    I had a couple of 205 GTI 1.9s back in the day, one after the next. Bat out of hell. Followed by a 5GT Turbo, so a total late 80s/ early 90s dream fest for a young lad. Decades later I need a 911 to give me similar thrills down a bend road.

    • @Number27
      @Number27  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did the 5 Turbo compare to the 205?

    • @riccapucho
      @riccapucho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Missed this. The 5GT Turbo felt more planted and faster because of that puffer. The 205 GTI 1.9was light as a feather in every way, and soddin’ fast cross country. Basically, take yer pick. Happy days. Ooh, and the 1.9 was a bit over throttled, so a mere touch on the accelerator caused the Pug to storm forward like a stabbed rat.

    For your whistle - Strange as it might sound... I'm going to suggest that it could be the exhaust.
    I only suggest that because on one of my modern classics (not a Ferrari unfortunately) as the stainless exhaust has got old, it hasn't started rattling or getting louder, but under hard acceleration it does whistle! I haven't investigated yet, but i'm assuming it's just baffles blowing through differently (worn or clogging). Good luck tracking it down.

    Check the fins on the alternator, ive had one in the past that whistles due to a fin or 2 being slightly out of line, once you spin it to a certain speed they catch the air, other then that a bearing maybe in the water pump.

      @@Number27 As someone who does not work on cars but computers, I'd also say that sounds very much like electronics coil whine. Hence an alternator sounds like a plausible explanation. The electromagnetic sound induction is often amplified by resonances, so it is typical that it becomes audible only under some specific conditions.

    to me it still sounds like a vacuum leak, and although you've balanced the carbs at idle. You could possibly still draw air through lower gaskets or butterfly seals bearings. Try some really soapy water on the bottom of the carbs and get a friend to look for signs of an air leak

    difficult to hear but from your description, I wonder if baffles in the exhaust are broken and could be restricting flow. It could explain why the engine doesn't rev out, the hissing noise and the metallic rattle you describe. At part throttle there's not enough gas flow to cause the problem and the broken baffles would only resonate at certain frequencies/rev range and at high flow rates.

    There are loads of exhausts on e- bay but one that stood out. It’s a high performance for a Ferrari 308 GT £1,230 plus £30 postage.... you could always try an offer !
    I used to have a sports exhaust on my 355 and have a sports exhaust on my 996 turbo and it makes all the difference
    www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183074898986 Also I just changed the coolant in the 996 and instead of using conventional coolant that is mixed with 50% water I used Evans waterless powercool 180 for my car. Water can corrode the engine and cooling system, water has a lower boiling point before boiling than the powercool 180 so is less effective in cooling the engine and as a result there is less pressure in the cooling system resulting in less strain on the rads and pipes.

  • @Steve_MFr

    Mmmmm, as someone who has been playing with cars all his life - including professionally for a number of years - I have a suggestion: relax. When the car boils over or a coolant hose pops or the alternator bearing seizes and the car throws a belt, don't flip out. If you don't learn to take things in stride, you're going to have to become an adrenaline junkie to enjoy the 308 (alternatively you could just become a regular junkie and hook yourself on valium...) :-p
    Remain calm. At least until you hear a loud bang at 6000rpm followed by clanging and large volumes of gray smoke and bits of piston and rod billowing behind the car. Then flip. That would be justified.
    BTW, the Influenzo was not trying to burn your face-off. It was a joke. It wanted to see you bang your head on the underside of the bonnet. It boiled over because the horns aren't in the engine compartment on the 308, so it likely would have not scared you if it had only beeped the horn.

    • @eskamobob8662
      @eskamobob8662 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @Dundertaker1
      @Dundertaker1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      p_r_i_m_e does the 308 have a full throttle position sensor and system? Then I’d trouble shoot that. Vac advance would be possible as stated...etc... my suggestion always is you have to get the car in spec and all maintenance caught up to really sort out a car. I.e. of it needs a top end refresh..you’d probably fix most issues when you change out hoses, vac lines, clean or replace fuel lines, adjust timing, etc...otherwise you’re chasing your tail. Coolant flush via overheating is one way of doing regular maintenance...;)

      Not to sure about your thoughts on air leak on full chat. You’ll get lower manifold pressure on closed throttle high rpm over run conditions.

    I was thinking bearings as well maybe a tensioner or alternator?

    Hi, I have a 1976 308 GTB and have had a similar noises at certain revs. Drove me mad but on mine it was a hairline crack in the exhaust heat shield on the rear bank of cylinders. Then I got another crack in the heat shield under the boot floor (deeper noise) and finally a high pitched tingling/whistling noise (like yours) that was the front heat shield protecting the alternator. Spent ages sorting crack/splits etc in heat shields and finally they've given up and gone away. We isolated each one by taking each heatshield off and seeing if it stopped the noise. Reving it in a workshop just didn't replicate it. Stick with it as 308s are the most underated Ferraris and when you've got it sorted you'll love it. I've had mine for 21 years now and have experienced just about everything that a car can throw at its owner. They are very fickle but very, very strong.

      Dirty contact on starter, common issue. The most unreliable part on the 205gti is the German part. Bosch fuel injection system, air flow meter. Many of us owners gave binned that and gone for wasted spark set up.

      If your having cold start issues, it will be the SAD on the back of the distributor SAD = supplementry air device, usually the rubber tube perishes and fucks it up, I used to set the throttle up by hand after working on them for years as a kid. 650rpm with air screw closed then open up to get 950rpm. It will run like a dream and no stalling out.

  • @My911
    @My911 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The name for the 205 has to be Pugsy. And the whistle may be coming from a resonance in your (fully open) throttle bodies. Happens with my BMW X5 3.0i and it drove me mad until I understood the reason. But I may be wrong and there is an issue with a vacuum line or rubber boot on the intake body? Don’t really know the car tho. Good luck, you will get to the bottom of it.

    As for the noise, I don't think it's a bearing, because it's pretty unlikely for a bearing noise to be load-dependant. It almost certainly has to be induction-related. Have you tried taking various hoses and bellows off one by one, and then trying it (I'm guessing not, as we're not allowed out! But when we are, that's what I'd be doing).

    Brilliant video and one lucky escape. The joys of motoring ‘as my father use to tell me’. The sound could be belts to tight, the alternator can also make a whistling noise, both when new and when there getting tired. It could also be a vacuum hose leak, maybe a split hose, for the most part that wouldn’t make a noticeable difference to performance. Good luck and look forward to the next video

    Glad it's running well....I had a similar noise on my 1981 Trans Am with a Chevy 350 many years ago. I think it was something to do with a vacuum line on it that wasn't blocked off properly. Used to only do it in the same fashion yours does.

  • @jonlsl
    @jonlsl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could be vacuum leak. But since it's on full throttle... It would be vacuum created by ported vacuum. So if the car has ported vacuum. Check any thing on the car connected by ported vacuum. Not manifold vacuum.
    Could be a very slight exhaust leak from a leaking exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust manifold or a small hole in the muffler or welds.

    it's the CARBS doing the whistling noise.... nothing to worry about! When you floor it the flaps open and they suck in more air...... single exhaust ??? remove that!.... as for the boiling water bit....Did you pull out the thermostat and rad fan switch when flushing the whole thing?
