    Traumatic bonding occurs as the result of ongoing cycles of abuse in which the intermittent reinforcement of reward and punishment creates powerful emotional bonds that are resistant to change. Pretty much defines owning an Italian car. Once again great video and good luck with the gaskets

      Just had a thought, the gunk might be coming from your water pump bearings. If they used loads of coolent when they machined out that Union it might have found its way through and into the cavity between the bearings. That stuff tracks through and rots cables on CNCs at work. It looks a bit soapy in your video too.

    Pressure test the water system when cold. If it holds for 30minutes head gaskets should be fine. If radiator has built in oil cooler I would send it away for cleaning and pressure testing if possible.
    When you overheated it that's when the oil would have been emulsified. All and every oil drop made its way to the expansion tank. Shame you didnt check the header when you first got it.

    Just a thought - years ago, I had a similar problem with the wife's Opel Rekord Station Wagon: it turned out to be the water pump housing on the front of the engine that (for some obscure reason) had oil and water channels in close proximity. Corrosion caused a hole to develop and presumably because of the higher oil pressure, the oil got into the water (rather than the other way round). Replacing the housing solved the problem. It may be worthwhile looking for any weird 'attachments' to your engine's block or heads that might have similar channels.... a long shot, but still...

    Whenever I've had oil in the water, it's been oil leaking into the coolant section of the oil cooler. Happened several times.
    The oil system works at a higher pressure than the cooling system, which explains the direction of travel.
    I am not convinced you have head gasket issues.
    You'd also get rough running on idle, and/or a bit more steam.
    Good luck.

    • @Z4NL

    • @andrewausterfield6710
      @andrewausterfield6710 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Z4NL Not always exactly this - you get steam when the water comes into the combustion chamber. It's possible for a head gasket to fail between an oil and water pathway and this is why the car will continue to run fine.

    1. Do not put any "sealants" in the cooling system. It will not help if it is a head gasket and it will make a HUGE mess in the cooling system that is difficult to clean out. That water pump would be coming off again for a deep clean.
    2. The posts about checking for bubbles while the engine is hot and running is sound advice. A blown head gasket will result in combustion gasses in the cooling system.
    3. If you flush the cooling system, use a detergent to get most of the oil residue out. I have an early 996 Porsche 911 that is prone to cracked heads. There are several threads on the internet about flushing the complex cooling system. The oil will eventually degrade the rubber hoses. They will get soft, swell, and eventually fail.
    4. If it is a head gasket or oil cooler leak, the reasons you are not seeing water in the oil is because oil pressure is higher than coolant system pressure while the engine is running. Water will get in the oil after the engine is shut down and oil pressure drops to zero while coolant pressure remains around 15 psig. If the leak is very small or is very recent and the coolant system has not undergone many heat cycles, the amount of water that has migrated into the oil is small enough that it evaporates when the engine gets hot. It will eventually show up under the oil fill cap. The sooner you diagnose and repair, the better.
    Hope this helps. Eric

      Good tip! I was about to say that or even just feel if the hoses on the cooling system goes hard when hot. If so, head gasket. Often oil in the water is just a sloppy job when heads where removed the last time and had oil in water. DO NOT PANIC! Think!

  • @discogodfather22
    @discogodfather22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice thing about the 308 is that the engine can come out from up top, so you could do it in your garage. You need what we call a cherry picker (engine crane). It's a fairly straightforward job, the car should be around 18" up on jack stands. Replacing the head studs is always a good idea. You can also flush the coolant more often and just enjoy the car for awhile. As long as there is no water in the oil, it's not as bad.

    Another thumbs up to the oil cooler leaking oil into the water system. As others have said, this is a fairly common fault on VAG cars....fingers crossed it's a similar issue on the InfluEnzo. The fact that there's no water in the oil points to this being a potential cause.

      I know a few folk with desirable european sports cars that are in really shocking mechanical condition - worn suspension and drivetrain, gearshift like a handful of spaghetti but they look impressive...
      I'd love a 246GTS and have wanted one for over 40 years , but then I do my own mechanical work and realise what it takes to keep europian vehicles on the road.

      Vinny Bologna I’ve owned a Mondial, an F355 and currently a 360. I’ve only driven them in the country I live in (UK) but then I’ve never driven any car I’ve personally owned outside the U.K.
      I called the breakdown service for the Mondial once in 5 years but fixed it before they arrived and cancelled it.
      They weren’t problem free but what old car is (in fact new cars can be problematic)? The Mondial was 21 when I bought it and 27 when I sold it.
      Of course they’re not cheap to run, but are if cared for, reliable.

    Gaaahhhh - you are hooked, I can tell. I had the same advice as you say at the end - complete coolant flush and refill, followed by some road use. The obvious place where oil and water meet is at the point where the video started - the water pump assembly. Get an exhaust gas and hydrocarbons sensor check done on the coolant after a road run to eliminate the head gaskets as the source. Also, have a look for very fine bubbles appearing in the coolant whilst the engine is running.

    From the little I know it doesn’t sound like a head gasket problem. Having oil only in the coolant and not the other way around can only be happening where the oil and coolant channels are adjacent to one another: when running the oil pressure is greater than the coolant pressure and so gets forced in. If it was a head gasket, the coolant would be drawn in on the induction cycle when the pressure is low. For example, I had this same issue on a particular Renault engine and the cause was a perished seal in the thermostat housing, which also channels the oil. Changing the seal fixed it.

    Sorry to hear about the setback. Mine had HGF at about 70k miles when my dad owned it. It happened during a long run back from France during which the car continued to run pretty much fine. In the end it went to a specialist to be done - engine removal and as you have intimated, the heads were well stuck on. If I was doing it now I'd find some space, get the engine out and on the bench and do a light rebuild yourself - refresh the heads, hone the bores, new rings, crank shells and seals. It'll still come out miles cheaper than paying a specialist and would be a great project. I'll even buy a T-shirt to help fund it!

    Flush cooling system completely...refill, bleed and drive. Keep an eye on the temp gauge, if it is stable and keeping good temp and you still find oil in the header tank, check the oil cooler first. I would think if it was the head gasket, there would be bubbles in the header tank, coolant in the oil and the engine would run hot. Fingers crossed...I now the feeling all too well. Just remember, you don't own a Ferrari, you have a relationship with a Ferrari. Good luck, I love your channel.

    Check the oil cooler. My 944 ( yes I know its a Porsche and yours is a Ferrari ) had what you see and it was simply a gasket on the engine oil cooler allowing a tiny bit of oil into the water that cools the oil. Nothing very hard to fix in your tiny garage.

    I almost cried watching this. I've been here since the beginning of this story and I keep looking forward to the time you can just enjoy the car. I really really really hope it's not the head gasket for you. Fingers crossed. I would buy a t shirt if it comes to it to help out or I would also chuck into a fundraiser if it is the head gasket. I'm sure others would too. Let's hope the problem is not as bad as it initially looked

    It’s like watching a man hit his head against a wall and waiting for him to stop. Painful to watch, but ever more painful for the doer!
    When the Goodwood Breakfast Club returns to normality I strongly suggest you rock up with a large upturned Top Hat to put in front of the car and maybe a little 1980’s cassette (very apt for a period piece) playing Simon Bates “Our Tune”. I guarantee you will see grown men cry and get some well earned head gasket money. As for me I’m still sticking with the AMG.

    I would flush it, clean the system, and then try something like steal seal or liqui moly cooling system sealer. I‘ be used it on a lot of old cars, it always worked. The problem with this kind of damage is, you never know, where it comes from. Maybe a head gasket, maybe a cracked head, maybe something else.

    Seriously though, when you flush the system put some Steel Seal or some other head gasket sealer in it. I used Holts rad seal gold in my Alfa 159 and has worked a treat. I don't think you can make it any worse than it already is.

    Been working on engines like this for a long time and they are not as impossible as you think, it just takes patience, the right information and a little creativity. The overheat is almost certainly a blown head gasket but test well first ,it might be the oil cooler in the rad. I've just finished a top end rebuild with head gaskets etc on an jag V8 following a blown head gasket. treat it as an opportubity to upgrade and improve, dont be afraid to take your time and enjoy the process. remember when the heads are off they can have flow improved, valves re ground all good stuff.

    When fixing lots of issues with old mid-engine cars, if you have 3 or more things to do then bite the bullet and drop/pull the engine. Much easier to work on and you'll no doubt see many things that need attention - things you didn't see when the engine was in place.

  • @frankthetank400

    Well, even if ''hope dies last'' but when you get oil in your cooling water circulation, straight after you overheat your engine...i think we all know that you have to remove your heads. And putting into calculation, that the car is far over 30 years old, and maybe the heads have never been removed...its just simple logic, what the next step should be. I just hope you are lucky, and there are no cracks in the heads. I would safe the flushing of the cooling water piping for afterwards, when the head gaskets had been replaced. Big thanks for all your videos, they are a great entertainment, i love watching them. Because after all, it is such an iconic classic Ferrari, where every penny and every hour spent, is absolutely worth it!

    I'm not a Ferrari expert but had you looked in the expansion chamber prior to this? That crap could have been in there a while - flush it all out. Is it possible to remove the expansion tank and clean it off the car? Do that to start with - flush through thoroughly with clean fresh water and then fill with the correct coolant and see what happens. Good luck and keep your chin up.

    First job, clean the coolant system. Dish washer tablets are favourite. Then have another go and make sure you do have a current leak. If you do drop the engine and take the unit home to work on it. You will do so much more if you've only got to pop out to the garage.

  • @jasonb8659
    @jasonb8659 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    First things first. Remove expansion tank & thoroughly clean. Flush the cooling system and just refill with water at this stage. Then conduct a "sniff test" to see if there are any exhaust gases entering the cooling system. As someone else has mentioned, someone could have accidentally put oil in the expansion tank before and it's old residue. Be sure to thoroughly check all this before pulling the engine. If oil is entering the cooling system you'd also expect water to be entering the oil

    • @Number27
      @Number27  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Before panicking, how about flushing the cooling system, and refill with fresh, clean fluid ?
    Drive for a while, and see if the sludge returns ?
    You may get lucky.
    If the problem persists, I'd say get the head bolts torqued up before doing anything else.

    If the cooling system flush doesn't work and you still have oil in the water, before you take the heads off try 'K seal'. I fixed a P38 Range Rover 4.6 with it years ago that had suspected head gasket blown. It's still running fine today.

    Costa del Sol here.
    We had a 308 in the Shop a while ago, sat idle for years & vandalised by kiddos (caught on camera), so while l rewired the dash & console bossman did the complete engine service.
    Cyl. 1 had zero compression.
    10k€ for the rebuild, client said "No."
    The car was worth about 25k€ market value down here (running); so l think your's is a bit expensive.
    l told the boss to offer him 10k€ for the car but he laughed. We work on a lot of 'old' Ferraris so we get to drive them, but owning is not a good idea!

    I feel for you. I experienced this in the early 90's with a BMW 323i 6 cylinder with a mechanic injection. be 100% sure of the problem rent a garage for one or two weeks so you can work on it with a second person. Take at least 4 days extra than you think you need because you will definitely find more what you have to fix or what to repair because you broke it yourself. Good Luck

    I've got the same problem with my 3.0 alfa 166, I've got oil in the coolant but not a sign of oil contamination. The expansion tank has black sludge in it, but the car drives great like yours.
