  • Pinhead and the Cenobites are back and bringing with them a reign of carnage. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth takes a much more simple and slasher-fueled approach. Does it make the movie entertaining or dull?

I remember not being a fan of this one, but it had some of that stupid "early nineties" charm to it. The cenobite whose evil powers is CD-throwing was a sign of where the whole series would go.

It's a complete betrayal of the whole idea that made the original great. Namely the ambiguity of the cenobites. In the original story they're not the villains, two humans driven by their own perversions and lust are the villains. The cenobites are just referees. But leave it for Weinstein to come in and say "OH THEY'RE DEMONS! ADD EXPLOSIONS AND HAVE PINHEAD BE A CACKLING FREDDY KNOCK-OFF". People whine about the sequels, but both INFERNO and JUDGMENT have more in common with the feel of the original idea of HELLRAISER (even if JUDGMENT introduces angels it does so in a SPAWN-like way that feels more akin to HELLRAISER).
HELLRAISER III is the ultimate Bob Weinstein HELLRAISER. A movie that feels like it was produced by a 13-year old meathead. If it wasn't a HELLRAISER movie I'd probably have more fun with it, but it kind of bugs me as a HELLRAISER sequel. I suppose it works if you treat it like a stand alone tale.

Pinhead really started to pick up his one-liner game in this movie. I think the first 2/3 has a lot of scary and tense moments, goes off the rails a bit in the third act. Best of the ending is Pinhead in the church, great imagery there.

Yes this is my second favorite film of the franchise because it’s the only one that’s about pinhead. He was deserving of a backstory like Freddy Krueger. Also Doug Bradley does a great job has been head to the point where you don’t really care about the whatever performances from everyone else

  • @DarthRushy

I have a soft spot for Hellraiser III - it might not have the atmosphere of the first two, but it has Doug Bradley front and center, and the subplot with his human self is really interesting. Aside from the first, this is the only Hellraiser I truly enjoy.

Yeah I respect that, Phantasm is my favorite Horror Franchise but I also love Pumpkinhead, Sleepaway Camp, Demons, Re Animator, Return of the Living Dead, Basket Case, Blood Feast, The Omen Trilogy, Ginger Snaps, even NOES as series I can name that I say don’t have a single bad entry or something I wasn’t having that flopped. There is lots of other Horror Franchises I love to a certain point like Halloween OG 78-H6 Curse Of Michael Myers(am interested in 2018 reboot and Halloween Kills not into anything between 6 and the 2018 reboot), TXCM-Leatherface TXCM3(the 2003 remake was cool), Hellraiser OG-Hellraiser Bloodline(Hellraiser Deader was the only decent movie that I give merit to as being anything after Bloodline), Wishmaster 1 and 2, Warlock 1 and 2, Night Of The Living Dead-Land Of The Dead, The Howling-The Howling 6 The Freaks(still have to see New Moon Rises but Reborn was horrendous), all Child’s Play/Chucky movies except Seed, FT13th-FT13th IV Final Chapter so yeah I have my here n there's.

The first Hellraiser is a masterpiece. Hellbound is an unfocused mess. Hell on Earth is a crass commercialization of the story, and I can't say much nice about it except in comparison to most of the sequels that followed--namely that it never goes to space and that it's not a repurposed script that was originally unrelated to Hellraiser. One of the worst things about it is its overuse of Pinhead, inexplicably making him the main antagonist and thereby completely demystifying him.

Either this movie or Bloodline are my favorite in the whole series that are a tier above the OG, for one the main character Joey is easily one of my favorite Final Girls of all time I also find her backstory of her Father in Vietnam interesting too and how Pinhead would manipulate this emotion, I also like seeing Elliot Spencer aka Pinhead when he was human you see the good redemption side of Pinhead essentially it was good to see the dialogue between him and Joey is some of the BEST things I have seen seeing Elliot Spencer in a war ridden barren wasteland, add to that the new Cenobites I thought were real kool as well as freakin Armored Saint playing in a nightclub just before Pinhead massacres everyone in there. This movie also expands lore on Pinhead’s mortal form you learn more of his backstory before he became victim of the Lament Box and became Pinhead with the aftermath of WWI and how he became more Misanthropic and Nihilistic all together and indulge in Libertine fantasies this led to him crossing path with the Lament Box and the rest is history. This movie is one of my top 2 favorite if not favorite for its astounding Storytelling and Lore Building alone added with perks of new kool Cenobites, awesome score and you have a masterpiece that is this movie. Then Hellraiser Bloodline does well by bringing the story to full circles as it could’ve ended with that movie as it goes into the Origins of the Lament Box itself. That’s why Bloodline and Hell On Earth are the BEST movies in the series IMO.

First is that it’s far too polished and MTV-esque, like Nightmare 4. The grit and grime and darkness of the first two movies is nowhere to be found here, and I think that helped make Hellraiser stand out from the other horror franchises. The big studio polish here takes away some of that charm.
But my bigger problem is Pinhead and the direction he goes here. Pinhead was all about order and structure and rules; he wasn’t evil for the sake of it, and it could even be argued that he wasn’t evil. He was just a soldier. The end of Hellbound sets up that his original identity, Eliot Spencer, has escaped the curse of Pinhead, leaving this demon behind. Because of this, the Pinhead in H3 is all id, no humanity whatsoever. Story-wise, it makes sense. But it takes away what made Pinhead special. People could reason and bargain with Pinhead in the first two movies. Here, he’s just a bloodthirsty maniac, and … we’ve seen that. It’s nothing special. It’s been done.

Ha I'm the same I geek out when I see a metal band in a film. Would be cool to see a video of 10 ten surprise musician or metal band cameos in films.

I was thinking you would shit all over this installment. I know you probably will not like what is to come. Bloodline is fucking awesome though!!🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘 Cool you noticed the metal flowing freely in this film's veins!!

Not one of my favorites because it has a very different feel to it than the others and I always thought this was their attempt to make Pinhead more mainstream and into another Jason, Freddy etc. That being said it's a fun movie and I still enjoy it.

I'll give it that its nice seeing the dynamics between Pinhead and Eliott and the nightclub massacre scene. But, this is where the Hellraiser franchise took the dive away from the Gothic quality and mystical exploration it had.

Like many others here, I rather like this movie. More than 2 but not quite as much as the original. Still, it's a fun gore ride and I'll never forget the girl getting skinned and "eaten" by the statue. I was 17 or so when this came out and even at that age that kinda freaked me out a bit. Not scared me or anything, just I guess grossed me out is a better way of saying it. The night club scene is an all time favorite of mine (and I still think the vicera clean up games got the idea from that scene lol) and I loved Terry Farrel in this. It helps that I'm a huge fan of hers from DS9 and her portrayal of Jadzia Dax :D

The ending to part III, with the unique building puzzle box design will make much more sense once you watch part IV. They touch on this and it makes the ending to part III make a lot more sense.
I personally love the Hellraiser films, ESPECIALLY the first four films. I think they're amazing and criminally underrated. I also really, really enjoyed the last film in the series called Hellraiser Judgment.
Parts V thru IX are their own thing.
Individual, stand alone stories that don't have much to do with the first four films (aside from part VI).
If you ever read the comic book series from Epic Comics back in the late 80s/early 90s, parts V thru IX feel like those stories....just individual, stand alone tales involving Pinhead and the other cenobites.
Also, when you watch part VI: Hellseeker, watch the individual DVD and watch the special features. The unedited scene between Kirsty and Pinhead makes things make more sense and ties directly into the first two films. Why they didn't include this full scene in the actual movie is beyond me.

I wanna say that my brothers and I had this on the same tape as Return of the LIving Dead 3, because it was on the same premium movie channel preview on the same night and we would pop a tape in before bed and just record all night. As tweens, we actually much prefered RotLD 3 and really only watched Hellraiser 3 once.

Well after the next one is where the franchise starts going down hill fast I do like the first 4 but my god after 4 you are in hell for sure cody especially with 6 and the one that shouldn’t be realized as a movie

It feels like H3 tried to turn Pinhead into Freddy, which he shouldn't be. Still, it's fun and I wish Kirsty was in it. Human Elliot Spencer and Unbound Pinhead work for me because Doug Bradley is so damn charming.
