Best Dirt Bike for Short Riders: KTM Freeride 250R Modified For Single Track
The 2015 KTM Freeride 250 R is an awesome and unique two-stroke dirt bike that is a hybrid between a trials bike and a full-size MX bike. It's also on the smaller side, so it's a great starting point for shorter dirt bike riders who need a lower seat height.
Sadly, in stock form, the bike doesn't run well, does not work particularly well in any particular riding scenario, and still has a seat height that is too tall for anyone under 5'6." This bike is being built for SourceADV host, Mark Jackson's, father so he can comfortably learn singletrack dirt bike riding because he is right around 5'6".
*The bike will be optimized for single-track dirt bike riding using the following parts:*
• 28MM SmartCarb
smartcarb.com/shop/smartcarb-for-ktm-freeride/
• Lowered & Revalved Suspension By EnduroSpec
www.endurospec.com/
• Scalvani Exhaust Pipe from Slavens Racing
slavensracing.com/shop/ktm-freeride-250-pipe-carbon-silencer-scalvini/
• Goldentyre GT333 Rear Tire & Bridgestone M59 Front
• Tubeliss Tire System
SmartCarb Installation Video on Yamaha YZ250X:

The Freeride runs so much better with the 28MM SmartCarb, new pipe and airbox modification.

You still might have to change the chain length with 13-49, as you are 2 teeth shy of stock. The ration is closer to 3 teeth in the rear than 2.5. I am just going to add 2 teeth in the rear, and keep the 14 tooth sprocket because more teeth is easier on the chain I believe, (one more tooth sharing the load). People who are really picky about their suspension/geometry can get picky about the axle placement. But I don't think that trumps gear choices.

Awesome build! As I get older, I'm looking at lighter and lighter bikes to ride the BDR'S! Very interested in your setup but with a 690/701! I have a 23 500 6-days but I'd like to keep that as a trails only bike with minimalistic approach! Only advice I'd like to give is to NEVER mount your 500 with the kick stand down or use it as a pivot point! Your stand will definitely snap off! Great video though!

My truck's also lifted like your's and I often get people flashing me because my old OEM reflector housings are dazzling oncoming driver's with the LED's in them. @@SourceADV yep I have the 360s on my 300. I have vibration reducing bar mounts. It’s mainly the seat and pegs. Will try the rubber peg mounts. I’m usually not running 70 more than 5 mins. Would like to go farther but vibes stopping me from that. Will try a 45 rear to reduce the revs or a 15 front. I love the 500 for everything except 65+ mph. Not what it’s made for I know but can always dream of that unicorn. 😀

@@jeffmm1474 Try the 15 front man, at least you wont have to mess with chain length. It will probably kill technical singletrack riding sadly. No real unicorns out there... all though the Kove 450 Rally has definitely caught my eye!

These bikes had a deadly reputation for a reason. For the experienced rider no problem. But because they were cheap ,but for many first time riders it was deadly.

Makes sense, definitely not a beginner bike with a light switch power band like this thing has.

In 1979 I bought a Daytona special from Ricky Orlando at the Yamaha shop in Boulder. Two weeks before he won the US stock 400 nationals on the same bike. I loved it. I am looking for another now, just found one in my neighborhood in Washingtin State and I’m going to look at it.

Dope bike perfect size weight power and capability. What kills it for me is the maintenance schedule.... Changing oil ever 500 miles and having to inspect valves ever 1000 miles does not work out for a long range adventure bike. Otherwise unicornnmnm

Honestly look at the Kove 450 rally, add the race ecu and exhaust. Everyone is loving those things and they are truly ready to go with a 300 mile range

@SourceADV that's very well documented, thanks for sharing. I am interested in the tower myself for a 350 EXC-F and am wondering how the weight on the front feels while riding off-road?

It’s a noticeable difference for sure. You can get around with one step up in spring rate, but in general it really makes the bike a rally bike, singletrack is not really on the menu any more if there are trees. Honestly I would highly recommend looking at the Kove 450 street legal rally bike if you want to go down that path. It seems to be a real winner

Great bike BUT you absolutely need to stay on the trail. Deviating from the trail causes damage to the ground which provides ammo to all those who want to stop us from enjoying trail riding.

Great bike! I'm starting my 500 EXC ADV build shortly and noticed you've got the 690/701 indicator/light/horn switch on there, is this plug and play or did you have to cut into the loom to make this compatible?
