The Best Image Transfer Technique for Hand Engraving

  • A simple and effective technique for transfering images to metal work surfaces for hand engraving. I learned this technique in Ray Cover's beginning engraving class. If you have any questions please comment and I'll be happy to try to answer them.
*Note: Pigment based inks work best for this method. Also, using the « print with black ink only » setting is optimal when printing the final image to the transfer film.

Another great Vid Justin! A couple of other tips, you can tell which side of the Pictorico to print on by whetting your finger and touching the film. The print side will be sticky. Second thing, print using the 'black and white' setting on your inkjet and make sure your black cartridge is pigment based not dye based. Color cartridges are typically dye based and some black cartridges are dye and some are pigment. Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks Ralph! I didn’t know about wetting the finger. I’ll add the black and white info to the description. Thanks again.

I can't buy the pictorico here in germany. What "Transfer Film" here is stuff that is transparent but has a self adhesive side on the other, so its not the right thing to substitute the pictorico. What would you recommend, just transparent film for inkjet priting? I have mine right now and it is not matte one side, its clear from both. Its "overhead projector film", that seems to be the stuff closest to pictorico.

@@voightengraving so i finally got the pictorico and made my rosin solution and gave this a try and when i go to pull the print off after using my agate burnisher the rosin comes off the metal and sticks to the print and in some places is transfers successfully, would this be caused by just putting too much solution on possibly?

@@voightengraving yea so ive been trying more and less solution and i can never get it to transfer well, is it because I am not using the pigment based ink and just using the regular ink my printer came with?

@@YousAHunter I think that’s the problem. I use a HP 3700 séries. It’s an inkjet printer. The good news is that they are very inexpensive.

come to support and learn from you my friend. I used to be a lamp engraver in PVC and I often transfer them to pipes. but in metal it's not much different in my opinion. I used resin varnish and acetone and it worked pretty well on average. I've also used transparent nail polish and thinner, and it worked. but to get a better position of your technical drawing

Great video. Like you I learned this technique from Ray Cover, I use everything Ray taught right down to his transfer solution and the printer and ink he uses. Even though I do the process exactly as seen, I’m not getting any transfer to metal! Everything is exactly the same! What gives? Great videos keep it up.

Hi, will any pigment ink printer work with this mixture? I have been using Tom White’s solution for years but his transfer solution only works with a couple different black pigment ink and trying to find a printer that accepts those specific inks is getting more difficult to find now a days. Thank you for the excellent videos

    • @voightengraving

I honestly can’t say if any pigment ink will work. I use the cheapest 3700 series HP printer/scanner and it works like a charm. The advice I got was that the cheap HP inks work best and I’ve stuck with that and I’ve had no reason to experiment. I spent a lot less than $100 on my printer, new. Just make sure you are using print with black in only setting.

Hey Justin:) Thank you for this video. I'm having a hard time getting the image to metal. I'm ordering the pictorico and looking into a different printer. I'm pretty sure the solution is spot on but the ink just doesnt want to stick to the metal.

    • @voightengraving

It can be tricky. This technique also works with thin even coat damar varnish. Before applying the transfer, allow the damar to dry enough where your finger « squeaks » when you drag it across the surface. Good luck!
