EXCELLENT REVIEW of RANGER in the MUD. TFL OFF ROAD puts it to the OFF ROAD CHALLENGE of the FORD RANGER.I was CURIOUS to see how THE FX4-OFF ROAD PACKAGE handle MUD and DEEP SNOW, IN THE event i find myself in a situation that calls for me to use it. I have the 2022 FX4 CREW CAB(ranger). The TRUTH is that it's NOT as CAPABLE as the ZR2, or TACOMA TRD-OFF ROAD (but, the REALITY is the FORD RANGER still CAN GO WHERE THEY CAN GO excluding the JEEP GLADIATOR BUT, THEN AGAIN THE GLADIATOR COST MORE.
Not a fan of turbos but this maybe the best tuned version of this engine. Doesn't strain and just goes. Feels like an old Toyota without the underpowered issues. Just change the oil.
I had a 02 F-150 FX4. After warranty 3 coil on plugs went bad, u joint had to be replaced, a rear axle seals went bad. All under 60K miles. Truck never off-road.
I wish Ford would see this comment.... when you make a new manual transmission four-wheel drive Ranger I will drive my old one to The Crusher and buy a brand new one off the showroom floor I give you my word well I'm waiting....... Ps great video brother 👍
I lucked out and got a 2020 Ranger Lariat as a rental for the next month. I’ve been SO impressed with the Hankook tire’s on-road handling. They stick like glue while I’m hustling on curvy mountain backroads but they’re also smooth, comfortable, and quiet. Now I’m even more impressed to see that they’re actually good in the mud as well. I’ve been impressed with the Ranger overall, really. The only thing I don’t like is the 10r80’s automatic shifting logic. I even reset the ECU so it could relearn my driving habits but that only made it actually use 2nd Gear for about 20 miles before it went back to skipping from 1st to 3rd and hitting 7th Gear by 40mph and 10th Gear before 50mph. I really don’t see the point in having 10 gears when it only uses 5 of them as a rule. You would think it would kickdown gears aggressively when you toe into it but instead it just stubbornly stays in too high of a gear and bogs like when you accidentally shift from 1st to 4th in a manual transmission. The 10r80 is SUPER annoying 100% of the time. Either way, I’m glad I got to experience this trans before the Bronco releases. I’ll definitely be getting mine with the 7-speed!
The ranger is a nice truck. I have the 2013 " budget" ranger. Single cab 2.2liters with only 120 hp. But it is definitively good in any situation. I have street tires with the mud + snow mark. I just have to swich on the 4L mode and if gets out off every muddy terrain. I love it
I have a 19 Ranger with the same BB licence plate, not that many numbers away, funny. Just love my truck. Put a Bully Dog on it and with good fuel and the 93 tune its a monster sleeper. 0-100km/hr in 5.5 seconds. It eats all the other mid-sized truck with the stock tune. Nice to see the mud performance, I haven't had opportunity to try it out.
Plastic can be pretty strong and flexible it would be pretty hard to puncture the tank. I've got a plastic p mag for my ar15 ran it over with a f250 on concrete to see if the hype was true. It only scratched it works great. Plastics are pretty good these days better than steel in alot of applications.
Worst tires ive ever purchased. Hankook Dynapro ATM Got about 30k miles out of them mixed gravel roads and highway use. Nothing crazy(I have other vehicles that are off road focused). 2nd summer in and I got 2, I repeat 2! flat tires in a month on a county gravel road leading to my house. Want to know what put holes in them? Pieces of gravel! I have lived off of a gravel or dirt county road for going on 13 years and have never had this happen with any other tire brand and i have had many many different tires on multiple vehicles. When i had the tires replaced I noticed they had very weak sidewalls and were very soft and squishy compared to other all terrain tires Ive had in the past.
@@231mac you know whats shitty? the 2nd gen 3.5l and 2.7l are only available in the f150. the cars/suvs dont get them besides lincoln products (and even then im not 100% sure which ones.)
TFLOffRoad make sure to correct the ground clearance measurement. The Bronco says 11.6" but that is below the rear diff only. Measure it at the front diff, then at the breakeven point between the wheels. I think it is over 16". Much higher then a Wrangler or a Defender.
I have the ford ranger wild track witch is the top of the range in Australia absolutely love it the 3.2 diesel is suck a reliable engine goes so well have about 120000km on it now with no problem just putting lift and Tyers on the thing changes the Ute off-road great Ute 👍👌🙌
Good little truck! You got the best reviews on YT dude. TFL is lucky to have you. Chatty, informative, you really to test these rigs well, and we can OBVIOUSLY see how much fun you are having. Keep the good work up!
Looks like Ranger handled it just fine! I think the FX4 Ranger would be up to the task of mid-grade off-road duties which would satisfy 95% of the owners. I have a 2019 and really enjoy it.
Got a 2020 myself and I totally agree. There’s a story online about some people who took 2 stock fx4s with rooftop tents on an overlandi g trip across the states and they did wonderfully
Outdoor Layne I don’t have any more panel gap or worse build quality than any other mid size on the market. I extensively test drove the entire segment, minus the ridgeline because it wasn’t really fitting to what I wanted it for. And the ranger was the most comfortable and felt the best to drive to me. I initially went in wanting a Tacoma but the engine was a dog and my head was firmly planted in the headliner.
Outdoor Layne with the amount of off roaring I’ve done in mine so far I’m going to have to disagree with you there, if I had a single qualm about it, the tires would be the biggest issue I had with it. As far as onroad it’s far more comfortable than the taco I drove. It may have been that the tire pressure was absurdly high in the one you drove, as I have seen instances of pdi not being done properly by the dealership and the tires having well over 40 psi in them still
That's not the limit lol it can do way more. m.th-cam.com/video/_A7BOFV2LZY/w-d-xo.html Plus if you add a 6inch lift and some 35s it can look pretty badass and it won't strain with the 10speed it has m.th-cam.com/video/aifreHR0o8Y/w-d-xo.html
Thats not even a little true lol. Check tacoma world forums. This generation has easily been the worst of all tacomas. Between the cutting corners (drum brakes, ONE power seat FINALLY, a 2 pixel back up camera, no back seat amenities whatsoever, a plastic bed), the anemic engine and ancient transmission combo (plus worst mpgs in class) and the over pricing toyota dealers do I would say the tacoma is no match for the colorado and ranger. It purely sells off of toyotas “reliability” and nothing else. Oh and rust lol
I bet this helped a lot of people with the bronco. Seen a lot of people worried about buying the bronco cause it and the Ranger share same platforms. Look them rangers are tough if you doubt them, it’s the global Ranger that’s been here for a loooong time. Don’t believe me look it up! This Ranger is only new to us in the US!
If the ranger was at the level of those other trucks it would cost as much as 20k more. You can get FX4 on the base models for just around I think 2-3k Canadian. Which puts you around 36k before taxes. A tacoma with TRD package is over 50k, same with the ZR2 Colorado. Maybe we will see the Ranger take on the Bronco looks. Also possibly a standard cab regular bed/short bed ranger would be amazing. The ONLY thing I hesitate on for trucks is the length. I deal with crowded parking lots on the daily so that's an issue for me.
Your comment on the base bronco being the same as the fx ranger is not fair, you should comment on the base bronco competing against the base ranger! And I’m sure the base bronco will take it.
Yeah, no shit. Technically, the equivalent to the FX4 package in the Bronco is the Sasquatch, which has 11.6" of ground clearance and 35" mud terrains.
My Frontier has Dynapro ATM tires. I've been on some very rough snowmobile and ATV trails this summer. Steep hills with lots of loose rock, and a few muddy areas. The grip going uphill is amazing. But, I still don't think I'd run them in Moab. The rocks there are razor sharp.
I have a the same ranger a 2019 but I bought mine in Mexico 🇲🇽? But mine isn’t a ecoboost? Mine is a L4 turbo diesel with a 6 speed manual transmission. Ah man it’s a beast truck
Hi, I saw an XLT with electronic locking rear diff and 4wd....no FX4 package... So aside from the skid plate on the FX4, does the different suspension really make a big difference?
Great video. The Ranger isn’t designed to be a hard core off roader. It did well and it’s a nice truck for daily driving and utility. It has enough trail capabilities for most people to have some fun.
And here's a Jeep trail. It did pretty well m.th-cam.com/video/_A7BOFV2LZY/w-d-xo.html I know it's still no extreme rock crawler but gotta admit the 6inch lift with 35s look great. th-cam.com/video/aifreHR0o8Y/w-d-xo.html
The fx4 4x4 (either the mt and at) in my country has no rear or center locks. Is it necessary for these types of trails? Not doing some rock crawling just maybe some stream crossings, dirt/gravel roads, essentially some light to medium off roading (or heavy if needed but those hardcore)
The Ranger is the step child that gets very little respect I personally love this truck but I dont own one but more so from listening to owners and reviewers and it always seems to perform very well as a total package. Next gen Im getting one I just dont need one right now.
That turbo motor sounds like a great fit for a truck. All these other modern V6s don't make much low end torque, it's all at the top end which is exactly where you don't want it in a truck type vehicle. That's the worst thing about my Toyota 4Runner, the 4.0 doesn't make any low end torque. Very sluggish at low RPM.
Dude I love your videos but you said the base bronco wouldnt be better at off roading than this ranger due to have a touch less ground clearance but clearly the approach and departure angles of the bronco would provide a huge advantage.
Every trim of the Bronco except the Base has more ground clearance than the Ranger. The Base is on 30" all season tires, other trims are on 32" or taller tires. Ford says they expect anyone who wants to off road with the Base to use it as a platform for modification or add the Sasquatch package which gives 11.6" of ground clearance on 35" MT tires.
Won't affect Ranger sales since those of us who own them like having a vehicle with a bed and the ability to tow when necessary. Bronco is more of a lifestyle brand like Jeep. Vast majority will never go offroad but goes well with the soccer moms and their North Face clothing.
I think the winner here were the Hankook's all terrains. Impressive for an all-terrain to have virtually no slip in that hydro line, but I wonder how much of it was the system reacting faster than we could sense the slip or if it was really just great grip in the slosh?
Steve is the best at TFL. His torture test w the 4Runner was a sight to see and sold me on that truck. Big ballz. Can't wait to see what happens when he gets the Broncos.
This is the Ranger test I've been waiting for!! Thank you! P.S......you guys who want a Ranger Raptor. Why?!. If you're doing more than this in a factory pickup truck, buy this guy's tractor!!
I’m still holding out for a second gen Ranger with a bigger touch screen, fold flat rear seats, dampened tailgate, and maybe even a sunroof. They add those features and I’m sold.
The second gen Ford Ranger was built from 1993 to 1997, and that's only if you don't include the original Ranger which was a trim level of full sized ford truck.
I really appreciate this video you put a lot of hard work into it and it shows one of your best I’ve said to myself after I seen that tractor go into the mud this Ranger is doomed but like a little trooper man it went right through it I’m glad you’re on the team making videos
If I’m ever in the situation Steven ask to borrow my truck, I’d have to say nope, but where can I drive you, you just know the boy is heading for the mud. As usual great video, you get as excited going thru the mud as Andre does about modifications, Nathan does about drag racing, Roman does about EV’s, Tommy does about old worn out British SUV’s and Mr. Truck does about rodeo trailers. TFL Truck is some sick puppies and real truck folks love it!!!👍👍👍
I got a 2019 FX4 at a massive discount and I'm loving that truck. With just a 2" Falcon shock level and some KM3's that little truck is outstanding offroad or On.
@@Invader501st I got the Falcons for $1300, 5 KM3 32" for $1200. Though this was during the lock down panic selling, same time I bought the truck. The Falcons are realistically a 2" level. I went with 32" tires but I'm confident that a 33" would fit . Unless you want to buy offset wheels you need to keep the tires at a 255 width or the tires will contact suspension components.
How much of a discount? I’ve heard of $8,000 rebates of of selling price? What trim level and pkg, what was your discount or out the door rice before tax?
@@mitchellkasdin1899 I got an XLT pretty loaded out the door for 31K. The original window sticker was still in the glove box and it was listed at 39K. The truck was sitting on the lot for 35K. Also ford was offering 0% financing.
I Ray Out the door which includes tax for $31k. Sounds like an amazing deal! Plus 0% you stole it. This must have been early 2020 Pre Covid. So you saved $11k off of sticker (tax included). Your truck is an fX4 with tech package and tow pkg? That’s what I’ve got my eye on.

I can't wait for the Bronco, dealers will be giving away the Rangers and that's the time to buy.
Won't affect Ranger sales since those of us who own them like having a vehicle with a bed and the ability to tow when necessary. Bronco is more of a lifestyle brand like Jeep. Vast majority will never go offroad but goes well with the soccer moms and their North Face clothing.
@@frankking439 Ok ok ok ok. I know im a poser, i know...but if its dope its dope 😂
@@frankking439 they want to make a pickup version of the bronco
@@frankking439 I respectfully disagree. Time will tell.
@@brandoncaldwell95 It's a front wheel drive version based on the Bronco Sport. Not a real truck.
I still say put a v6 in it wouldn't all the turbo and make it last longer
Watch those mirrors!
I think the winner here were the Hankook's all terrains. Impressive for an all-terrain to have virtually no slip in that hydro line, but I wonder how much of it was the system reacting faster than we could sense the slip or if it was really just great grip in the slosh?
Trust me it’s not the tires.. Iv had multiple trucks come with them and they are terrible. Iv had highway tires that outperform them.
2020 Ford Ranger, the most American made pickup truck on the market!
And fully designed in Australia by Ford Australia ;-)
Now only if Ford would offer an extended range fuel tank.
So true!
Hardware stores sell them for about $15.
@@TheBeatenPaths lol!!
@@jimsomerville3924 how many gallons do you need? Mine gets 22-25 mpg. 380 miles out of last tank. Far better than my 2019 f250 6.2 with a huge tank.
tom lorenzen but you could go forever if they’d offer at 25 gallon
I hope you guys can review a Roush Ranger soon😀
I’m still holding out for a second gen Ranger with a bigger touch screen, fold flat rear seats, dampened tailgate, and maybe even a sunroof. They add those features and I’m sold.
After seeing the Bronco interior there's no way Ford can't upgrade the Ranger interior...it looks so blah now
And a bigger gas tank. 19 gallons is puny
Heated steering wheel would be nice too.
I could care less about a dampened tailgate
TFL Truck is some sick puppies and real truck folks love it!!!👍👍👍
Traded my 2019 ranger for a 2019 power wagon! No regrets, however the ranger treated me very good. Sweet ride
Steve is so charismatic... Great video
Damn, Steve is a legit badass. He actually really tests off road in the worse conditions. He is the Best tester in the TFL by FAR ! 👍👍👍
I got a 2019 FX4 at a massive discount and I'm loving that truck. With just a 2" Falcon shock level and some KM3's that little truck is outstanding offroad or On.
If you dont mind me asking how much? I have a 2019 xlt and I'm looking to upgrade the shocks and add a 2 - 3 inch lift
Do all FX4’ s have trail control? I have a F-150 , FX4 2020
Only in the Ranger, I believe.
You have such an awesome channel! I really love the fact that you make these trucks work for a review and not just pussy foot around for the companies. Good job guys!
