- Taking a short break from knife makers/craftsmen, I wanted to talk about knife grinds for this week and next week. Saber grind (or sabre grind) is a fantastic "all-around" grind for camp, survival, general purpose, etc. Let me know what you think of saber grind in the comments below!

100% agree that a mid to high saber grind - or even a modified saber-convex grind - is the most versatile grind for slicing, carving, prying, and batoning. It's my favorite grind.
I'm looking for good pair of leather hiking boots for next summer ,but I'll watch knives all day every day lol

I have a LTW Outback 3v in a saber grind.
Never ran into a time yet that made me say I wish I had different grind while in the forest performing various tasks.
Saber is a great all arounder. I typically have it, my GB Outdoor Axe, a Boreal 24, and my LM Surge with me in the winter when on trail for multiple days solo.
Not much I can't handle with that setup.
This visual talk about the grinds really helped me to understand the different types. I am just now getting into fixed bladed hunting and bush-crafting knives, and this has helped to steer me in the right direction, based on what I want the knife to do. Thanks!

Hey Buddy, I would like to see you do "field comparisons" of comparable knives within "classes".
* Ex: Esse 5 vs a Sospes
No need to trash anyone simply accentuate areas where one knife excells, cost comparison etc etc ...
That is an awesome suggestion. I would love to start working with comparisons. Most people do go back and forth between two knives in similar categories when making a purchase, so that information would be very valuable.

Great video 🙂 the hollow grind... empty like the name suggests 😂 Nah they are good for kitchen knives. Like the ones you throw in the dishwasher and then into a drawer. Great description of the different types. There are so many variations of them though. I think of saber grinds as the toughest as far as knife edges. Also like you said the jack of all trades. Maybe you could talk about different blade profiles? That’s also a big point in choosing a knife. What are you using it for? Hunting? Woodworking? Food? Fishing? A combination of them? Just like the grind there are different styles or shapes that make each chore easier. It really is a bottomless pit if you take the red pill🤣 it’s something worth talking about though. All I know is if you do come by a knife that you actually take a liking to... don’t sell it!! That stainless garberg I had. There was just something about it that felt smoother and easier to use than others. I traded it😐 Now I have a carbon version and it’s not the same. I’m not sure if I got another stainless it would be the same. There was just something about that knife.
Hahaha! Empty! Good one. And yes, talking about blade profiles is often overlooked. It's super important to consider it, though, when talking about grinds. I do think certain blade profiles work best with certain edge grinds. And how you use it decides which of those you should pursue. Thanks for the suggestion, Joe!

So as discussed Sabre isn’t a type of grind but actually just a non full height version of one of the other three grinds. With this in mind, why does LT. Wright not give more bevel information about their knives and instead just says they’re “Sabre”?
I don’t know. That’s a good question though, and I’m going to have to contact them and ask it. Does the flat portion determine any of the usability or functionality of the cutting edge?
One can have a sabre convex, a sabre Hollow grind, or a sabre flat grind. The world "sabre", only denotes the knife is not a full height grind.
Enjoy your videos. For my purposes I do not need a Scandi grind. Moreover, I hate sharpening them, since I have to remove so much metal on the wide bevel. I am probably going to make it into a Saber Grind. Do you foresee any inherent problems with this?

That is a great suggestion! I definitely have some thoughts on axes and saws. I'll put that on the schedule.
You still had a lot to learn 3 years ago young Padawan. Hollow grinds are not weak... Some of the best bowie choppers are rocking a hollow grind. Some of the best Italian stilettos also have hollow grinds. It depends on the stock thickness and arc length of the grind. Arc is one of the strongest structures out here and you have two arcs in every hollow ground blade. You prolly schooled in US so Geometry was not a thing in your High School.
I know you are more into the custom high end knives, but perhaps touch on the more budget friendy stuff like buck? especially if you go into the next phase of showing technique!
It's true. I've been kinda unbalanced in my videos lately. I haven't worked with budget blades in a long time, but I definitely should look into that market again. I'm sure with new tech, they're just getting better and better. Thanks for the suggestion, my friend!
I have the Battle Horse Chris Caine Survival and the Grange Park Kaiju in saber and yes, grind wise it's exactly that. Quite good for all tasks. Next one will quite possibly be a Muela Husky in RWL34. However, I'm not that strict or critical about flats (Esee 6, LW Boa), convex (Zoe Crist Saluda), hollows (Nieto Mustang) or scandis (Casstrom No10). Different for different tasks. More specialized towards one purpose. That's how I come to think about them.
Yes! I totally agree. It shouldn't be a favorite grind for all tasks. It should be a favorite grind for that specific task. I love scandi for carving and woodworking. I love flats for cooking and cutting up boxes. Right?
@@SurvivoTek Yes, humans are not perfect, so their tools are not either...lol! I like scandis for being strong, carving machines. Easy sharpening too, but they have sensitive edges. I like hollows for being pure slicers. But by definition, they're weaker cause so much steel is missing. Sabers for being both strong and slicy, but not as much. Flats for being all three, but also not as much. These are a bit like "survival knives". Not great at anything, but if made well, adequately good for everything. Convex for the more steel and therefore less worries. Phenomenal at splitting, tricky in feather sticking and (but only at first) sharpening, messy with food prep.
OK, so here's a starter question.
What is your view on Victorinox choosing 14C 28N steel for their new Venture series of knives and their choice of the full flat grind? This seems to fly in the face of "conventional" wisdom for a Bushcraft (not survival) knife.

I would recommend the Shemanese to someone wanting a long knife that's still agile and light enough to carry around comfortably. I am hoping to get out and film an actual review on it, but times have been a bit too hectic to get out and thoroughly test it. And I won't make a review until I can do that.

How do I savor grind a knife?
tell U a Tale-Grew up N my G/pa's sharpening shed long B4 so many grind's happened ! He even did scapels for couple local Surgeons.B4 I 4git sharpened his & my gillete blue blades so never bought refill's LOL. So all that time spent & 51% NA time sadly knives 2 me & mine R sharp or not maybe 2 simple 4 todays world? My go 2 blades R 4 woods etc a Sogfari & smiths machete/axe sharpener for it & my ole eastwing hatchet. Prefer 4 blade congress EDC's,filet on fish or deer or ?? use a ole G96b cuda filet blade that has lasted me for 50+yrs. Occasionally use a GI mora issue given 2me as a GI when dino's roamed. ty Hope this gives a LoL 2 some Ole Folks like me ;)
