I love the story about how the producers and director saw this at a sneak preview and one of the audience members shout, "Hey! The guys who made this are here." And they ran from the mob.

Linda Blair has stated that the script that she signed on to was very, very different to what they ended up shooting.
She said it was originally a great script. But with all the rewrites over and over it completely changed and she was locked into a contract.
I was lucky enough to meet her a few years ago and she detailed a lot of that. Although she’s publicly said this many times too.

Agree. Exorcist 3 is actually more enjoyable because there are more excellent actors playing off each other and the addition of some humor in critical places. There are a few really creepy things in 3 that you can be scared by, but not traumatized like the Reagan/Demon character which frightened me for decades.

@@emilengen7825 I have and I think it's definitely inferior to the theatrical cut. Not only from a technical standpoint due to the original footage shot between Kinderman and Brad Dourif not being well taken care off for 25+ years, but I do prefer the reshot scenes including Jason Miller, giving it a direct tie to the original film, plus the padded cell location is more atmospheric and just fits more with the scenes versus the brick wall that made it look like a high school stage play. And the ending is way less satisfying, I understand why William Peter Blatty was mad that his film was changed, maybe it worked better in the book, I haven't read it. But, the climax in the theatrical cut felt earned, yes it is a little jarring, especially with the random priest that shows up, but it felt like a proper buildup to what was established beforehand. I am glad that I watched it, but I don't think I'll watch it again.

I'm sure in the producers' head's they were thinking that this would be great since they got John Boorman, the director of the the acclaimed thriller "Deliverance," but instead they got the John Boorman that also directed "Zardoz," which is also pretty batshit insane. Luckily Boorman rebounded with "Excalibur" where his brand of trippy visuals and aural weirdness fit Arthurian legend far better than the grounded supernatural realism of the Exorcist.
Fun tidbit, they actually had Linda Blair do her own stunt where she's standing on the edge of a 41 story building (which happened to be 666 Fifth Avenue). Its probably the best looking shot of this terrible movie.

Director John Boorman has claimed that he couldn't match the darkness of the original film because he just didn't want to. He literally said: "I have daughters, I don't want to make a film about torturing a child," so he set out to make a film with a more positive tone. Boorman was also responsible for 1972's Deliverance, so I know he can be a fine director. Gives me a sort of morbid curiosity to seek out this film.

    how bad is it
    regarding The Exorcist II:The Heretic
In a 2005 interview, Boorman remarked:
It all comes down to audience expectations. The film that I made, I saw as a kind of riposte to the ugliness and darkness of The Exorcist - I wanted a film about journeys that was positive, about good, essentially. And I think that audiences, in hindsight, were right. I denied them what they wanted and they were pissed off about it - quite rightly, I knew I wasn't giving them what they wanted and it was a really foolish choice. The film itself, I think, is an interesting one - there's some good work in it - but when they came to me with it I told John Calley, who was running Warner Bros. then, that I didn't want it. "Look", I said, "I have daughters, I don't want to make a film about torturing a child", which is how I saw the original film. But then I read a three-page treatment for a sequel written by a man named William Goodhart and I was really intrigued by it because it was about goodness. I saw it then as a chance to film a riposte to the first picture. But it had one of the most disastrous openings ever - there were riots! And we recut the actual prints in the theatres, about six a day, but it didn't help of course and I couldn't bear to talk about it, or look at it, for years.
Stanley Kubrick turned down the offer to direct. When John Boorman accepted, Kubrick warned him that the only way a sequel to "The Exorcist" would succeed is if it were to be more graphic and horrific than the original.
Variety wrote, "Exorcist II is not as good as The Exorcist. It isn't even close". BBC film critic Mark Kermode stated, "Exorcist II is demonstrably the worst film ever made. It took the greatest film ever made and trashed it in a way that was on one level farcically stupid and on another level absolutely unforgivable. Everyone involved in this, apart from Linda Blair, should be ashamed for all eternity".
William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, recalled hearing a story in which angry audience members at Exorcist II's first public performance began chasing Warner Bros. executives down the street within the first ten minutes of the screening.Friedkin saw half an hour of the film: "I was at Technicolor and a guy said 'We just finished a print of Exorcist II, do you wanna have a look at it?' And I looked at half an hour of it and I thought it was as bad as seeing a traffic accident in the street. It was horrible. It's just a stupid mess made by a dumb guy - John Boorman by name, somebody who should be nameless, but in this case should be named. Scurrilous. A horrible picture".
William Friedkin, director of the first film, told a story, recalled to by a Warner Bros. executive, at the Chicago Critics Film Festival in April 2013. Studio heads came to the sneak preview of "Exorcist II" in a limo, and told the drivers to go get fast food. They entered the auditorium, and within 10 minutes into the film, an audience member stood up, glanced into the crowd, and proclaimed: "The people who made this piece of shit are in this room!" 10 or 12 other audience members gathered to find the executives. The heads rushed out of the theater and realized that there were no cars to make their escape. They were subsequently chased down the street by a group of angry audience members.
The original, opening night version of this film was so poorly received that the audience at a theater on Hollywood Blvd. actually threw things at the screen to express their disgust when it was over.
William Peter Blatty, author of the original novel, reportedly had to stifle his own laughter upon viewing the film at the premiere.
Martin Scorsese was one of the few people who liked the film. "The picture asks: Does great goodness bring upon itself great evil? This goes back to the Book of Job; it's God testing the good. In this sense, Regan (Linda Blair) is a modern-day saint - like Ingrid Bergman in Europe '51 (1952), and in a way, like Charlie in Mean Streets (1973). I like the first Exorcist, because of the Catholic guilt I have, and because it scared the hell out of me; but The Heretic surpasses it. Maybe Boorman failed to execute the material, but the movie still deserved better than it got."
John Boorman confessed that "The sin I committed was not giving the audience what it wanted in terms of horror...There's this wild beast out there which is the audience. I created this arena and I just didn't throw enough Christians into it."
William Peter Blatty claimed to have been the first person to start laughing at the theater at which he saw the film, only to be followed by the other patrons ("You'd think we were watching The Producers (1967)).
Although it is often regarded as one of the worst sequels ever made, and one of the worst movies ever made in general, over the years it has developed a small cult following, especially among fans of John Boorman.
Quentin Tarantino is one of the few people who liked the film, even using a song by Ennio Morricone in The Hateful Eight (2015).
Critical reviews for the film were horrible and scathing at the time. It was one of the worst reviewed movies ever at the time. This can be see as ironic, as John Boorman deliberately toned down the gore and graphic sexual content compared to the first film, in favor of over the top Sci-fi imagery: (plagues of locusts, and other phantasmagoria not in the first movie). The film was still critically panned anyway. Whereas in the first film there were scathing reviews about how exploitative it was, for this film it was just the quality that was reviled. This is one of the more scathing criticisms of the film: ""Exorcist II is demonstrably the worst film ever made. It took the greatest film ever made and trashed it in a way that was on one level farcically stupid and on another level absolutely unforgivable. Everyone involved in this, apart from Linda Blair, should be ashamed for all eternity." (Mark Kermode)
The scene where Regan's demon manifestation seduces Father Lamont was originally set to be much more sexually explicit, graphic, and offensively grotesque. When Linda Blair and Richard Burton found out about it, both refused to do it. Richard Burton, who was 52 years old at the time and a notorious playboy, was not comfortable engaging in the scripted lewd acts with then 17-year-old Linda Blair, as he viewed her as a daughter figure. Blair herself viewed Burton as a sort of mentor and father figure and expressed discomfort in having to sexually entice him in such a lascivious manner. John Borman eventually agreed to tone down the scene, but none the less it was still an uncomfortable experience for both the actors.
This film, along with The Exorcist (1973) and The Exorcist III (1990), were serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer's favorite films. One of his surviving victims recalls seeing him watch this film repeatedly in a trance-like state.
On the night of the premiere, the movie was laughed off the screen. Things were tolerable until the "synchronizer" machine was introduced, and it went straight downhill from there.
John Boorman was originally offered the opportunity to direct The Exorcist (1973) but passed because he found the script repulsive. Instead, he made Zardoz (1974).
According to the film's co-producer Richard Lederer, Exorcist II was conceived as a relatively low-budget affair: "What we essentially wanted to do with the sequel was to redo the first movie... Have the central figure, an investigative priest, interview everyone involved with the exorcism, then fade out to unused footage, unused angles from the first film. A low-budget rehash - about $3 million - of The Exorcist (1973), a rather cynical approach to movie-making, I'll admit. But that was the start."
The film's producers deliberately intended the film to be less graphic in content and less dark in tone than its predecessor. In fact, they were expecting the Motion Picture Association of America to grant the film a PG rating as opposed to the R rating the first film got (or the X rating a few people felt it deserved). It got an R anyway.
William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty were repeatedly asked for ideas for a sequel, but turned the studio down on finding out that the producer assigned the project, Richard Lederer, wanted them to just make a quick-and-dirty sequel to exploit the first film's success. Instead, a screenplay was commissioned from William Goodhart, whose only other screenplay credit was Generation (1969). The exact contents of Goodhart's screenplay have never been made publicly known, but apparently mixed in the first film's themes with a lot of odd metaphysical symbolism.
I refuse to see The Exorcist II:The Heretic on grounds that it fuckin pissed on the legacy of a masterpiece what a fucken disgrace
personally it is unbefuckenbelievable that anyone would think that making a sequel that shits on a masterpiece would ever be a good idea
it is inconceivable and completely 1000% unfuckenbelievable it really is and I agree on how bad Exorcist II:The Heretic truly is and it’s undignified and a piece of dogshit

There are few things you have to know about Exorcist 2 before you watch it.
    1. Story was scrapped 4 times before it got in it's production. Original plot got more things and details of why is this happening. No other Regan, form of repossession. William Goodhart made a PERFECT sequel to The Exorcist, but John Boorman didn't liked the "Horror" aspect, which didn't made sense in a first place, because why you would still have a director who doesn't like the horror to film the horror film? Conclusion of the first script had more sense also, but again, John Boorman and Rospo Pallenberg scrapped it and made it all blew up. Like they had to be another exorcism of Regan.
    2. Characters - believe it or not, Phillip Lamont actually had to be Father Dyer. Yes, acting is poor, but reason of that is simple - none of them wanted to be in a movie like that, so they just did their best, not to make it good, but to finish it as soon as possible.
    3. Presentation - In first plan, Warner Bros., when they saw a finished product, wanted to scrap it and get back to the original script and take their time to make a good sequel. However, there were a couple of people that were already tired of filming and producing the film so they just said release it.
    4. Visuals - visuals are great for movie at that time. Exorcist 2 got nominated for best visual effects at that time (it's on Wikipedia)
    5. Actors - Casting is great, even perfect for a good sequel. Max Von Sydow immediately signed that he will be in this movie, liked the plot or not. He knew he will play a small part, so he signed it. In first plan, as I said, Father Dyer had to be in the movie, but original actor from first was busy at the time so they hired Burton and changed the character. Linda denied it for 3-4 months until she saw a script and casting. She signed it.
    6. Why is this sequel made? - Money. And answering unanswered questions. They showed what happened in Africa, when Merrin firstly fought the demon. And this didn't had to be a sequel either. Rather a continuation, in a different franchise. It had to be called just "The Heretic".
Before you judge a bad movie, check it's background and you will understand why it is bad.

@Cody Leach thanks for going through this for a review basically to let me know not to go through that shit ever!
I’ve never seen the original but, with how iconic the original is I think I may check that one out this October instead, I’m finally going to check out Nia DaCosta’s Candyman with my friend David tomorrow who we both are big fans of the original on Friday at 3:45pm which I absolutely cannot wait!
Without knowing too many specifics I have heard an almost universal opinion in most of the spoiler free reviews I’ve watched on TH-cam that the 3rd act is an absolutely convoluted mess however, I’m not going to take that to heart without actually seeing the film and making my own opinion for myself obviously but, I heard it’s much better than either of the original sequels that I haven’t seen, I’ve heard from friends of mine that Farewell to the Flesh is simply “ok, but nothing near the greatness of the 1992 original.”
Then I’ve heard Day of the Dead is basically just a bad porn film with Candyman in the middle of it is what I’ve constantly heard so, I may check out Farewell to the Flesh sometime but, I’ll probably never watch Day of the Dead ever in my lifetime because, I’ve heard it’s just so dreadful to get through.

When you said in the last review you wanted to learn more about the demon, I'm sure many of us were thinking, "Oh, just wait . . . "
Other franchises have perhaps fallen farther, but it's always taken multiple films to get from peak to trough; here it just took one. John Boorman has made some good movies (Point Blank, Deliverance, etc.) but sometimes he went and made something truly inexplicable like this. Supposedly he disliked the original movie, and wanted to make a sequel that was more 'uplifting.' If nothing else, the third film - directed by William Peter Blatty, the original author, and based on a sequel novel - will effectively wash the taste of this thing out of your mouth.
Occasionally one comes across a surprising defender of this: Pauline Kael actually liked it more than the original, as did Martin Scorsese (believe it or not).

    • @marcoslaureano5562
      @marcoslaureano5562 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actual the novel wasn't a direct "sequel", it was supposed to simply be called Legion and even though it's connected to the original story - it was meant to stand on it's own - but the studio foolishly slapped The part 3 title on it and it turned a lot of people off from seeing it. I remember seeing it at 13 with my best friend Michelle - who I ended up marrying - our first date was that movie. Man - What a shame, as I think part 3 is on par with the original and is possibly the greatest horror sequel of all time.

I originally saw the Exorcist in 1975 as a Catholic when I was 8 years old, it kinda f'ed me up for a long time. I can watch and enjoy it now since over 40 years have passed but when we saw it in the 70's it rocked us back on our asses. Lo and behold a mere 2 years later and we were ready to be taken to new levels with the sequel. Ahem!! we were shocked alright, we laughed, we cried we scratched our heads in amazement, what a bloody huge piece of garbage. My exception, this wasn't one of the worst movies we had seen it was THE WORST!!! To this day I've seen some complete train wrecks of films, but this takes the cake by a country mile sometimes bad is bad.
