    With respect to you 9000 miles isn't a"long term high mileage" review. I tested the XLT 4x4 and the XLT FX4 before I purchased the FX4. The ride in the FX4 is a stiffer more rugged ride. My wife preferred it and at 55 years old she didn't think there was a need for a dampened tailgate she could pick it up and lower it with 2 fingers. It tows our camper great and pulled it up a 7 percent grade at 70 mph. Great truck

    First off, the reviewer was driving a 2019 Ranger, not a 2020, which is why it has 9K miles on it. New 2020 Rangers do not have the word "Ranger" stamped into the front seat leather. Second, the truck he was driving had the FX4 package. The FX4's are known to have a bouncy ride. Yes, everyone knows that it doesn't have a tailgate damper, gee whiz. Much has been made of this. Not sure that this 10-speed trans is the bee's knees, Ford replaced the one in my Ranger with only 5k miles on it. Time will tell. Still love the truck and Ford did make it right. Agree with the reviewer about the gas mileage. My Ranger has rarely gotten over 18MPG.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off, the commenter is wrong because the paperwork Ford gave me said 2020. Second, dear commenter, not everyone knows they don’t have a damped tailgate, but on the other hand I review more supercars than small trucks.

      I would bet that bouncy ride is due to the single graduated leaf spring in back, there are fortunately aftermarket leaf springs available for this truck.

    It’s an off road suspension so it’s a bit floaty. So is the off road Tacoma. I test drove one and noticed the same thing but it was comfortable and I thought it drove nicely. It’s on my short list.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a street suspension with single chamber dampers, no bypass of any kind, no external reservoirs. The ZR2 and Taco TRD Pro have off road suspensions. Keen to see the Ranger Raptor when we get it.

    • @jonathanmueller2849
      @jonathanmueller2849 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrianMakse The FX4 does have different shocks than the base Ranger, which is what I believe the other person was referring to.
      I'm not sure what the exact differences are, but Ford does claim they are tuned for off road use which might would likely explain some of the bounciness. I'd be interested to see how the default suspension compares to the FX4 suspension. It might alleviate some of the issues you had with the truck.
      Overall great review though, very thorough and well put together :)

    I have a 2021 XLT and yes it’s a very straightforward vehicle not a lot of fuss I like that. But one major dislike is the steering. It is very loose and all over the place if you’re not constantly adjusting the vehicle. Unlike other trucks it feel disconnected with the road surface like it could veer off the road at any moment if you don’t have strong control on the steering wheel. Also making very sharp turns has a feeling that it might flip. Second dislike is the tailgate it’s super light weight,removes very quick and easy with a screwdriver. Highly recommend a locking model if you don’t want it stolen.

The worst I ever got was 17.4 towing a 17 foot boat. The best was 25.9 on a long trip, and I average right around 21 in mixed driving. Also, what is the big deal about a non-dampened tailgate. A lot of full size trucks don't have them either. It's a $30 add on you can do yourself if you want it.

      Great question. Ridgeline and Gladiator are outliers because they're totally different things. The trouble for me is that I already know what I'd buy in the category, which is ZR2. Taco is probably the one to get for retained value, but the ergonomics are a disaster and I couldn't live with that in any trim level. Thus, for me, it comes down to Colorado/Canyon or Ranger and TBH it's six of one, half dozen of another. Realistically, it'll always come down to personal brand preference.

    I am currently driving a real "high mileage" vehicle: a P71 with 165K miles. In my book, a not quite 1 year old car with UNDER 10K isn't high mileage, but being a press vehicle I guess I can forgive the use of the term.
    My biggest concern with Ford's newest vehicles is the company's (over)reliance on EcoBoost engines. Between turbocharging and Direct Injection I am not optimistic that these engines will make it to 6 figure mileages without major repairs.
    BTW, driving my car at just under 50 mph I can feel it switching back and forth between 3rd and 4th as I ease up on the gas and/or barely add pressure to the gas pedal. 50 mph/2000 rpm must be THE spot with Ford at which you are switching between "city and country" driving.

      I actually don't think I've ever seen my 2019 Ranger shift into second gear while driving normally, I'd be surprised if this one was constantly in it. It's possible what he thought was 2nd gear was actually 3rd, and when shifting from 3rd to 4th the 10-speeds do tend to hold the gear longer and (in my experience) can make the shift from 3rd to 4th feel more drastic than most other gear shifts on that transmission.

    I dont see paying the money they asking for these and all the dealer fee add on BS of course. But besides that. Its a 10 year old design that Ford offers as something new in America when the same truck has been all over the rest of the world for a decade. A boosted 4 cylinder? I just prefer a N/A v6. Boosted stuff wears out faster. I prefer a motor that can do all this 4 cylinder does, but with out the need for forced induction to do it. A ranger raptor in rest of the world cost the same as a standard equipped XLT here in America. There is an investigation into the gas mileage. I like that the ranger is back, but I will not consider a new one till there is a V6 option and a redesigned body. Current looking ranger like I said is decade old.

    I have seen this same truck featured in other auto-media videos, and have seen the way they have abused it off-road and on at the hands of way more drivers than most vehicles will ever have to endure in a lifetime. It appears to be holding up well, but let's check back in about another 50k or so under that same kind of abuse.With that said, I like what I've seen so far of this new Ranger; enough that I recently purchased a 2020 XLT FX4. I had a Lariat model as a rental for a few days back in January and didn't like the all-digital instrument display of the Lariat trim. The XL and XLT both use a more user-friendly analog display that is easier to navigate while driving. I will say the 4wd control knob does not present a very positive feel. It's very vague and difficult to tell what drive setting you're in by looking at it. Fortunately it also comes up on the instrument display as to which mode you're in. Hopefully Ford's engineers will go back and correct this issue for future models. The 2.3 Ecoboost has plenty of power, and does deliver decent fuel economy for the size/weight of the truck, thanks to the 10-speed automatic. Honestly I've never been crazy about turbocharged engines ever since a very bad experience with a turbo-Chrysler from the 80's. When I saw the discounts on this truck during the midst of the Covid-19 shutdowns I decided to take advantage of it. We shall see how it holds up over 100k or more miles in the coming years.
