  • The Rolling Stones played their 4th show of their current Hackney Diamonds tour last night in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium. Seems to me, as in the past, they upped their game in Vegas - because it looked like a smoking hot performance from The Stones. Here's my review.

    Thanks for your great review! I was at the Vegas show in Pit A. The energy was amazing! Mick said that the Vegas crowd was the rowdiest so far, though maybe he says that at all the shows.😂We were pretty rowdy, though! I loved the songs off Hackney Diamonds. The video to Angry was a lot of fun. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is just a piece of art and it was a joy to see it performed live. Kept thinking Lady Gaga might join them (it was Vegas, after all) but no go. Chanel Haynes does the song justice, for sure! Always great to see the tried and true songs done live, especially my favorite, Gimme Shelter. In all, a top notch show!

    Keith pulled off probably his cleanest performance of “Honky Tonk Woman” in years. Not to mention nailing his “Start Me Up” intro, and the vocals on his set. I think he is getting stronger with every show, this shows us he can still do it. I watched a few videos with some nice close up shots of him playing, you can really see that he’s trying to concentrate on getting his parts right, each move seems very deliberate. He may be realizing he can’t quite do the war horses on autopilot anymore. Hopefully the sound guys figure out how to properly mix his guitar again though.

    A setlist for The Rolling Stones is almost impossible. It’s 60 years of brilliance - and there are the studio versus live versions. I love the live version of Out of Control (’98) more than the studio version - same with Midnight Rambler. Shattered? ’81 vs. studio… Can’t pick.
    : )
    My favourite live version of the band is ’81… Alan, I can’t believe you’ve seen them, ’75 and onwards. Blessed.
    It’s tempting to judge performances online, but it’s a mistake - especially with the Stones. Phones can’t capture energy, spirit and feel. The Stones play live. They’ve always played live and seem to have become stricter about NOT using pre-recorded sounds. Great.
    The Stones are not as good as they once were. They can’t be.
    Stu, Bill and Charlie are no longer in the mix, but they are STILL GREAT in 2024 and that greatness is a testament to the Stones greatness.

    Like you, Alan, I was getting my feedback from cell phone videos, and I totaly agreed with your last video about the concerns you had from what we'd seen so far. Like you, I was sad to see "Out of Time" dropped (and still not back in Vegas). I was at one of the Hyde Park concerts in 2022 and this song was a highlight for the reasons you explained in that previous video. I wish they would bring it back, like "Rocks Off", wonderful surprise for the tour opener. I still had concerns about Keith's health and his ability to keep up, but Vegas was a net improvement. I will say, with what Keith has provided to the Stones (and rock and roll) over the years, I will always cut him plenty of slack. Like you, I don't care that he sits down for the start of "Gimme Shelter" if he feels this will help him get it right, and I don't care about some of the flubs we get every now and then. He's there, and if he feels he can still bring it, that's what matters, and in Vegas he definitely did bring it. I will be at the July 5th show in Vancouver. Just like you, I saw them for the first time in 1975, and then 14 more shows since then over the course of all their subsequent tours. Vancouver will be my 16th Stones concert. The 2022 London Hyde Park show I referenced was me treating myself to a special trip to see them at least once in their home town, and it was worth it, an absolute highlight. Like you, the Rolling Stones are such an integral part of my life, in my DNA as you said.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Thank you, Alan, for your kind response. Just a follow-up on that Hyde Park concert I saw. The date of the concert was July 3rd, 2022, 53 years exactly after the death of Brian in 1969. The Stones' first Hyde park concert was on July 5th, 1969, 2 days after Brian died. As we know, the concert back then was for the Stones to get their performance chops back and to introduce the fans to Mick Taylor. But then, with Brian's passing just 2 days earlier, the concert became a tribute to Brian. As I stood there in Hyde Park on July 3rd, 2022, pondering all this, it seemed to me a perfect occasion for Mick and Keith to simply make a mention of Brian, maybe even dedicate a song to him; they did play Paint It Black which we know Brian contributed heavily on. Of course, this was very wishful thinking on my part as no mention was ever made. Charlie was noted in the show's introduction as he was for every concert on this tour, very rightly so (and also very touching), but nothing on Brian in spite of the anniversary. I don't know how many fans in attendance that day were aware of the date and venue coincidence with Brian's passing, probably a minority, but Mick was mum on this. It was a great show anyway, an incredible personal experience for me in London. Thanks, again, Alan.

      @@michael1415 Great memory for you and thanks for sharing. I don't know for sure - but certainly that tour you saw was difficult and in memory of Charlie. Although amazing that it was exactly 40 years after Brian's death. I think when they first returned to Hyde Park in 2013 - that was historic. They released Sweet Summer Sun Hyde Park Live and the deluxe edition included the long lost original Hyde Park film so perhaps they felt they didn't need to do it again ....don't know for sure...but nevertheless, they certainly could have mentioned Brian for sure.

    Hello Alan, great comments and review...I personally do not go out of my way to watch the constant stream of cell phone videos that pop up, only because they often have an arbitrary quality to them that, by it's nature, usually strikes me as unfulfilling, but the couple that I did watch from Vegas do sound very sharp. Sometimes, I find myself wishing that they would play the songs more as a five piece band, rather than trying to copy, almost nuance for nuance, the arrangement of the original recording. Like, say the 1981 tour, when they opened with Under My Thumb--the signature opening riff (I'm assuming Brian's marimba) was played by Keith as a lead guitar lick; similarly, Let's Spend the Night was played with a guitar riff playing the piano part, as opposed to now, they just have Chuck play the piano as an intro...and as for Gimme Shelter, think back to the 72-73 tours, where Keith would arpeggiate the intro and Mick Taylor would mimic the vocal line with a wailing lead guitar--rather than having a singer voice that haunting melody...it gave the tunes a much tougher, hard rock feel. Given the physical issues that are inevitable factoring into their performances, maybe playing all of those parts on guitar are just too difficult--it does require a lot of musicianship. And yes, has their been a more ignored No. 1 single in their canon than Off my Cloud? I welcome hearing it now...wish they would give 19th Nervous Breakdown more stage life as well--another forgotten pop classic.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for your amazing comments. Of course as you know, when they returned for Steel Wheels, it was a radical new sound, with the larger band, backup singers and a total professionalism and tightness like never before. I certainly don’t think the current state of the guitars could handle how the used to do it. And I love the tighter sound as well. As much as I love Gimme Shelter from the Taylor era, and I do, nothing beats those Lisa Fischer era versions. Was like levitating. Just my thought. The Stones sound so different from tour to tour which makes collecting their live music so much fun. What I miss is a really great lead guitar player but that’s another story of course.

    • @anthonyaswe4174
      @anthonyaswe4174 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Yeah...Steel Wheels was the beginning of them having the caravan of backing musicians and singers, not always to great effect, in my opinion, and the ginormous set pieces...I always preferred the leaner, cruder version of the band, but that obviously isn't practical anymore, with only three 'legit' band members remaining, and octogenarian status to 2 of the 3. Actually, I'm not sure they really could've done that kind of show by the time of Voodoo Lounge...maybe, but I guess we'll never know. When you do hear the four of them in rehearsals, or on studio bootlegs, it still astounded me, even in the later years, how well they still played together. And, of course, those lucky enough to see the club or theater shows can attest to that.
      Also, with you mentioning that you're a native Long Islander, you may be as good a source to ask this inquiry as anyone: why have the Stones never played the Nassau Coliseum? I mean, the Garden was basically as close as they would get to a 'home' venue, but given their deep connection to NY, why did they never play there, especially since it was a mainstay for countless rock and pop artists, as you know. I mean, I used to think maybe it had to do with the Stones playing to more of an "urban" crowd, and Long Island being too "suburban" for their audience--yet they played places like the Prudential Center, Brendan Byrne Arena, et all...any idea? I mean, seating capacity is similar to the Garden, no?

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@anthonyaswe4174 Thanks - that's such an awesome question and it's been one I've been pondering for decades. The Nassau Coliseum was probably my main venue in the 70's and 80's. The seating capacity was slightly smaller than the Garden but still close - 16000 at the Coliseum. And EVERY act that played the Garden played the Coliseum, usually on the same exact tour - couple of nights at the Garden and a couple of nights at the Coliseum. Was fantastic, and back in those days, we were able to get tickets from Ticketmaster - at Macy's or at the box office. But yea, The Stones were always the one act that stood out that never played the Coliseum, except the Steel Wheels rehearsal was at The Coliseum. They set up the whole stage inside - deep security - I had no idea, nor did many until after the fact. I guess the Coliseum never had the cache of the Garden, deservedly so, but yet that's not really true since everyone played it....well except The Stones. So I don't know why....weird.

    I can't remember the date of the last Rolling Stones show I saw - it may have been 10 or 15 years ago - but it was riveting. Mick was storming around continuously, making it all look like just what he wanted to do. Ronnie and Keith were grinning throughout, Keith playing guitar in gunslinger mode. And there was Charlie Watts at the back, flawless and unobtrusive.
    I haven't seen the entire Vegas show, but it was quite a contrast.
    Mick was still prancing around in his usual manner, but if you looked at his face, it seemed an effort this time. Ronnie was much the same, but Keith was rigid and even looked frightened at times. I know he has arthritis nowadays and has to play differently.
    The songs were great, of course, and 'Angry' fit right in there. The last time I saw them, I realized that their more recent songs are specifically designed to play live. This time, so far the songs have mostly been oldies.
    That they are putting on an energetic show at all at the age of 80 is an amazing thing. Kudos! But I have my doubts as to whether there will be another one. Catch them now, if you have a spare $1,000 each, or else.

    I felt the heat of The Stones’ concert in Vegas via great cell phone footage. So, I can imagine the intensity of the fire that the band set in Allegiant Stadium. You did a great job of covering (and commenting on) the show. With the exception of Mick, who always seems to bring his A game to every venue he is in, the rest of the band really stepped up their previous performances when they got on stage in Sin City. Did Ronnie take more Vitamin B than he did in Houston, NOLA and Glendale, Arizona? Did Keith’s headband emit an elixir through the skin on his forehead? No matter what caused the boost, I hope it’s here to stay for the rest of the tour. It would be great (IMHO) if “Like A Rolling Stone” was put on every setlist, as it’s always a high point whenever The Stones play it. “Miss You” is not one of my favorite Stones’ songs, but, as you said, it’s known to be exceptional when played in concert. I think the version played at Allegiant Stadium was among the best I’ve seen live, and I’ve seen the song played a helluva lot. I loved when Mick took the song to the next level with his awesome harp playing. The bass and sax solos were a special treat. Keith must be feeling better, now that he’s doing his usual lead vocals on two songs. I was excited that he started out with “Little T & A,” one of his most fun songs (IMHO). Adding “You Got the Silver” makes me happy, as it’s an old favorite of mine. I’m glad that he didn’t play “Tell Me Straight” because I think it would have gotten lost in a stadium setting, though I do like the song. The kick-ass performances of and enthusiastic audience reactions to both “Mess It Up” and “ Whole Wide World” tell me that both songs belong on the setlists. To keep them both in the shows, I’d be fine with moving the oh so Stonesy “Angry” - with its practically tailor-made opening riff - to the position of lead-off concert track. (To me, “Start Me Up” has been used way too many times to kick off concerts. Of course, its title and lyrics make it a given. But I think its obviousness and predictability should have been given a rest for this tour.) If that happened, then at least one third of the excellent “Hackney Diamonds” would be deservedly represented. Like you, Alan, I think that “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” is a showstopper that earns its place as an encore number. It was a bold move by The Stones to play a great new song as the first encore, and it would be an equally bold move to play another great new song (e.g. “Angry”) as a concert opener. It wouldn’t be boldness at the expense of quality because both songs are top notch, and, more importantly, both have been embraced by fans - as shown by the footage that I, at least, have seen. The majority of songs played at each concert will still be the warhorses that have been ingrained in countless brains around the world. That’s just my way of looking at this latest age-defying tour by my favorite rock ‘n’ roll band.

      Thanks as always. I agree that Angry would definitely work as an opener. I think it sounds really good live, though some others don't think so. I've only seen cell phone video, but it sounds great to my ears. Want balls - how about opening with Brown Sugar, which they opened the '72 tour with...lol. That won't happen lol. Side topic but sort of related to my previous setlist rant. David Gilmour announced a new tour - well select dates anyway for his upcoming album. Whenever he plays live, he plays the whole, or virtually his whole new album. This new tour, he has stated in advance that he will not play any Waters era Floyd. So he will only play his solo material and possibly the two Floyd albums he led. Are his fans complaining - will they not go....hmmm I tried to get tickets - he has instantly sold out FOUR shows at Madison Square Garden. Some artists and their fans....well they look forward to hearing new material and have no issue without hearing ANY classics....

      With all the numerous responses in the comments section for each of your videos, you may not recall my pitch for “Brown Sugar” to be the “Hackney Diamonds” tour opener. It’s included in my response to your initial video on the Houston show. The Stones have been my #1 rock ‘n’ roll band since I first discovered them when I was in single digits. I have seen them at least once, and oftentimes more than once, on every tour since 1975. While some eras have been better than others for The Stones (as is the case for all bands), my fandom has been steadfast. However, I will never forgive Mick Jagger (whom I believe is the best frontman ever) for canceling “Brown Sugar” because of anticipated misconceptions. Instead of setting the record straight (no pun intended), Mick, being the Sir that he is, played it safe by not rocking the smooth-sailing boat he’s been on for a very long time. “Brown Sugar” is killer on every level. Even Keith Richards said (to paraphrase, here) he can’t understand how it is not obvious to everyone that “Brown Sugar” is about the horrors of slavery. Geez, nobody but Lynyrd Skynyrd (of course) has ever - to my knowledge, anyway - objected to Neil Young’s “Southern Man.” Neil’s lyrics for that song include: “I heard screamin’ and bullwhips cracking.” Mick’s lyrics for “Brown Sugar” include: “Hear him whip the women just around midnight.” Does anyone notice any similarities? How can anyone think that these words CONDONE slavery? Can it be any clearer that these lyrics DESCRIBE a horrible occurrence that undisputedly took place in America? In a previous video, you included Neil Young among the artists who don’t kowtow when it comes to his setlists, or, for that matter, anything else regarding his music. You also mentioned that he, among others like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Grateful Dead and Phish, play what they want, how they want. And still, they sell out concerts and the fans don’t grumble about which songs made the cut and which didn’t. The fans are happy to hear what they hear from artists they love and appreciate. Why should the majority of Stones fans be any different? Maybe, they wouldn’t be if Mick didn’t sell them short. I’d love to see him grow a pair, put his ego in check, and replace many of the warhorses with new songs and deep cuts. Then, he would be giving the fans credit by enabling them to appreciate what’s below the surface - like the aforementioned artists do. Knowing that “Brown Sugar” won’t be brought back by Mick, my second choice for the tour’s lead-off song is “Angry.” As for David Gilmour, I had read that he added a fourth Garden show, because of popular demand, which also sold out as quick as lightning flashes. Good on him for trusting his fans to be open to and appreciative of his new material and earlier music for which he is the driving force. He is an artist who believes in himself and his fans. Clearly, those beliefs have paid off in terms of ticket sales. I’m happy for him and his fans, of which I am one. When I saw Floyd’s concert at the Garden to promote the “Animals” album, his solos were so great that even all the awesome special effects couldn’t distract from his playing. Maybe, you’ll eventually score tickets to a Gilmour show as the dates get closer. I hope you do.

      @@ronalaurence4105 Thanks as always - covering a lot of ground here. The Stones are one of the only major artists who haven't pulled "the last tour - farewell" card and I respect them so much for that. If they pulled that card - would be a bigger selling tour for bigger ticket pricing. So we don't know if this is their finale. But my heart says, the obvious, can they keep doing this and that seems kind of doubtful. If this is in fact their finale, could have been cool to play arena's and go full our balls to the wall, and say fuck it, we're playing what we want for the final time - and yea - opening up with Brown Sugar - that's a statement the old Rolling Stones would've made. Follow that with Star Star - I'm a happy man. But who knows. But yea 20 years of kow towing to their casual fan lowest common denominator greatest hits over and over again....it's a shame. David Gilmour is a great example - so far four quick sellouts at Madison Square Garden and he's saying upfront he's not gonna play any Waters' era Floyd. And I'd be thrilled with that - give me Gilmours solo career with some Division Bell / Momentary Lapse material - end of the night no ones gonna miss Wish You Were Here. The Stones' could've been like that if they went a different direction a long time ago, like Springsteen, U2, Dylan, Neil Young and others....

    I really enjoy your reviews of the concerts, even though you're not there in person. "You Got the Silver' is a great song. Was Keith playing? I saw an older video where Keith just sang and Ron played guitar. During the 'Sympathy for the Devil' performance, did Mick sing the verse about the Kennedys. In the past, that verse is usually dropped, though it does make an appearance once in a great while. I would prefer if they bring back 'All Down the Line' instead of 'Tumbling Dice'. To each his own. Did Mick sing the 3rd verse of 'Honky Tonk Women' or did he sing the version from the single?

      I didn't watch the Honky Tonk or Sympathy videos from Vegas - no desire to. Those warhorses are played to death so didn't watch them. Keith was playing acoustic on You Got The Silver as was Ronnie - Ronnie was playing slide - it was really nice. Love that song. I don't think the Stones have never done Tumbling Dice on tour since 1972 when it came out. Certainly a definitive Stones track. Also love All Down The Line of course. Counting Crows were a cool opener for the Stones but I saw them open on the Voodoo Lounge tour in 1994. I don't remember them opening on the Bridges Tour. I think you saw the Voodoo Lounge tour. I've only seen a few video clips because I'm seeing them on Wednesday and I want my mind to be clear of visual and audio judgment. The only thing i would change so far on the set list is replacing You Can't Always Get What You Want and putting Sweet Sounds Of Heaven in it's place and putting another rocker in the encore slot, which one, I don't know. Suprise me!

    wow that was fast! and yes! it was a good, not great, not mind blowing but a good rock n roll show and performance overall, my worries and concerns prior to this show were very high considering how mick looked tired on the first show and Keith was still recovering from the flu and covid and he seemed kinda out of it really did have me feeling concerned, but low and behold they proved me wrong AGAIN! and we actually got 19 songs! with Keith doing “you got the silver” and “little t&a” and he actually sounded and looked fresh, energized and into it, I’ve never ever seen Keith so on fire! it was so crazy man! I mean when I first saw them in Dallas, Keith engaged with the audience and looked and seemed into it, especially during “jumpin’ jack flash” he was on fire, but due to the cold weather and rain on the Dallas show Keith’s guitar performance in the beginning were kinda mid, and last nights performance of JJF didn’t compare to the one in Dallas, it was just me tho, and ofc Mick is on fire as always, he seemed into it as well, and Ronnie did too, although his solo on “you can’t always get what you want” wasn’t that good, and I prefer his solo in Dallas, and I was very very bummed to not hear “out of time” or “all down the line” they really did lose me there, I was highly disappointed but Keith got me back into it with his two song performance, but overall it was a good show Alan, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, the setlist was good and I had a good time, but with that out of the way, idk if it was just me but the sound was absolutely horrible in Allegiant stadium, idk if it was the stadium itself or if it was the stones sound system but it was bad, and this is coming from a guy who was on the floor, I can’t imagine the sound for someone who’s at nosebleeds.
    edit: before anyone says something, I mean “good” very loosely and in the best way possible, it’s my second stones show and I was expectations were set very high and ig that was my fault and my experience with the sound quality was also flaw to the “good” word, but performance and show wise, it was absolutely amazing! The Stones can’t be beat in that department.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow just a follow up comment, bc I just got home yesterday and needed a few days to process the show, and with everything I said, I have come to the realization and now an appreciation for what kinda of a show, and admiration of what kind of a band, they are and a sense of respect for what the Stones are, all the past and now present, they definitely are the quintessential and definition of rock and roll and musical longevity, they’ve set and continue to set the example and standard to all the bands before and now after them, and I found them at a time when I needed new music and boy am I glad I did, but what really did make me love and respect the stones even more is the love and respect they have for themselves, the band, other bands and artists that came before and after them, and as much as everyone would like to say intentionally or not, they’ve NEVER EVER done a “farewell tour” like many bands before and after them have done, I’d rather pay huge money for the stones to play a normal tour than pay huge money for a tour tagline that’ll end up being a scam cash grab, and also they don’t play and refuse to play to backing tracks, they keep it 100% real, raw, authentic, rough around the edges rock and roll, and music in general, music, and it genuinely makes me upset that as much as me and countless of other people would love the stones to constantly tour, the show will have to eventually end, and in stones fashion, the last show will be unknown, so if the show in Vegas was my last stones show then it was one hell of a way to go out, and as of now, was the tightest I’ve seen them and many others as well as you have agreed.

But it can be long and since they're doing a tight play list, time wise, we can get 3 songs in for one Rambler. It could be musical as well. Perhaps, they fell they're just not up to it anymore.
