I just finished the exact same thing on a KLX400 {DRZ}. Got a little vid on my page. The more I opened up, the more chitty maintenance I found and started getting pissed, regretted buying it. But stuck with it, bike turned out great. These things are bullet proof tanks with power.
I bought an ‘04 DRZ400S a little over a week ago. Just going over it inspecting stuff and finding things to repair and fix has made me a better mechanic already 😅 I’ve never dealt with carbs before and today there were a bit of fuel coming out of one of the overflow hoses underneath the bike. I guess I’m about to learn how carbs work from the inside!
SUBSCRIBED! Use some blue thread lock on all the bolts that hold the plastic body panels on. You will thank me later. The RACK-IT (Pro Moto Billet) racks are awesome. I’ve had mine since 2006 on my 2002 DRZ. Yep. I’ve had a DRZ that long- bought it in 2006. It has a little over 16k miles on it.
That was a pretty good video.👍 Didn't really learn anything I didn't already know, but I've been doing bikes for a long time. I'm the old super bike guy. That old guy that has 4 or 5, 30 year old liter bikes plus a couple of oddballs. My recently acquired DRZsm it's the oddball. It's actually a joy to work on. So little bodywork and most everything is right where you can access it. I've spent the last week tinkering with it. It has a nice long list of upgrades. Most of the standards and a few that were pretty expensive. I've only had it a little over a week. So far the only thing I've found that needs attention is the carb. Its got a nice pumper that might need a cleaning. As the weather gets colder and wetter here in the PNW. This will be my go to, for wet riding. So far I'm really happy with it. Finally filled the last open slot in the line up. Yesterday I had a highschool kid first bump me at a light. Apparently you can't tell I'm 55 years old on this thing 😁
Thanks man! The DRZ400 is definitely one of the most reliable bikes you can get hands down. I don't want to spoil the last episode, but lets just say that this bike did way better on the AZBDR adventure than any of the KTM's I have ridden.
@@SourceADV you complained the rad bolt wasn't long enough. Then you showed a extremely long one on the lower. In the future you can measure. Too long is dangerous too! Break or puncture something. You can bottom out the bolt tip and get a false torque reading, etc.
I’m partial to the KTM 450/500’s, the DRZ is definitely an older tech, much heavier bike. But with that the S/m choice all depends on whether you want to ride dirt or pavement. Cheers
My guy keeps saying budget bike. I spent $1,200 on a DRZ400E that I later made street legal and did a fair amount of modifications to. I still ride it. That bike is budget haha
@@SourceADV Very true. I still think some people are listing bikes for way more than they’re worth. The funniest thing about my DRZ is I scored a full Ti Yoshi on eBay for cheap. So this exhaust system that was a $1K new is near equal to what I paid for the rest of motorcycle.
We’ll see. It’s possible a lot more people started riding motorcycles during COVID and there is now just fundamentally more demand and new bike prices are so high that it might stay higher than before… but I totally agree that it will come down a fair amount still

All the smaller bore bikes shake themselves a lot on adventure riding, loctite is your best friend :)

Nice man! Sounds like you have a float level issue or float needle issue. Best of luck!
@@SourceADV Thats what I’ve found out as well from reading online. Ordering a rebuild kit and opening it up as soon as it arrives!
Nice! Good luck man

Oh yeah that makes a lot of sense! Thank you for the advice!
I wasn't aware that my state had one of those BDR trails nice.
Yup I think there’s about 12 of them now
That was a pretty good video.👍

Haha! Thanks man! Enjoy that bike!

Thanks!
Awesome video. Can i send the dr im thinking about getting to you to do a once over lol
Sorry man! That’s one’s on you 🤣
I switched the throttle cable to the bottom side of the bar, gives you a little more slack
Oh nice, never tried that. That’s a good idea. Cheers!
Epic build! Reliability-wise, how would you rank this bike vs. other common bikes for BDR adventures?

@@SourceADV Thanks for the quick reply and info - really looking forward to the next couple of episodes!
Steel: thread engagement 1.5X diameter
Aluminium: thread engagement 2X diameter
Sorry what do you mean?
@@SourceADV length of thread required for your diameter bolt. I design engines.
Sorry which bolt? I made this video a while back

Luckily I had a bunch of different lengths. The radiator guard was changing the length for the stock bolt. It was only going in like 4 turns.
Just subscribed awesome video
I’m looking to get a drz not sure if I should get the s or.. sm please give me your feed back

What year yz450 did u purchase front fender for?
I think it was a 2017. It’s been a minute, sorry

Probably needs the "free power mod"
Yeah that could be it for sure! That new battery was strong while I had the bike
I would rip it how it is hahah!
Heck yeah you would! Haha
