When I started hand engraving I discovered that it was difficult to find answers to even the most basic questions. I created this channel to try to fill in the gaps for the beginning engraver. I am by no means an expert and I’m still learning as well. Hopefully this can be a place for dialogue and conversation so everyone can contribute and make the process of learning to hand engrave a little less confusing.

Loved your episode on the podcast. Would also love to see a update in france
Thank you. I’m not there full time yet. I’m still waiting on the visa. Soon hopefully!
Gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
The best steel is from Japan, Germany, and the USA. You do beautiful work.
I agree. Thanks for your encouragement.
Beautifully done.
Thank you very much!
I took Rays engraving class. I learned so much. If you have any interest in engraving, Rays the guy you want to go to. I went to another engraving class a few years ago and did not learn a fraction of what Ray teaches. Ray is not only a great teacher, but a great human being. Thanks Ray!
Well said. I agree completely.
I've just tried several types of 304 stainless steel and what do you think is the hardness code for the stainless steel usually used for carving, for example for necklace pendants or knife handles.
304 is inherently difficult. I have cut it and it cut very well and then the very next project I was constantly resharpening. Stainless like all steel can vary in hardness so it helps to have a supplier who is consistent. When it comes to knife manufacturers, most are not exactly consistent so you just have to hope you get something that cuts.

Hello Justin, I want to try this DOT background technique. What size nib do you use on this dial? For a custom dial like this, do you use the original dial or cut it again? If the city makes its own dial, what thickness should it use in mm? thanks.
You will need to make your own dial. This video should help answer your question. th-cam.com/video/wmVvEiyEtgI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lb0dGtg2AFrZzreF
I would like to see the full process of scanning it into a ipad, drawing your pattern then the process of sizing it to fit the lighter and printing it. I'm new to engraving and even newer to using a ipad and procreate. Any help would be amazing. Btw,I love your TH-cam videos!
Great idea! Thanks for asking. I hope to do that soon.
That’s two simple but effective tips. Thanks! These tips really help new engravers to simplify the process.
Glad it was helpful!
Really nice option. Experience always keeps you in forefront of craftsmanship!
Yes it does!
Where do you get the stencils? Or whats your inspiration to hand draw? Tia

It’s violinist rosin. You can find it on Amazon. Buy the natural rosin.
I do leather tooling, what you're doing looks really difficult.
I admire leather tooling! Hand engraving is similar in design. It takes a lot of study and practice.
beautiful work. Thanks for sharing!

It’s an engravers ball vise. GRS has a wide selection of them.
Thank you for taking the time to teach. Please most definitely make more tutorials. Your explanations, as you work are most helpful. Especially pertaining to jewelry engraving.

What set up and hand piece are you using spring or no spring?
I use a Lindsay Classic. It’s pneumatic. I tried most of them and it’s my favorite so far.

Thanks for watching!
Great job. Whats the name of the drill machine?
It is a pneumatic engraver made by Steve Lindsay. It’s the foot controlled Lindsay Classic.
Hey Justin :) I'm going through all of Sams videos now. Thank you for this. Looks really nice!
Thanks. I love to watch them too. He’s incredible !
Just bought his dvd and it’s been really insightful. Just ordered a 120 graver for hand pushing. Any other graver angles would you recommend for hand pushing Justin? The flat has helped with my lettering.
Of you are sticking to softer metals then any geometry can work great. Keep in mind that a 90 will offer less resistance when pushing as there is less surface area in contact with the metal. Although a 120 will offer a little more character. I learned lettering with a flat and I love it.
120 appears to be creating as final effect a botchy finish which looks quite crowded overall. This reduces quality of this this type of cutting, although easier to create.
Hey Justin:) Thank you for this video. I'm having a hard time getting the image to metal. I'm ordering the pictorico and looking into a different printer. I'm pretty sure the solution is spot on but the ink just doesnt want to stick to the metal.
It can be tricky. This technique also works with thin even coat damar varnish. Before applying the transfer, allow the damar to dry enough where your finger « squeaks » when you drag it across the surface. Good luck!
@@voightengraving I’ll order that today. Thank you so much!!
