Concept Album Concerts From The 70's
Back in the 70's, artists used to play their new albums live. Fans bought the albums and wanted to hear the new material. On some occasions, these brave artists would play the complete new album, often a concept album in their entirety. Sometimes before the albums were even released. That's courageous, that's believing in your material, even if the critics trashed you. Here's some legendary examples of Courageous Concept Album Concerts.

I got into FM in 1987 with TITN and bought all the albums from 1975 to TITN. I bought the early Peter Green stufff and Bob Welch a few years ago. I only bought Behind The Mask, Time and Say You Will recently as they were cheap used. Just listened to Time today and it’s not that great. The last track with the spoken word is super cringy! Best avoided! Say You Will lacks coherence but it’s better than Time.

Excellent idea and very nicely put across. And so true. I can remember seeing the Lamb performed in its entirety in April 1975 at Wembley and having absolutely no clue whatsoever what was going on as I hadn't heard the album. On a personal level, the whole show was saved by the encores of Watcher of the Skies & The Musical Box, if memory serves. The irony being that the Lamb subsequently became my second-favourite Genesis album. I am pretty sure that the final European shows were also cancelled because of poor ticket sales too, btw. And in seven weeks time (I apologise for mentioning it again), I shall be entertained by a certain Mr. Wakeman performing the whole of 'Journey' live at this year's Cropredy!! That'll be a lot of fun, I think.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I agree entirely. Perhaps living under the shadow of the bomb, and we did in the '70s (and maybe are again today, at least over here. Trump's sacrificial island?), somehow meant people, including rock bands, took more chances with the time they thought they had. I don't think we were that convinced we'd all live to old age. Or maybe that's all bullshit! Lol! Wakeman is a lovely guy, as you have found out for yourself. Last saw him a couple of years ago doing a solo piano/stand-up comedy show in front of 200 people in a little town a few miles from where I live (songs included Strawberry Fields/While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Morning Has Broken, And You And I, Jane Seymore, Merlin, and Life on Mars, among others!!). And he's played Cropredy before. This year he has Matt Pegg, Dave's son, on bass (time moves on - Matt Pegg is in his mid-50s now!). Apparently the Genesis gig I attended in 1975 was recorded in full but only snippets have ever been released for some reason - you probably know more than me about this.

One reviewer attempted reading this photo collection monstrosity and 'found it impossible to read.' Even wearing glasses in good light my 71-year-old eyes couldn't read the fine print text, made more problematic by the distracting color photos that border every paragraph. I was determined trifles like tiny print would be no impediment. My little dollar flashlight revealed intensely interesting stuff about the band formation, waiting around hours to jam at clubs, what amps/guitars they bought, how the lineup solidified and day-to-day band stuff maybe others don't find entertaining. It's probably nothing I hadn't already read in Stone Alone but forgot (rereading that next). Thank you for “editing” the CD and album covers that feature nudity and/or provocative poses in order to protect us viewers from being offended by what is natural, normal and an art form. By doing that, you doubtlessly have made TH-cam forgive you for Part 1 of this video series, and enabled it to further focus on showing videos of fully-clothed newsmakers who promote hate and violence. I’m guessing that those who thought the Part 1 video was a threat to “decency,” if you will, have no problem watching and listening to such newsmakers. I’m also guessing that these members of the self-righteous police never go to an art museum or look at billboards and magazine ads. Many, many network TV shows - including TV commercials - and just about everything on cable television could not be watched by them. Certainly, their film selections at the movie theater are greatly limited. An individual’s choice is just that, and I believe that everyone has a right to pick what they’re comfortable with - if they’re not hurting anyone or infringing on someone else’s choice. Censoring what should be someone else’s choice is not acceptable to me. If someone finds a video, TV show, film, etc. to be offensive, they have the choice to turn it off. I love comedian Ricky Gervais’ quote: “Just because you’re offended by something doesn’t mean you should be or that it really is offensive.” Others can have a much different reaction. So, for viewers, like me, who find the topic of sexy album covers to be fun, I thank you, Alan, for forging ahead with this Part 2 video. As a straight woman, I thank you for including the Grand Funk Railroad and the Peter Frampton album covers. Other sexy album covers that strike my fancy are: “Sticky Fingers;” “Born in the U.S.A.;” “Souvenirs;” “The Best of Gregg Allman;” “The Best of Jackson Browne;” and “Buckingham Nicks” (from the Part 1 video). Notice a boring pattern here? I’ve yet to see a sexy album cover that uses creativity to get a straight woman’s attention. By the way, I think that both the Fotomaker and the Blind Faith album covers are unsettling. I can’t think of another album cover as romantic as “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

Orchid club was made to be the opener because The Hunter was actually a concept album. And I think the main thing that is out of place about it is just the fact that it is too long. You get to that point where the momentum drops off and it drags and drags musically and you swear your getting to the end of it and then all of a sudden she starts singing again and it catches you off guard. As for English Boys it was the second single and a video promo was made for it's release but I think they only released it as such in Europe and not for North America. The video is on TH-cam here. Danceway was considered to be released as a radio single in Canada only but it never happened. And yeah to me War Child was certainly made to be a single but no promo was ever made for it to my knowledge. I am 49 so I was very young when Blondie was the big thing and Autoamerican was the only one I heard as a child. So years later in the mid 90s when I got into them die hard being a fan of older music in my teens and 20s I had a love for Autoamerican more so then the first 4 albums. And the Hunter was this strange not so well known album to me which gave it this mystical have to be sought after album to have in my collection. But back in the 90s to get it on CD was very hard to find. My mother was on a trip back in 1996 and found it used in an old record shop and I played that CD to death being very happy to had finally have it in my collection. It is still on my main list for music to listen to when I am at work to this day and The Hunter is my favorite Blondie album because it is so different and perhaps not so polished as the rest. You mentioned Fleetwood Mac's Tusk album and I just want to point out that a song like Sister's of the moon had such a raw unpolished quality to it that it is so refreshing to this day when compared to the stuff on Rumours, even more so the the single "Tusk". After a band has had so much success I can certainly understand as an artist wanting to branch out and try different things. The Hunter is a neat album that just did not have the big single to carry it off. Not as polished as Autoamerican and does have a bit of an erratic flow to it, but it does grow on you after a few listens. One may argue The hunter had more energy then Autoamerican but lyrically had less of what the average listener can relate to when comparing the two. The Hunter just does not resonate well with people that listen to music but don't know music or have any understanding of it aside from can I relate to this song or not. I am a guitar player myself, I understand music and so judge it differently then the person who simply dances to it or listens to it in the car or the radio at work.

Thanks for your excellent comments on the overlooked, undervalued The Hunter. You know I'm a fan of it. I listen to The Hunter way way more than Autoamerican. And The Hunter continues to be a "go-to" Blondie album for me as well. But overall, yea, you have to be a fan and not a casual listener. Funny that my favorite track on the album is probably For Your Eyes Only, which they submitted to be the title track of the James Bond movie and it was rejected. Another great track from the album.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow For your eyes only is a great song. I think it was Debbie Harry herself that convinced Chris they should include it on this album. And you know thinking about the last comment I made...every artist who has had big success at some point has an album like this because once your at the top where do you go? And the music market changes all the time like any other product. As an artist choosing which direction to go with your sound in trying to keep up what you have created but at the same time compete with what new and up coming musicians are charting with beside you can be a lot of stress after a few years of being around. In 1981-82 some of the members of Blondie are pretty worn out and some of them have gotten knee deep in to drugs to cope with being at the top and Chris got that rare medical condition (forget what it was called) and was very sick and the doctors did not know how to deal with it at first. It was putting stress on Chris and Debbie's marriage and the band, so yeah there was lot's going on behind the scenes during the making of this album. And the other fact is look at the new artists that are just coming out at that time. Madonna with her single Lucky Star is all over the radio and it's a new sound. Prince has taken off, Duran Duran and Culture Club are just starting to make some waves. Within a year of The Hunter's release it's almost a whole new order of synth related pop type artists dominating the charts. I think Talking Heads may have been the only CBGB scene survivor from the Blondie era to have chart success knee deep into the 1980's.. Blondie to their credit were trying new things to keep themselves interesting and fresh in the music market. But they had so many things happening all at once going against the making of this album and it's chances of success. I think in it's own right it is a very special album considering all of those factors. The Hunter has it's place my friend. It does have it's fans and I am certainly one of those. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

Solid video - thank you! The Kinks RCA period is A miss for me - and I'm a HUGE Kinks guy! Muswell Hillbillies being the exception- that's a go to album. One of my fave Kinks albums. Same with Tull - it seems like instead of trying out concept album after concept album Ian Anderson changed the whole idea of Tull as a band. I LOVE their Heavy Horses permutation and saw all these shows at the time. I don't blame inflation as much as the sheer greed of corps like Ticketmaster and such. My first Springsteen show in 78 was 8$. I've NEVER spent a better 8$ and I probably talked a girl into springing for tickets anyway. Rock on!🤘😎🤘

Thanks - I agree Muswell Hillbillies is by far the Kinks best RCA album - great album. And yes, my point was that inflation is not the cause at all of the current pricing. If it was inflation, we would be paying between $45 to $65 dollars in todays world. Springsteen in 1978 for $8 is a fantastic example - and a 2 1/2 + hour show.

Remix are completely creating a new album, and I love the Stones albums as they were originally mixed designed. I remember Jagger wanted to remix Exile. Thank God that hasn't happened.
