The three reasons this electric Ferrari 308 is better than the original

  • I never thought i'd see the day that a classic Ferrari was converted to electric power. And even less did I think I would like it. This Ferrari 308 (featured in vintage voltage) is powered by a Tesla motor and batteries and has the equivalent of 500hp. Enzo will be turning in his grave.

They do a after market kit for this conversion that transforms the sound of the car, it is not cheap however. I may be a little scant with a detailed description but it basically consists of two large bamboo lolypop sticks which are affixed to the rear driven wheels aka like we did with our bikes as kids . The effect is quite exhilarating giving it a wonderful bark .

surely electric conversion very much depends on the state of the car / engine. Like you said if you're looking at an engine rebuild for £20K then electric conversion, assuming you have a car with good body/ chassis, makes a lot more sense, personally I'd rather see a classic car saved through having undergone an electric conversion than lose that old classic car

@@thejupiter2 . As more and more cities bring in legislation to ban petrol and diesel cars from city centres, these exotics will become expensive paperweights. Their wealthy owners will trailer them to Goodwood, etc, and thrash them around the track, then trailer them home, and put them in the garage till the next time...or, more companies will develop plug and play EV conversion kits. The drive train can be removed and kept on the shelf, the EV drive train can be installed, and the car can continue to be used and enjoyed. Without the fear of a flatbed journey home, and a large repair bill. Owning an old classic is often an expensive experience.
It will be like horses. You can ride your horse, but not through the centre of London. It's also an expensive hobby.
I like cars. I love to hear a classic Bugatti doing the Goodwood hillclimb, but it's not sustainable or practical for most people. Remember, most car journeys are the boring, mundane, banal daily driving we all do, stuck in traffic and commuting to and from work. Also 90% of the time cars are parked, probably more for exotic classics that only get driven on fine, sunny days.
Even if electric cars turn out to be not the final answer for personal transport, ICE cars will disappear, and sooner than you think. Just because you don't want it to happen, doesn't mean it won't

    • @K1lostream
      @K1lostream 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think it depends - there are some classic cars where the engine is not the centrepiece; Citroen DS springs to mind, or pretty much any Rolls, and yeah I think they may lend themselves to electric conversion.
In other cases, the engine is the defining thing about the car - to lose it is to lose the essence of what the car was, and what you're left with is a full-scale model.
I wouldn't presume to tell anyone else what's the right or wrong thing to do with their own car - as long as the owner enjoys what they've got then thats the main thing, but had it been my money, that Ferrari would still have it's beating heart.

@@04dram04 I disagree on this. I own a 1980 lotus esprit S2.2. The character of a lotus esprit is defined by its driving characteristics, the way it handles and steers and not so much by its engine. In a conversion I would be worried about the gain of weight tho. Mine is just above 1000kg, Paul Kane's will be heavier but with a turbo also more powerfull.
If that conversion keeps the weight distribution between front and rear as perfect and the centrepoint of gravity as low, an electrified esprit would be fun to drive. One note. The esprits gearboxes (although only reverse and 1st gear would be used) do not stand a lot of torque, so I don't know it would cope with the massive torque of a tesla motor? And to finish. I know that as an easter egg , Tesla has incorporated the view of the james bond submarine esprit on the screen of model S and model X that have the air suspension package. SO it would be cool to drive an early esprit with a Tesla motor.

In the video, the combination of motor whine and tire noise make this thing sound like a jet-powered car. I don't obviously know if that's the case in person, but it was surprisingly cool.
The change to 50/50 weight distribution means that, in effect, this is no longer a mid-engine car. It's now much more like a Corvette or BMW, or any other 50/50 car, with the balanced and benign handling associated with that design. So it loses its mid-engine handling characteristics, one of which is putting the power down better on acceleration, and one of which is off-throttle oversteer. Not a bad exchange for normal driving, actually. But on-the-limit, it will be a very different car.
This really is a complete transformation into something different that looks like a Ferrari.

Having lost the use of my right arm in a traffic accident on another Italian icon, a Ducati motorcycle, I have had to limit myself to automatic cars. Some cars are only available in manual such as the Z3 M Coupe (3.2L) so I had to make do with the Z3 Coupe 3.0L automatic to sate my urge to own and drive one. The Ferrari 308 / 328 is another car I would love to own and drive but cannot as they are manual boxes. I have thought of maybe having an automatic gearbox fitted somehow, but this option to convert to electric provides two solutions. One, my need for an automatic is solved and two, the car is future-proofed from the coming legislation and cost to fuel gasoline engines in the future. Thanks again for this video and thinking outside of the box.

Maybe for most performances and most bands, the crisp, clean, clear sound of compact disc is preferable. You’re right not to do it on the Influenzo Jack. As James May would say I like it ‘standard’. By rights a 2020 Porsche 911 GTS outperforms my :69 2.0E. But would I love it more? Does it involve me more in the drive? When I drive it, will I still feel the connection back to Stommelen? Mitter? This type of electric transformation I can definitely live with. Bring it on.
As a petrol head, what I can't stand is the huge amount of nice premium cars with small four-cylinder diesel engines (C class, E class, 3 series, 5 series, A4, A6, XF, etc, etc, etc.), and their owners feeling like they're driving "the ultimate driving machine". This is especially rife in Europe.

    • @gvybin
      @gvybin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If those owners do feel that way, they are happy owners. So why can't you stand people being happy ? But I do understand what you mean. A lot are business lease cars and the owners do not have a big choice from the company in engine/power.Usually very small capacity diesel engines. The brands however have given them a very good choice in interior and exterior options and gadgets, just to make people feel happy. I am a petrol head, like you, and do own an old lotus esprit. But I also have that typical premium 4 cylinder lease car from the job. For the first time , it is a hybrid and although a 4 cyl diesel ( mercedes C300de) it has a combined power of 306PK and a whopping mountain of 700Nm torque. And this is way different to my previous 4 cylinder diesels.(BMW 320d or Alfa Romeo 156 or .....)
Still, the old lotus esprit is more of a petrolhead car than the quick Merc

A thought provoking video for sure.
This must come down to personal preference surely?
Personally I love the shape of the 308/328 family and if my only option was electric then I would make the conversion.
However, personally a Ferrari for me has to make noise. The engine is as important as the looks and although I accept that this converted car drives and performs better than the original, that, for me, is slightly missing the point.
I applaud the owner for keeping his passion alive and his car fresh but if I owned one it would be petrol. 😉

    • @wpb1395

I understand the noise thing, I really do, but I think as we move into the future, noise will be seen more and more as an annoying achronism. That's a fascinating video, and I really appreciate the honesty. It would have been so easy just to pretend that it was massively inferior to the real car.
But it raises an interesting question. Is a Ferrari that's been so radically altered still a Ferrari at all? I don't really see how it can be. And if it isn't, then why not just build a replica Ferrari with an electric motor and non-Ferrari components?
I'd imagine that you could build it to look exactly the same, but with modern brakes, suspension, lights etc that would be a lot better than the original, but supplied at a fraction of the cost by mainstream manufacturers.
As well as forgetting about the cost of maintenance for the mechanical side you could then stop worrying about maintenance costs completely.
It becomes almost a philosophical question - what is a Ferrari?

@Graham Thank you for your reply and sharing your unrelated opinion; I must admit that I can sleep at night now I know your view.
Nowhere did I comment on resource consumption or suggest it was anything but a toy? It is a Ferrari, the very definition of a toy; mind you with the electric motor it is probably going to provide more trouble free miles even if it provides less usable range then ICE.
In fact all I said was that I can imagine an old Citroen or Mercedes both of which in my opinion are more about their handling and 'waftability' then their engines per se being quite enjoyable to convert to electric for trouble free modern reliability.
Perhaps read people's comments before replying with negativity and ill conceived responses that do not relate to comment itself.
FYI, you may be frustrated by the whole zero emissions furphy as indeed there is no such thing as a zero emission vehicle when you consider the whole life cycle.
There are emissions from the production, support side of usage and from recycling (because of Lithium battery recycling is actually significantly higher (more than 25% higher).
However, a recent study in Australia suggests that EVs here come out approximately 18% lower per km in whole of life emissions than an ICE Car (We have 21% renewable power). In NZ where they have approximately 84% renewable an EV emissions are more than 60% more efficient per km. ( Neither Australia or NZ have nuclear power so the definition of renewable has not been skewed by that which is also a furphy.)
