar to Hannibal Lecter instead of either a jokester like later Freddy or a silent killer like Michael or Jason. Then in the 2nd film they bring in this character who's the exact thing Pinhead was created not to be. And him looking like he has a giant dick on his head makes me not take him seriously.

I know right! Hellraiser was made in a time where horror movies were starting to become more comedic, partly because of Freddy Kruger's success. Hellraiser chose to reject this and was made to be scary and threatening and not just a comedy featuring some generic masked killer. However the doctor totally rejects this idea. Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of campiness, but it just doesn't belong in a more serious franchise like Hellraiser.

According to the blu ray documentary, Originally there was going to be a bigger fight scene between the Cenobites and the Doctor. I think that would have empathised their regained humanity and would have shown that the realisation of that revelation that they were human shook them a lot more prominently. The Engineer from the first film was going to reappear too. It's my understanding they even built a few props and would have been a proper gory fight. However the studio producing this movie had the budget tightened so there wasn't enough money to make a complete fight. I hope the new Hellraisers being produced include this plot thread at some point. I don't know the specifics but it was going to be bloody. I took solace in the fact that the Doctor was attached to Hell's God Leviathan and had more ... Power over them and the advantage that they had recently discovered their Identity. But I do get that the way it was done, the Cenobites were taken out too easy.

Facts and doctors death was shitty and rushed so that plus cenobites deaths are the only negatives for me and this movie and Julia’s flesh flying off for no reason

    • @roguebritgravy1
      @roguebritgravy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It does look rushed but I find it pretty memorable as his head's pulled apart by the jaw. Whose to say he's dead? He could still be a half head attached to Leviathan. Looking. Another lost soul. Julia's case is true, its very random for hell to suck back Julia at that place in particular. Maybe her bargain had been fulfilled in Leviathan's eyes and was... Recalled. Although I do want a better, more explained, ending to her character as to why that happened. I did like the look of hell and you do see how the Cenobites get made. I can get past the Cenobites death. They just discovered they were once human, the revelation shook them. Interestingly this was the first movie I watched in the Hellraiser franchise. Before the first one.

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 is me by far the superior film between the first 2 installments. Just something about the concept of being trapped in an environment that you're never getting out of in search of other worldly pleasures is absolutely terrifying to me. That was the thing I absolutely loved about the original Hellraiser and it gets further elaborated upon in this movie. The concept of Hell basically being a personal hell for every soul within it is something that I find to be one of the most petrifying yet realistic takes on what Hell would actually be and is absolutely brilliant. Envisioning and realizing a concept like that is absolutely genius and this movie has given me a new profound respect for Clive Barker. A concept like this could actually be incorporated into other forms of media where Hell and other dimensional entities play a prominent role and would be just as effective

What made the first two movies so unique was the very concept of Hell. It's not an afterlife, but a horrible physical dimension; a parallel universe totally alien to us humans. You open the box, they come to this world and take you to theirs, to give you "pain and pleasure" for all eternity. You can be moral and virtuous as much as you want, that won't save you. Their world is ruled by a giant diamond-shaped thing called Leviathan that spins in the sky and emits beams of black light. We have absolutely no idea what it is nor how long it has existed. And all of this was so brilliantly depicted by C. Young's dark and brooding score.
They completely abandoned this approach starting from part 3. It's now typical Abrahamic hell, where sinners go after death. And Pinhead is just your average slasher villain, spouting cheesy one-liners (or even worse, he appears as some sort of moral judge at the end of several movies that are Hellraiser only in title). One of the most original concepts in horror movies history ruined for no reason at all. Shame :(

Hellraiser II is my favorite entry in the series.
Dr. Channard is my favorite addition. I know it can be disappointing to see him mop the flor with the cenobites. But there's a core difference between him and the others. He is a villain. They are not (Pinhead turns into one starting with III because America - as usual - didn't understand the appeal to foreign franchises.) He was a monster even as a human. Remember when he gave the inmate a knife to cut himself up? Pinhead himself sees himself as benevolent. His own flesh is cut open in several areas. His head is ... well you know. To him that's pleasure. He doesn't go around randomly killing people like the other slashers. If you summon him (and only then) he comes to share his pleasures with you. Even Frank said they blured the line between lust and agony. You also see it as he licks his lips shortly before being torn apart. Then his personal hell in this movie is women promising him pleasures but he can never touch them. So no violence, no physical harm, implying that to him pain is not hell.
What again goes back to: The cenobites don't do what they do to torture people. They do it because they themselfes experience it as extatic.
Channard is an evil bastard. And he knows he's an evil bastard and enjoys the fact. The scene were he cuts up an entire hospital room just for shits and giggles - He is fuckin evil. So it turns out in hell being pure evil is stronger.

Together with 1, 5 and probably the recent one the best of the series (although I enjoy bits & bobs here and there). And yes, it does look dated at times - but that's why I can't wait for the reboot. They literally can go in any direction, expand on the lore, make it as twisted as they can but with 2021 quality. So here's me crossing my fingers than they finally do Barkers imagination justice.

I gotta say that I feel as though I've grown out of this franchise. I agree with all of your criticisms Cody. I feel like watching these reviews helped me really pinpoint just why I feel the way I do about this franchise. First, it's bone dry in the environment in which every film takes place in. Not one of these films really comes to life through the set, you can tell it's just a set. Second, the main demonic entities are weak, when all is said and done. Pinhead dies as many times as he kills! And finally, I feel like the filming makes this franchise feel like edgy early 90s episodes of a horror tv show. Like these movies look like they're on par with an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Xena, or Hercules. Not that those shows are/were bad... But for these to be "classics" they're devoid of any feeling of the gravitas that separates film from tv. Thanks for the great content Cody!

My feelings on this movie are that I love the atmosphere and design of Hell, but I'm not a fan of the fact that it continues with Kirsty, as the first film set up the idea that the box would find a new group of characters to torment. Going back to Kirsty feels very forced here. And remember, this takes place like a day later so Julia's somehow gone from a weak submissive to Queen of Hell in a single day. Sure.
Those aspects could be perhaps forgivable, but then there's the shitty Cenobite doctor who lays waste to the actual interesting Cenobites within seconds. Just when Kirsty and Pinhead were in the middle of some decent character development.
So yeah, overall the direction is good, but the story itself is trash.

1.) Why was Kirsty in a Psychiatrics Ward? How did she get there? The previous film ended with her and her boyfriend out near some burning pits watching as a bone dragon demon thing flew off with the box. What? Did they go to the police and say "Yeah! I'd like to report my dad and step mom being murdered by my undead uncle who made a deal with demons!"
2.) We clearly saw her father's house burning to the ground at the end of the previous film. How is it suddenly standing with police looking around?

Actually even here in the sequel Pinhead was not yet the lead which is why they get wiped out so easily. Still don’t like it. Julia was meant to be the lead villain of the franchise going forward. Part of why she came back for this movie.

Most of this movie is great, on par with the original even. However, I absolutely HATE the climax. Dr. Chanard becoming a super Centobite and easily taking out the actually cool Centobites from the first film is terrible.

    Pinhead: HAHAHA!

This is my favorite of the franchise, but it BARELY beats the first one out. Like 100/100 and 99.99/100. What I like most about it is that we see more of Hell and more Cenobites. I agree, Channard and Pinhead should have been a bigger fight, but as someone else pointed out, it's not just Channard, he was physically attached to Leviathan. And Pinhead may have been so used to dominating that he underestimated Channard a little.

@@edmonddantes563 Yes, I think any "re-" titled sequel tends to be a bad sign. Not every time, but often enough. Reborn, refueled, rebooted, remastered, resurrected...

Never seen the movies, but I wonder if this is the Halloween Resurrection of the Hellraiser Series for the Hellraiser fans. After hearing how Pinhead and the Cenobites just immediately are disposed of, I wouldn’t be surprised

The cenobites lost their power when they turned against Leviathan and rediscovered their humanity. The doctor cenobite was a proxy for Leviathan, hence the tentacle that was attached to his head.

HELLRAISER 3 was the first horror movie I was introduced to
I was 4 or 5 and I was at this house my parents took me to
    With couple older kids
I enjoyed it they thought it was cool
HELLRAISER 1-3 I enjoy the rest ehhh
Can’t wait to see your review on the third
It’s not better than the first and second
So don’t expect too much haha

I would love to see a Freddy vs Pinhead movie. It would be extremely easy combining the two because it’s shown in dream warriors Kristin was able to bring people into her dreams when she wanted so I don’t see the problem with somebody bringing in the puzzle box into their dream and summoning pinhead to try and stop Freddy from killing them.
Freddy would have to win though

I love hellraiser 2 but I know it's flawed. I love fantasy horror like it and nightmare. If cody finds this one decent... it's going get ugly. Hellraiser 1 and 2, mouth of madness, thing, halloween, nightmare 1, 3 and it are always fun for me to watch.

The movie would have been better had Andrew Robinson returned as Larry, Kirsty's dad. I have read that the original script had Kirsty and the deaf girl rescuing Larry from the dimension, where he was in the room being tortured by Frank. That would have been interesting.
