Scandi, Puukko or Saber Blade?

  • Scandi, Puukko, Saber, and a myriad of other blade shapes. How do you choose? Especially if you’re one of those guys who can’t leave well enough alone and must modify things. But is it really that I can’t leave well enough alone? Or is it that knife makers just don’t know how to cross the finish line with the absolutely perfect execution of a design resulting in a knife that works right out of the box. It seems that so many come so close. In this video, I have to admit that the Garberg required the least amount of modification of the blade and zero modification of the sheath to make it an absolutely fantastic functioning knife that you can carry every day, and know that it’s going to serve you well! I can’t say the same for the Gerber Strongarm. As much as I love this knife, it took a lot of hours out of my life to get it to where it is now but I do not regret those hours. The finished product is quite satisfying. However… If I ever do break this thing, I have to buy another one and start all over. That would suck. And finally, the Puukko is a nice knife, but I just have not warmed up to it. Even though it is quite a good slicer and a tough utilitarian, it has not worked its way into my weekly rotation. But I am not getting rid of it, because I think I just need to force myself to use it a little bit more to get more attached to it. We shall see.
    Here is the video where I painstakingly modified the Gerber Strongarm:

    nice vid i have both garbergs carbon and stainles .I live in a rainy environment nice to have both .plus is buying something you dont have to mod or get another sheath, good to go right out of box.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. I used to have the stainless as well, for the same reason. I live in a marshy area with two big ponds and lots of woodlands. My first stainless would not hold an edge. So I bought a second hoping it would...I was wrong. So, I'm down to just the carbon. But, if you use it, the scandi part of the blade will stay clean and the rest being DLC coated, is rather well protected.

    I am definitely going to do the Strongarm mods! I have the Garberg, as well, and love it. Don’t have the Terrava. And the Pump King is sublime- pumpkin pie in a bottle.

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Terrava was a whim sort of purchase. I actually could live without it. Even though I think it is a great knife. My favorite for now is the Strongarm. Glad you are going to do the mods. Have fun. Don't have a PumKing prior to operating machinery. Could result in loss of a digit.

    I'm not a fan of the Garberg. I love the tevara puuko and the skrama. To me the 110 and the skrama is a very good package for camping and outdoor activities.
    Many people online believe crazy things. It's been my experience as a mechanic. One that's worked on everything from boats to heavy equipment. Anyway carbon steel only rusts when you don't use it. If you use your tools maintenance isn't a big deal. The biggest thing is wipe down your blades if they get wet. But even stainless will rust if it's left wet.
    Carbon steel is my favorite because it's so easy to maintain a razor edge. I'll take ease sharpening over stainless anyday.

      @knifetimestory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great comment. I totally agree. If you use your stuff, then it will stay in great shape. It is the stuff that sits in a drawer or on a shelf that collects rust. Plus, carbon just seems more durable to me.

    I have a modified Gerber Prodigy and I love it. They make excellent bushcraft knives with a bit of reprofiling .
    Hard to believe that the Prodigy was only $40 and the Strongarm was around $55 not long ago...
    LETS GO BRANDON.
    I had two Garberg stainless blades and both had issues with the grind geometry at the belly, to thick and short of an edge imho.
    The Carbon seems to look a bit different 🤔 too my eye bit I've never seen one in the wild yet.
    I refuse to buy a carbon version unless I can see if it has that weird hollow grind in the belly like it's stainless brother.

    • @knifetimestory

      Good point about the stainless Garberg. I've noticed a difference in the grind lines as well. The Carbon one I have now is great. Really a work horse and takes a beating. I'll never get another stainless Mora. But, I'll keep buying Carbon Moras.

      @knifetimestory I decided to buy the Carbon , it feels like a different knife . I could not get used to the stainless yet I told everyone back then it was the best knife ever ..blah blah blah.
      This Carbon version is different and I really like it.
      The next knife on my must own list is the Tops Dragonfly 4.5 . Ya gotta make sure to buy the right one that comes with their very good leather sheath . The old Dragonfly came with a nylon China piece of crap ...UGH .
      Anyways it looks to be the one knife I'm really looking for . It's thinner than my brakimo and has a better all around handle.
      Same scandi vex but like a kephart style shape , it really has my wallet in a headlock 😂

    It is a crying shame that the price of the Puukko doubled and they changed the sheath. Love the knife for what I do and the sheath was absolutely fantastic! About 2016 I paid about $35 and was amused when I read the updates on the delivery. Something got lost in translation but I knew the knife was coming. It got to the US three days after placing the order but stayed in custom for six weeks. Some of the best money I ever spent and A regretted not getting at least three more.

    • @knifetimestory
      @knifetimestory  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s pretty funny. It gets to the US that fast, and then just sits in customs.
      I’m not sure if that is the right sheath for that knife and that maybe somebody just did a little switcheroo on me. But either way, it’s in the garbage and now in a much better sheath.

      @@knifetimestory Ya know, I don't know what's with me and Gerber. I have some experience with the older Gerber folders (Gators, I guess?) and thought they were pretty good at the time. I had a Gerber multitool which I thought was pretty slickety too - right up until the blade started free-flopping. Oh! Wait! I've also had a couple of modern Gerber folders ("para frame"?) that I wouldn't trust to butter a crisp peice of toast. 🤔
      Gerber is just a real mixed bag in my experience.
