      Yeah, it's a huge thing isn't it- I recently comp tested my Lotus 2.0 liter and was so happy to read a decent 160 across the board. Bad reading means messed up valve seats or piston rings, really bad news. Not having to go into the engine is so nice. Leakdown will show more info on the valve sealing and piston sealing over time, it's something to consider.

    Pleasing to see the compression was okay on all cylinders. No apparent misfire on tick over or under load, hmm number 3 plug looks like it’s over fuelling. Carburettor? Or the base gasket? Any signs of fuel leaking or staining around the base ? Just a thought, have you tried taking the plug cap off number 3 lead to see if there’s any corrosion ? Did you speak to Iian Tyrell ?
    I have to say I’m really enjoying this series and good luck with getting the car sorted. It’s going to be something fixable I’m sure.

    Tip: I have a one quarter inch thick sheet of plywood that is 48 inches long by 18 inches wide that I lay on the seal over the zippered boot cover and it serves as a work table when I'm messing with the engine. It will save your back because you can actually lean on it with your elbows. I covered it with some indoor/outdoor carpet and you can screw some lengths of half inch dowel to the bottom that will protrude inside the lip of the seal and keep it from sliding around. It will make engine work much more pleasant.

    All 308 from cold have tight 2nd gear, my 20k mile one did the same, most others Ferrari’s from that time were the same. Always go 1st to 3rd till box warm then it should be perfect. I don’t think your out off the woods yet on no3 cylinder. Do a leak down test on 3. Pull dipstick and listen for air to see if it’s getting past rings, you could have cracked compression ring. If it’s carb the other cylinder running of that carb would be rich as well I would have thought. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you, hopefully all ok

    Oil pan fix: depending on how it’s attached...when you put a new gasket on the pan, you need a “run out kit” which is like a tap set, but less aggressive, to clean up threads inner and outer (the kits have male and female for nuts and bolts). You also need to use brake clean and air on each thread or hole....and clean the run outs after each use or you’ll transfer rust and gum up threads. If it takes nuts over studs...new nuts...cleaned up studs....this will allow you to torque them correctly and evenly...do not over tighten....and should stop the leaks. I restore Porsche 928’s which have an oil pan that requires removing the frame cross brace...so it’s imperative to be meticulous, but done right...and as ze Germans intended...it is leak free and should be for years to come.

      Strangely, I have been a mechanic for nearly 49 years working on diesels and petrols of every kind and yet, I have never bothered with compression testing and don't even own a tester, always relying on my judgment when diagnosing faults as there are always other symptoms when compression is lost. Still very happy that this one is good as there are a lot of scare stories out there, would have been interesting to watch a rebuild though.

    Overhaul the carbs. You can get a rebuild kit from superformance for pennies really.
    The old fuel goes syruppy and clogs the jets. When you have got the carb off remove the jets soak them in solvent then blow air through them to check they are clear.
    I've had to resolve to pushing wire from a wire brush up the jet to get the gunk out. Then clean all the reservoirs out and make sure you have good new fuel in the tank.

    Rebuilding the Weber IDF's isn't too hard. It seems like you need to make sure your idle jets are set right and clean, insuring the main choke and aux is in good shape. They don't usually need too much of any bench work and can be gone through in a day of work. I cleaned my DCOE's out recently and it really helped, plus it's easy for you with a stock setup. Make sure the floats are set right and the valve that sets the float height is in good shape. Have you balanced the carbs yet?

    • @Number27
      @Number27  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will balance them once I get that cylinder working properly!

    • @discogodfather22
      @discogodfather22 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Number27 I mean internally balance. There are two types of balancing- between carbs and inside the carb. The air bypass screw controls this. One of my DCOE's had an awful imbalance causing very rich running on one cylinder. It's checked the same way, using a balance gauge. If it's not that it can be verified quickly.

    While knowing the compression is good, the carbon-coated plug indicates straight away that that cylinder is getting way too much fuel. And my experience with older cars, especially those that haven't been used much for a while, is that carb-rebuilding is often one of the first things that needs doing, and Webers are finicky and maintenance-intensive anyway so I would have ordered the rebuild-kits probably right after buying the car. But hey, all that other drama makes for good TV, right?

    Btw, I was feeling guilty going shopping for my at risk mother, chose not to take my Ferrari for a TH-cam video run on the way. Go figure...

    @Number 27 If you still have the car, Nick's Forza Ferrari in Washington state, makes an improved water pump for the 2.9L. When you do a belt service, it might be worth the money to buy one of these. It comes with a 10 year/90K mile warranty.

    Taking on an old Ferrari is a bit like adopting an ageing Dog..! Its going to have problems and not last very long, be smelly and have bad habit's and there must be a reason why the last owner could not keep it anymore!!
    My sensible side always talks me out of these old exotics..as I want to be driving and not mechanic-ing, If you want to go crazy fast you can get a great superbike for few K .
    But I do respect you for doing what a lot of guys dream of doing and talk them self out of, That is why topics like this are so popular.....we all fantasize about giving this a shot??
    Best of luck, Thumbs up

    £30k is the right price at present for one of these. They all have small things wrong but for that money you should get a low mileage car with no rust and recent engine major service. All these Ads for £50-100k cars are just rubbish.

    Nice vid. The front floor shape is quite worrying but we all know Ferrari was using crap steel back in the days (bought from Mafia companies), same at Alfa or Lancia.

    Just found your channel and I'm working through the back catalogue. You have a great car there - the sweet spot between being affordable but very, very, tidy. On a slight;y less positive note, I only briefly saw the underside of the car and what I thought I saw was a great swathe of old-style underseal. That can hide all sorts of horrors so I would give it a very critical review to check for anything loose and possible rust underneath.

    Nice looking machine looks bloody good you can sort it out mate no worries
    the front end reminds me of the Fiat Dino
    And interestingly I had a Fiat X1/9 And the steering wheel could be pulled down the same way and in the doorjamb the front and rear boot release had a plastic shroud and that cracked the in same way.......
    lots of Fiat X19 parts are on high-end cars like the head like pods, radiator, various handles and releases, Radiator and oil cap some mounts and dash switches etc......
    Looks good you can fix it mate
    When you get into it try not to put your hand on the corner of the windscreen as you sit down because over time if you happen to lean on it to assist lowering your weight into the seat it can crack along the base of the windscreen there....
    Same thing leaning on the open door to help getting your weight into the car that causes problems as well mate

    Why would it only be in one cylinder if it'sa carb issue? Also the spark plug for #3 is way too dark, so either that plug is still not firing correctly under load or ??. I'm almost wondering if he has a bad oil ring on that cylinder, or a crack in the head gasket. Best bet is to do a proper leakdown test next. Don't be driving it until you figure it out, you could be washing out that cylinder!

    • @Number27

      The carbs on this car have separate circuits for each cylinder.. though it is hard to see how only one circuit could be running rich..

    Great News, compression ok. Did you check for spark on plug 3? If it's good, then I do a carb rebuild which is what I think you were getting to. Can't be anything else now. Easy compared to engine rebuilds, rebuilding carbs, it's an art though. For absolute piece of mind I'd outsource the first one and get a spare to practice on if financially viable for future reference.
    1, Send carb to Eurocarb for repair @ www.dellorto.co.uk/ Good prices &/or recommendations
    2, Have a go yourself www.superformance.co.uk/308/fuel.html Carb kit £44.95, can't argue with that price ! :)
