  • I finished Martin Popoff's book "Satisfaction - 10 Albums That Changed My Life" which shows the selections of 82 Rock Stars. Instead of simply reviewing the book, I thought it would be more fun to tabulate the results and compare them to my results. And you can also compare them to your personal results. Enjoy this fine Martin Popoff book and my tabulated results.

    Deep Purple In Rock got me into them. Top 5 band for me.
    Hendrix started me too but the three albums that changed me the most when I was 12/13 in 1970 were Led Zeppelin II, Black Sabbath Paranoid and The Who Live at Leeds

      I'm not sure how Deep Purple In Rock passed me by. I'm not a huge Purple fan but I have a bunch - don't listen to them too much though. Funny in that Uriah Heep was always considered a poor man's Purple, but I listed to Heep way more. I am a big Ritchie Blackmore fan though.

    Surprisingly Rolling Stones #1, in stead of any album of Big Four. However The Stones took general third position with 25 votes. No wonder that The Stones have long history and so many albums that covered several generations each of which has its own favourite Stones album.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was shocked that the most chosen Stones album by far was their debut. It is a great debut for its time of course, but I would've suspected the usual ones - Exile, Sticky Fingers etc. They did make a small appearance but not too many. But I guess it was albums that changed their life / influenced. Even so, was surprising to me too.

    I like your list better, Alan. No Beach Boys, no Beatles, and the Pretenders' debut! You have three of my top four albums on your list, the aforementioned Pretenders, Physical Graffiit and Quadrophenia. The only one missing is Station to Station, but you have another Bowie album on there, so all is forgiven.

    Thanks again Alan, for another great video. I've always thought that "Are You Experienced" is one of the greatest albums in rock history. I have several Hendrix CDs and "Experienced" is the first one I bought about 25 years ago. Love the album and it certainly deserves the number one position. Hope you enjoyed the Stones concert.

  • @timhewtson6212

    OK, statistically-speaking, there actually wasn't much agreement at the album level. You didn't mention how many chose Jimi Hendrix's 'Are you experienced?' but No. 2 came in at a 20% agreement. The bottom five or so only had a 6% agreement.
    When you rolled it up to the group level, the picture became much clearer, especially when you take Martin Popoff's primary musical preference into account - Metal.
    That The Beatles featured so strongly is interesting; and indeed The Stones - these are not heavy metal bands. That Black Sabbath did not feature at all (from memory) is extraordinary, given that they endlessly feature on Martin Popoff's and Pete Pardo's lists for Sea of Tranquility.
    I couldn't see the list of the 80 in the survey, but given that Martin Popoff's preferences skew Metal, where were Uriah Heep, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest et al? And given Martin Popoff's over skew - Prog - where were any Prog bands?
    If you do a statistical expectations vs. actuality analysis, i.e. Chi Squared, all these people who skew, I assume, Metal and Prog, actually picked Rock N Roll and Blues as their primary influences.
    Now, that is somewhat unexpected, except in the case of Led Zeppelin, being a hard core Metal Blues band.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was interesting - Hendrix Are You Experienced got 27 votes at #1, Sgt. Peppers at #2 got 16 votes. Sabbath was lower on the list - Paranoid got a few. Priest got a few - Unleashed most of those. There's was about 800 albums chosen so I sorted and deleted, sorted and deleted to make sense of it. Took a lot of work actually. Stones was odd - most were for the debut album. But it was favorite albums that changed your life / influential so I guess that's why. Overall was a fun thing to do.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow it's kind of like the albums you've listened to the most. This list is the albums that most effected my guitar playing and song arrangement (I'm not going to say songwriter - I'm not going to call myself a songwriter). Hendrix more for arrangement. I consider the greatest loss with Hendrix to be his song creation with the guitar. The rest are straight up the albums that I played the guitar to the most. Working Man off of RUSH's first album was basically a continuation of the lead work of Iommi and I loved the groove and guitar work on RUSH.

    Leave it to Alan Rosenberg to create such a unique video! Whereas the prolific Martin Popoff chose not to end his “Satisfaction…” book with any kind of tabulated roundup to put the rock star votes in perspective, you, Alan, rolled up your sleeves and dove deep into arranging all the data for a solid basis of comparison. In picking up and running with the ball that Mr. Popoff dropped, you embarked on a journey of hard, time-consuming and meticulous work that I, for one, greatly appreciate. I am very surprised that not a single one of the 82 rock stars featured in the book voted for a Bob Dylan album. Though my votes don’t match all of theirs, I understand how the albums they selected can change lives, if you will. “Are You Experienced?” has almost always been ranked as, or close to, number 1 in album polls ever since it was released in 1967. The first time I heard that album I wasn’t even an adolescent yet. It blew me away. I was motionless and silent after the album ended. I still play it on Sundays, when the music I play at home falls under the category of what I call my “Sunday Sixties Sessions.” The album still leaves me almost breathless.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really was a lot of work, so thanks for your compliments. Are You Experienced is certainly my favorite Hendrix album. I was only four when it came out, so of course, I can't totally appreciate it's impact. But even today, as you said, it sounds incredible and ground breaking. With that said, I don't listen to Hendrix all that much, so for me I was surprised it landed at #1. I love your "personal radio" - Sunday Sixties Sessions - that's a great title and idea. Thanks as always.

    Thanks Alan for the review, and the stunning annotation! I certainly would never invest the time and energy to compile all of that info in index form--good grief! And yes, I don't know why an author of his 'heft' wouldn't have done that, just as a reference feature. As for the content, well, I guess it is interesting to read what other musicians of note have been inspired by...but like a reviewer below commented, the moniker of 'changed my life' seems to get bantered about with everything: "movies that have changed my life"; "albums that changed my life"; "tv shows that changed my life"; "restaurants that changed my life"; "pole dancers that changed my life"; ...and I certainly don't want to be contrarian with a subject that has been very special in my life, but yes, one wonders how did that album change how you are actually living your life? I mean, did your life actually take a different path thanks to that album? Perhaps it did--but did the path change, say, 13 times...or 12 or 10??? Yes, if your frame of mind changes and inspires you to think differently, inevitably your behavior and future choices could be effected...I guess. But I am not qualified to make that determination on human behavior, or the human psyche.
    As for me, I am confident that there has been music that has changed my life--notably when I discovered the Hot Rocks album, and personally bought "Made in the Shade"--not only did that set off an obsession that continues to this day, but much of my activities--reading, writing, learning, practicing and taking guitar lessons--all started after that. Of course I became obsessed with music, and the Rolling Stones, in particular.
    Later, in high school, after hearing Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, I became almost obsessed with writing, lyrics and poetry. I never heard anybody use language like that, and I think that took my life, work, studies, in another, almost literary direction.
    Finally, while in college, I heard John Coltrane's My Favorite Things and Impressions, and that made me want to play and learn jazz. And I spent years, well into my adulthood, learning, playing and practicing jazz music.
    Can't wait for your Stones review! And please tell me you didn't wear that Ringo/Pepper shirt to the Stones concert 🤮

      Thanks - you nailed it - there you listed and described perfectly "albums that changed your life" and I loved it. By the way, I agree with you. Beyond really the Stones, Kinks, Who, I don't know if any really changed my life - my musical listening life - put me on massive pursuit to gobble up everything by the artist etc..and became part of my musical DNA - how's that? How I feel. by the way, I picked up Coltrane's My Favorite Things fairly recently - last year maybe? I loved it. I'm getting more and more into jazz and loving much of Coltrane. and no..lol Ringo at a Stones show...lol. I wore my vintage 1999 Stones No Security tour shirt and got a ton of comments. People had never seen it before. Was a lot of fun. Thanks so much.

    Certain records were listened to at critical points in my life. Take free heartbreaker. Listened and bonded in 1973 a pivotal year for my fortunes. Heartbreaker more a Paul Rodgers solo and a low point in his life and fortunes prior badco. Well sir,things really lucked up for me, mid 73. Turning point and this lp was purchased and listened to as was framptons camel. Argud. Family's bandstand and most important. Heads hands and feet tracks .flawless masterpieces that lifted my spirits like a tide as I hung ten to better times

      So true. Part of what makes music wonderful. It's a totally personal experience. Especially when we are going thru situations in life - that music bonds to us. I'll never forget when we put our first dog to sleep back in 1980. When we got back in the car the song Misunderstanding by Genesis came on the radio. To this day, I turn it off instantly. But of course the opposite is true as well. By the way Heartbreaker is near the top of my favorite Free albums. I know the band was in shambles but it's a wonderful album. Anyway Spence thanks for sharing. And by the way, that is why I listen to "new" albums at least four or five times. Because albums effect us by our mood and vice versa. There's been so many occasions, wnen I played an album and didn't really care for it. Only to later on fall in love with it, and in some cases become an all time favorite. If I heard it only once or twice, I would've missed out. Thanks again.
