My Top 12 Favorite Bands / Artists Of All Time!!!

- I've spent days analyzing my database, how many albums I have per band, how many of my all time favorite albums are by those artists, how much I still listen to those albums & bands to come up with my definitive list of my all-time favorite bands / artists. You asked for it. Here's the results. Here's my Top 12 Favorite Bands / Artists of All Time.
Great bunch of bands on the list. The one that surprised me in a good way was the Kinks. (Didn't realize they had so many albums) 😁🎶✌️

That was an interesting list. Stones, Bowie, Who, and Kinks, are all top ten for me. I know you referenced 1973 as a starting point. With those bands rated so high I'm curious why The Beatles didn't make the list. There's an obvious connection with those other British acts and the fabs.
@@catsofsherman1316 I have every Beatles albums and tons of their solo. But I don’t listen to the Beatles as much as the other acts in my list. For me the most important criteria with my music is how much I listen and or listened to it. As great as the Beatles are I don’t put them on that much.

Thanks- remember that video is my top 12 favorite bands of all time. Not albums - bands. There can be only 12 there. I love The Beatles, Police, Doors, CCR, Pretenders, Pink Floyd and some Elvis. In fact I have every album by those bands (not Elvis). So I'm a big fan of them. Just not in my top 12 - Top 20 - yea. Thanks again.

Oh yea - it's horrible - special remaster - i'm there, remaster with bonus tracks - I'm there, deluxe 2 CD set - I'm there - box set - I'm there Actually sucks. But in most cases I do dump the earlier versions and keep the best - except for The Stones, Who, Zeppelin, some Kinks but not all. Yea they rip me off royally, of my own volition though.

Cool one although missed beach boys + of course the beatles, even if don't own much. Very interesting lists except never use "the" as first word. 1973???

I only own 3 of the Artist's you've mentioned and only Dylan & The Stone's would be classified as Favourite's.

A Passion Play by Jethro Till is my #1 close #2 is Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin, Making Movies by Dire Straits is my #3. Not many peeps have Wishbone Ash in their Top 10, great band and inspiring choice! Procul Harum and Rush round out my top 5 favorite bands. The Stones, the Beatles and The Who would definitely be high on my list.
Sounds like a very cool list you have. I really like Passion Play but still not an easy listen. I have to be in the mood. I like Procol Harum but never enough to go really deep in their catalog.

It's hard to do these - All great / classic choice you made - Funny thing with me about Let It Bleed - song for song / pound for pound - probably the Stones strongest album. BUT - I much prefer Love In Vain, Live With Me and Midnight Rambler Live from Ya Ya's - so much so that the studio versions for me are lacking. And for me, as cool as Country Honk is - Honky Tonk Women would have been insanely great on the album. Best, Alan
I was born in 1977 so I'm gonna take a stab at my top ten or so favorite artists of all time. I agree 100% with you that Sticky Fingers is the greatest album of all time and the Stones are my number one favorite artist ever. I think I have Fleetwood Mac and Bob Marley and the Wailers probably tied for number two. The rest I won't try to rank off the top of my head: Sade, 2Pac, OutKast, Foals, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Earth, Wind and Fire, and maybe Tears for Fears has cracked my top 12 by now. If you don't know who Foals are, you need to dive in. My favorite band of the last fifteen years.
Really interesting list - thanks for sharing - I totally appreciate your diverse tastes - really well rounded. Fleetwood Mac is a favorite of mine too but further down my list - great band to love since they have so many periods and are so different - really different bands.
Thank you, Alan for posting. I agree with a couple of bands you got in yar list. I saw tha KINKS in early 80s and man, they we're on fire. Right on, if ya want, take out a look of THE KINKS LIVE AT THE "ROCKPALAST"/83?. They're on fire, like I said. - JETHRO TULL... Don't know how often I saw em live, countless. I really really lof "songs from the wood",, "aqualung", "too old to r.&r. too young to die" and "broadsword and the beast" & "crest of a knave "... - I would change GENESIS to YES, but it's as ya know always a question of taste. This is why I got Mini Vannilli on tha Poolposition! Sorry, just KIDDING! - Maybe I'll sent ya my favorites, but don't put me to the "FBI most wanted" if you don't agree! - By the way, "infidels" is my favorite DYLAN album too. - & the real Poolposition is THE ROLLING STONES, like you know. - Last time you wrote to me, the issue was right but you wrote "hello Andy..." Sorry my Burdon freak friend Aaron - typo - typing too fast. We're in the minority with Infidels - but...we have good taste. Yes (well classic Yes with Jon Anderson) is a favorite of mine as well - just further down the list. I have a boot of that Kinks and yes, they're smoking for sure. Yea - send your list - it's all for fun you know. We all have personal taste. But will your list be all Burden...that is the question...lol
The Kinks are also my 2nd favorite band and surprise surprise my favorite album of theirs is Sleepwalker
That's so awesome - we are in the minority - what a great album though and was really the beginning of bringing them back big time in the US.

I was exposed to erectile dysfunction commercial before your video played. Is somebody trying to tell me something 😂. Well, the Stones would be my favorite. What were the Beatles in your favorite bands number? I would have put them in my top 10. As for Bowie, my go to album is Ziggy Stardust. Looking forward to the Ziggy Box and the Blu-ray of the album in the fall. Now you have to do a top 10 singer/ songwriter list.......
Really and ED commercial - maybe they're telling me something. Well the Beatles didn't make my top 12 - don't know where they would fall - I have 70 Beatle albums (holy shit) but I'm rarely in the mood to put them on. Of course when I do, they're great. And in the greatest bands of all time, I would put Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin (plus I throw in U2, Dylan and Springsteen). But as for my favorites - since I don't listen to them too much...they're not that high. Top 10 Singer Songwriters David - wow - that's a good one. I'll do it but not too soon. But that's your idea - awesome one - thanks.

Thanks - nice to see Sleepwalker in there - rarely see that on a list and like I said those Kinks Arista albums were fantastic - damn whatever anyone else says. I forgot to mention Give The People What They Want - another fantastic Kinks album from then.
Nice list and I would agree the Stones are the #1 band of all time. I am not big fan of Genesis or Wishbone Ash. I would include Guns N Roses as Use Your Illusion both #1 and #2 are excellent and very underrated.

Alan, I saw U2 open for the J. Geils band on the Freeze Frame tour at the LA sports Arena. I think it was around ‘81 or so? Bono came out and sat in the audience and they were barely known at the time.

Yea - I do have exactly 70 Beatle albums, problem is compared to the 12 on my list, I rarely feel like listening to them, but doesn't take away of course from their greatness - incredible band / music.
Wishbone ash is definitely a band that I've loved ever since I got Argus on cd in 2002 it blew my mind I always thought that nobody else knew about this band but me but I'm so glad to see fans like you giving this band so much love Andy Powell and Laurie wisefield are in my top 20 favorite guitarists of all time and those 2 were such a great guitar team

Enjoyable video Alan. A fair amount of overlap with my favourites. I like Genesis and The Kinks but they wouldn’t make my top 12. I never got into Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash or Dire Straits. I would probably include Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Marley and last few places would be difficult to figure out but likely Yes and maybe Miles Davis. Love this stuff 😂

Love seeing your list. GHS at number 1 makes me smile - you know how special that album is to me - my first Stones album I bought when it first came out, when I was ten! And still listen to it four to five times a year - truly timeless. Great to see Tull, Kinks at #2 too!!!. Yes just outside my top 12 by the way. Quadrophenia - we match!!!. I'm still working on Gentle Giant - been in my backlog for like 4 years. Humble Pie and Mott - I actually like Ian Hunter solo more than Mott, but that's just me. Cool to Heep so high. wow that's in interesting list - LOVE seeing Tull so high. Elton John too is an interesting pick - I have 48 Elton John albums so I'm a big fan - but he is so hit or miss sometimes. Now.....The Outlaws - that's cool. Love Them - also Henry Paul Band - I even bought Blackhawk albums with Henry Paul. Nice choice. Though for me they're not as high as Charlie Daniels, Allmans, Skynyrd, Tucker....but still awesome.
Yeah, I've always liked the Outlaws. (Not so much Henry Paul, he is a little too country). Hughie Thomasson was always a favorite of mine. Actually, I'm probably more into progressive rock, (Tull, Styx and Kansas), but like I said my list does change from time to time.

Great list and I love everyone of your selections - though I wouldn't including Kink Kronikles or Masterpieces by Dylan because they are compilations. But yea - they are great compilations. Funny gotta be honest, most think Live Dead is amongst the greatest live albums - it never did that much for me...lol. I much prefer other Dead live albums. Thanks.

Well you're certainly diverse. The Partridge Family...really. well different strokes for different folks. It's all personal regarding how music makes us feel. I did used to watch the show when I was a kid and had a major crush on Susan Dey (who didn't). But certainly never bought an album. But glad you love them, although the songs were written and played by professional studio musicians of course. Best, Alan

I'll watch your Manic Street Preachers show, so there will be one more view and like. I know very little about them but they had a following at one time.
Rick Beato is massive, but he is a bit his own beast, being a songwriter, an instrumentalist, a record producer, a studio owner and a music theoretician. If he played violin, I would say he has many strings to his bow.
The largest music fan site I watch is Sea of Tranquility, who have around 100,000 subscribers. Pete Pardo is a superb host, and they have three star performers: Luis Villegas, Steven Reid and Martin Popoff. But they they are very focused on Prog and Metal - which I guess is where the bulk of the rock enthusiast audience is - and I am not interested in most of the bands they talk about, such Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rush etc. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep more so. (We won't mention the hideous Led Zeppelin).
Instead, I go for the much smaller sites who tend to be into mainstream rock, like yours. As a book publisher, I know you write where your heart is or where the money is - and you are really lucky if those two coincide. I have even heard of all the bands you talk about, and know a fair chunk of their music. Sadly, even you don't stretch into my darkest corners, but I confess that it is best that you don't go there. Still, I want to know a lot more about The Rolling Stones, so you must be my guy. Rumor has it that you know at least a half-dozen of their songs, and it's high time I listened to 'Goat's Head Soup' and 'It's Only Rock N Roll.'
Thanks so much. I think Pete Pardo has done an incredible job - I really enjoy his channel (though don't watch it as much as I used to). He's created an empire and well deserved. Super knowledgable. Though I remember him saying he doesn't have a stereo system so how does he play his 20,000 CD's. I'm not sure. I also don't personally like some of the music they cover - but they sure know their stuff. Popoff is the most successful rock writer out there - incredible what he pumps out and so knowledgable - wow. Oh you have to listen to Goats Head Soup and then follow it up with IORR. I think GHS is much stronger but Time Waits For No One....as I like to say....I go to heaven. PS Rick Beato is in his own league - I can't imagine and what a talent - great interviewer too. And you're a book publisher - well how cool is that. The obvious question - do you publish music books (or horror movie books). I'm a VORACIOUS reader.....inquiring minds would like to know.

Really enjoyed this Alan, well done by ya!…Almost lost my footing when ya picked “Achtung Baby” as your go-to U2, NOBODY ever gives that masterpiece any luv, it may just be my most played album on a yearly basis….BTW, Dire Straits “On Every Street” is also terrific, it kinda sank w/o a trace upon release but remains a worthy follow up to blockbuster “Brothers In Arms”…..Dig your YT Channel!

@@richard-mr1vz Dire Straits is one of the top top favorite bands. But was kind of a fluke that they made it so big in America - really because of Money For Nothing video on MTV. They never tried to be really big. I think at least in America - they lost much of their audience because they were huge true fans - just fans of Money for Nothing and some of the other Brothers In Arms hits. On Every Street is a FANTASTIC album

Hi Alan -great list, love all of those artists. Interesting that most of your list is from over the pond lol. Only two American artists out of 12 !! The Beatles at No1 (a no brainer), Jimi Hendrix, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Dylan, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, CSN&Y, Neil Young, Doors. Something like that. That is a really quick list done in 10 seconds so it would probably change given more time. Cya Doug

Oh yea - 15 Lou Reed albums and lots of Velvet Underground (who I like even more than Lou Reed). But Lou's discography is really big and I'm pretty satisfied with the ones I have - he can be very hit or miss. I'm a big fan of live albums and beyond Rock n Roll Animal - I love his "rare" Live In Italy album too.
Oh, and by the way, there must be a deep reason why Led Zeppelin hit the floor 😂😂

That's an awesome list. Loving seeing Loaded by VU in there - that's my most listened to VU album and I love it too. Kinks One More For The Road is an interesting choice - assuming one of your first Kinks album so must've made a great impression on you - The video's a good one too. @@TheAlanRosenbergShow The problem with the Kinks is their hits are spread out over a long period that you try to narrow it down to one album that really grabs you as your go to and well, their live album and video really shows off pretty much the best of their overall efforts through 3 decades. I know the choice was really a greatest hits album live so yes, I cheated just once. If I was forced to choose one studio album I would have to choose "Kinks Controversy" with more than half the tunes are awesome, but still not close to a perfect album. I like Arthur but it has some filler and is a bit overly British nostalgic.
@@tntstorms7969 Thats actually really true. I always say my 2nd favorite band is either The Kinks or The Who (Stones #1 of course for me). The reason is as you said - they're completely different in that The Who has a relatively small amount of albums, largely filled with great songs while the Kinks actually have many more all time favorite songs for me but spread over a huge amount of imperfect albums. So although I have every Kinks album and do love them, I tend to listen to Kinks compilations (there's a ton of them) or live albums. I'm with you all the way. With that said - The Kinks Arista years albums are amongst my favorites - especially Sleepwalker, Misfits, Low Budget, Give The People What They Want, so your live album choice is right in the pocket. Definitely agree with you regarding Physical Graffiti, Quadrophenia and Sleepwalker, my favorite album by each of those artists, in fact Quadro and Phys Graff are two of my three favorite albums of all time. The third? Station to Station, so we disagree about our go to Bowie albums. Sticky Fingers would be my number two after Let It Bleed, and with Springsteen it has to be Darkness on the Edge of Town. Odd, to me at least, that Out of All this Blue is in your top three Waterboys albums. A lot of great tracks, but much too long considering the lack of diversity in the songwriting. I admit, I haven't owned it all that long so I need to give it more time, starting today maybe! This Is the Sea and Modern Blues would also be in my top three, with Fisherman's Blues rounding it off. Those top three are not my top 3 Waterboys albums. Those Waterboys albums were in my top 3 favorite - most listened to albums in the years I got them. Every year I choose my top 3 favorite albums I got that year - The Waterboys have gone top 3 three times - pretty impressive, but doesn't necesarily mean they're my top 3 favorite Waterboys albums overall. Hope that makes sense..

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Gotta be honest, Alan, I had the exact same reaction as the other listens. The first disc is mostly great, but it starts to dwindle off around the midpoint of disc number two. It could have been a really great single album, or even double album if Scott had kept it around 80 minutes. As it is, it's just too much, and will never be one of my go to Waterboys albums. But I'll continue to pull it out on occasion. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement!

I like Deep Purple and have a bunch of Purple albums. But not in my personal top12 (or 20). Funny but I actually listen to Rainbow and Blackmore's Night more than Purple. In fact, I listen to Uriah Heep more than Purple and Uriah Heep was always considered "the poor man's Deep Purple". But yea, I do really like Purple.

Thanks for sharing. Lot's of really classic stuff there. Funny thing. I'm an original Genesis fan from 1973. When Selling England first came out, was considered a bit of a disappointment. Even some of the band felt some of it was a bit bloated (like Epping Forest). Of course over time, pretty typical to see Selling England as the favorite Genesis album. But of course Exile didn't get great reviews when it came out as well. I have to check out that Neal Morse album - not familiar with it. Thanks.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Pere Ubu is a bit industrial/experimental, from Cleveland OH, think of a harder edged/less commercial Devo. They have close to 20 albums, most of them good. I would recommend their first two official releases, Modern Dance and Dub Housing , along with a collection of pre album singles, Datapanik in the Year Zero. Two other late albums I would strongly recommend are The Tenement Year(my AOTY for 1988) and Pennsylvania. Also, there is a reunion album in the early 2000's from Rocket From the Tombs, which was the precursor band to both Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys, which is absolutely killer. Richard Lloyd from Television plays Lead Guitar on it and it's great!

Interesting concept - but not sure I understand in your lists because The Stones and Stephen Stills and New Riders and way older than 30 years and two of them are in the original list? I guess your favorites in your last 30 years then, but for me my list wouldn't change. My top artists are still my top artists - no newer artists, and there are many newer ones I really really love, but not approaching the top top for me. I'm not familiar with many of the last 30 years in your list - interesting choices. Thanks.

Not played Dylan (apart from one LP) for 20 year's, Jefferson, same other than Hot Tuna so thought I'd do it that way. I've bought Stone's & NRPS album's recently and still play them constantly, hence WHY they are in the current list.Like having 2 live's Alan, LOL. A 'Born Again Music Listener'.

Here we have astonishingly many coinceddenses. The Stones are my number 1.I like U2 too. But surprisingly with you is that those who like so called roоtrock don't like U2. I'm from another generation and my list is RS, U2, Oasis and RHCP the three last is equally. Bruce Springsteen - I like very much The Rising album.
Thanks so much - what is routrock? and they don't like U2. Here in America - U2 is still one of the biggest bands in the world, but there is a whole percentage of music fans who love to hate U2 - it's interesting. Maybe they got too big - too pretentious - but many really hate them. But I actually put them in the pantheon with Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin - yes I think U2 are up there with them.

100% with you on The Kinks Alan; except they are my favorite band of all time with Sutherland Brothers with and without Quiver being a very close second. I understand the Stones being your top pick and deeply respect their huge contribution to the legacy of rock, however, in my opinion, nobody and I mean no other artist has conveyed the challenges and the joys of human existence so bluntly as only Ray Davies did, and yet I believe The Kinks are the only act in your list that never had a platinum album in the States . My go to album was the album which truly initiated their rebirth "Low Budget" with "Muswell Hillbillies", "Everybody's in Showbiz" and "Word of Mouth" close behind. Their "One for the Road" is my second favorite live album of all time, and the Velvel (?) version of their "Come Dancing..." compilation is tied with Al Stewart's " Songs from the Radio" as the best single disc compilation for an artist (though Stewart's needs an anniversary expanded edition which will more than likely not happen) . You missed "Give the People what they Want" (which is kinda funny because you've mentioned in the past for it being very underrated). That was their last Gold album in the U.S. I think "State of Confusion" though having their highest charting single) turned off their newly found fan base because of the newer pop sound they initiated at that time. Tull and Zeppelin are awesome choices as well. My favorite Tull albums are " War Child" and "Living in the Past"; I love "Rockestrations"! For Zeppelin I agree, "Physical Graffiti" as well as "Houses of the Holy" are tops from them. Al Stewart I keep on a separate list as he is more in the singer/ songwriter vein. However, someone (albeit not on this channel) placed his "Year of the Cat" album higher than Springsteen's "The River" which I thought was quite interesting. "Glory Days" for me is synonymous as "Only the Good Die Young" is for you. Talk about playing a song to death!!!! As for Bob Dylan who doesn't have a top 10/12 list without him on it. "Watching the River flow" is very Davies-easque and a personal fave along with "Silvio". "Greatest Hits Vol. 2" and "Down in the Groove" are my Dylan highlights. Once again Alan, thanks for the video, look forward to your upcoming concert review!!✨💫✨ -- Gee, nobody has The Doobie Brothers on their lists? (Number 4 on mine).

But yes that's amongst my favorite albums by anyone. Fantastic Kinks album. Art Lover, Better Things etc - doesn't get better. Everybody's In Showbiz was my first Kinks album ever - on 8 track and the live / studio tracks were mixed together - talk about a different listening experience - it worked really well. I'm a fan of Al Stewart as well and I do like the pre McDonald Doobies, but not a huge favorite of mine. Thanks again.

Norther Lights / Southern Cross is my "go-to" Band album and Acadian Driftwood is a personal favorite. The 4 CD Last Waltz boxset has a live version of it on it.
Great choices - prog heaven in that top 4 (well except for Rush - but that's just me). I'm not a fan of Priest either but I totally get it. Really wide taste and that's awesome!!!!
@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Yeah, Rush is not for everyone. A lot of people can't get past Geddy's voice and I understand that. I like a lot of Priest, but they make my list for one reason: the string of albums from 1976-1978, which had many proggy elements, especially Sad Wings of Destiny. Also, it was really hard to get this down to 12. So many that barely missed out and on another day might not: the Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, and Van Morrison just to name a few.

As I am still basking in the first flush of glorious newbyism, I've gotta respond to this one, if I may. I cannot be as scientific as you, so my list would be based on bands I have continually gone back to since I first heard them, and still do. I shall start by borrowing The Stones, The Who, Zeppelin, Tull & Genesis from your list to begin mine. Then add the Beatles & Hendrix, that's seven. Zappa & Fairport Convention/Richard Thompson top my list, along with Robert Fripp & all things Crimson. Possibly the only three artists that I can outnumber you on number of albums owned (oh, add around 1000 live FZ shows to the released stuff). That's ten. And the two 'outsiders', both because they are two of the most soulful rock singers ever to come out of the U.K. - Steve Marriott/Humble Pie & The Jess Roden Band (if unknown, start with 'In A Circle'). That makes twelve. Of that lot only the Beatles & Hendrix - yeah, it would be those two, wouldn't it - I never got to see live - and Hendrix played, more than once, in a south London pub called the Star very close to where I lived, but I was just a couple of years too young, and didn't find out how close he'd been till some years later. Honourable mentions: John Sebastian, Joni, Spirit (Mercury years), Neil Young, Nick Cave, Nick Drake (how many people do you know who were buying Nick Drake albums while he was still alive? I promise you that I did), Yes (up to the awful Relayer) & The Waterboys (again, seen them many times. Of the rest of those, I never saw Spirit (Or did I? Oh dear.) nor Nick Drake live, but he hardly ever performed live and I don't think there is any film of a live performance. None yet discovered, anyway). Honourable 21st Century (primarily) mentions: Sufjan Stevens, Drive by Truckers/Patterson Hood, Jason Molina, Will Johnson (none British, interestingly. Or not). And I've seen that lot too, apart from the late great Jason Molina, whom I discovered just too late. And although they don't have a mention here, I did buy Pilgrimage very close to the day of release (one of the first ten albums in my collection), saw them a few times back then, and most recently at Fairport's festival a few years back (The Waterboys have also played there twice in the last 15 years). Anyway, that's my very loose list, with various sidenotes, apart from all the ones I've missed out! Lol!
Martin - this is awesome. I had to show my family your opening line. Best opening line ever! lol. I've become a big Waterboys fan the last decade plus - gotta see them live someday. You saw Wishbone Ash at the beginining - Pilgrimage era - very cool, though I think they got better and better - Argus of course. I didn't realize The Fairport festivals had such "name" acts playing with them - really cool. A fan of Nick Drake but like EVERYONE BUT YOU (lol), discovered him decades after he passed away. He was barely playing small clubs in his heyday (I read his book - amazing), so you really were on top of your game and still are - wow. Now for Zappa - I currently own 18 Zappa albums, and for me it's pretty much more than enough. My biggest collection is The Stones at 434 albums as of today - and you have over 1,000 Zappa live shows + - I'm speechless. I like Zappa, but also have issues with him to an extent - maybe one day I'll do a video. I've read books on him and by him - I can't totally get my arms around him. I never heard of Jess Roden until a viewer suggested I check him out. I bought his album Blowin' on vinyl and I was blown away. it was actually last year. I'm on the lookout for more when out in the wild. Will now look for In A Circle. Well my friend have a great weekend and thanks for contributing to my little channel and expanding my horizons. Lol! Most kind. I rather like words. As you may have gathered. Just for the record, other bands that have appeared at Fairport's Cropredy Convention (full festival name), to give you a flavour: We'll start with Robert Plant again, who has appeared three times over the years that I can remember, apart from when he's there as a fan, once featuring a short Zeppelin set with Fairport as his backing band (Misty Mountain Hop, Thank You, 29 Palms, If I Were a Carpenter, Girl From the North Country, Jesus On the Mainline, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Whole Lotta Love (yes, really!) & You Shook Me). And in 2008 Robert & Fairport with Kristina Donahue performed The Battle of Evermore as a Sandy Denny tribute - correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe Zeppelin ever played it live, so you can imagine how that went down that particular evening. Amazing!. You'll find the performance on You Tube. Little Feat, another favourite band of mine from the '70s (they were at Charlton '76 on the Who bill, of course), played a huge Cropredy set the day after drummer Richie Hayward died - I thought they might pull out, but man, they played for Richie. Alice Cooper even played ten years ago and said it was the best European crowd he had ever played to (bet he says that to all the boys). We had Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and the rest of them a couple of years ago (for what it's worth), and even one of my 'heroes', Robert Fripp, played there last year along with his missus Toyah Willcox. It has never been a folk festival, although there will always be a folk rock element, but there will also always be up-and-coming bands that Fairport personally invite - the festival has no sponsorship, quite deliberately - the day they make a loss is the day it finishes - one stage only (fringe bands in the two local pubs in the nearby village) - these days Fairport always begin the festival on Thursday afternoon with a short acoustic set, and end the whole thing on Saturday with a three hour extravaganza plus special guests (often, as this year, kept quiet. No idea who the 'Special Guest' they are advertising might be, but I just have a strange feeling about Ray Davies - bet I'm wrong, though, but that would be something else. Never seen the Kinks). We shall see in August. And it's the only festival I have ever bothered with after I turned up at the Glastonbury festival in 1979 and they actually charged us to get in!! Yep, I went in 1978 when it was a free show. 2024 prices are £360 to see Dua Lupa & Coldplay. Hmmm. Btw, there is a live version of the Jess Roden song I mentioned (In A Circle) on the Blowin' album you now own. Maybe we'll discuss him further at some point, because I first saw him live (with a band called Bronco whose guitarist was Kevin Gammond who later played with, yep, Robert Plant, and whose first album featured backing vocals by Trevor Lucas, who later joined Fairport - oh, I love the way everything links if you dig deep enough. Well, not everything, but I'm sure you know what I mean) in 1970 at a lunchtime gig that we attended during the hour that we had for lunch, 'cos we were all still at school and had to get back for afternoon lessons!! About ten of us turned up in our smart school uniforms fifteen minutes late, and all left fifteen minutes before the show ended to get back to school It must have looked quite odd! Ha! Apologies for taking up so much of your time. But I'm enjoying myself.......

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Cropredy started in '79 as a single day farewell Fairport show, 1980 was a single day one-off reunion, 1981 was a 'let's do this again' kind of show, which soon became a 'we could do this every year' which led to Fairport starting to tour again, by the 90s it was a two day festival, and in around 2000 became a three day event. 20,000 maximum number of people (plenty of Americans do come over, I assure you), and i believe I have been to twenty six of them over the years,; last one i missed was 1999. Some of the albums are under pressure. For example, my favourite Floyd album can switch with The Dark Side Of The Moon at any time and there are four albums fighting to be my number one by The Stones, and The Brussels Affair is currently tied with Sticky Fingers. I play the Roxy Music Greatest Hits from 1977 more than Country Life, but it seemed to be cheating to include compilations.
The only artist that is new to me over the last ten years is Jackie Leven, the Scottish singer songwriter, and most of these artists have been with me since I was 15.

I missed you Paul - missed your analysis as as good as my database numbers are - yours are in another league. Fantastic selections - Station To Station is a favorite and A Trick Of The Tail is my #2 Genesis all time fave. What is it with Roxy Music and me - I try but just think they're OK. BUT Country Life is possibly my favorite album cover ever - it's way up there...lol. I don't have that Richard Thompson album - gotta look for that in the wild. Lastly I don't know who Jackie Leven is Scottish Singer Songwriter - will have to research - thanks so much as always. I agree nice to see the great Al Stewart up there.
what, no Bananarama? Funny bout Tunnel of Love that was my gateway to becoming a Springsteen fan (albeit a kinda casual one.)

Oh that juggling is going to be the death of me.
But that algorithm! Have you offered it to Google? Or MIT? It certainly spews out some fine results, and I have to wonder at the investment you put into developing it. 400+ albums for The Stones. 50-60 albums for most bands. That is a true devotion to science.

Thanks so much. I wrote those programs myself in a program called Filemaker back in the day. Would have no idea how to program it now. I just keep sticking in the data when an album makes it from my backlog into the database / shelves. Thanks so much.
I see that lots of TH-cam musicologists are following your lead in logging their passions, except that they are mostly focusing on what they are listening to rather than what they own.
I find the lifelong commitment of you guys fascinating. It's sort of "anoraky," as we say in the UK, but at least it's about something really interesting rather than trains or stamps.
While I lived in Europe, I think I had 500-750 LPs and CDs (mostly LPs, given my generation), and I was someone who took rock music much more seriously than most people I knew. Some of my friends went a mile further, and they were all Led Zep fans - thus my constant sneering at that overgrown boy band, Led Zeppelin.
But you are me x10 in terms of a collection, plus you devote countless hours a week to producing TH-cam shows. It's kinda breathtaking. And magnificent. But is it sane?
Well, it's certainly beneficial to the likes of me in our thousands and tens of thousands, a celebration mostly of our youths and of our joy in the music we were and are dedicated to.
The trouble is that I now want a focus to be placed on the bands and artists of my youth who are rarely talked about - Traffic, Family, Colisseum, Kevin Coyne, Sutherland Brothers + Quiver, Arthur Brown & Kingdom Come, The Edgar Broughton Band, Curved Air, Joan Armatrading - not the obscure bands I never heard of, but the obscure bands I personally loved.
But where is the gain in that? Who is going to listen to your show discussing the musical stylings of Wally (I think they were Finnish)? Or the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (all too British)?
In the meantime, I really enjoy your take on the great bands we have all heard of and watching your without-a-net juggling act. It's a great musical circus and passes many happy hours.
@@timhewtson6212 thanks for your amazingly kind comments. I absolutely love them and brought a smile on my face. I do try to go deep once in a while. I just did a video on manic street preachers which nobody’s watching. Lol I don’t do videos to get big numbers because honestly my channel is small and I don’t get big numbers Relative to most other channels. But my channel is always genuine truthful, and always about what I physically own and know. And also showing my collecting habit that started in 1973 and I’ve been documenting ever since. So it’s genuine and real. Hopefully that makes me stand out a bit from the crowd. Clearly, there is some very big channels where they just show pictures and getting information from Wikipedia and yet they’re really big channels. I don’t even know if they own any CDs or records. Anyway, thank you for your amazing comments and support. It really means so much to me.
