At this point in the 1982 season Chris has played scantly, only entering the Virginia Slims of California at Oakland, where she lost for the first time to Andrea Jaeger in a tight final. In order to have another shot at Jaeger here, Chris has to work VERY hard. Evonne has points for 5-2 in the final set. The Citizen's Cup is a transplanted, newly East-Coast version of the Clairol Crown, which C...

Did you know that Betsy Nagelsen once played Chris Evert in a final? The Virginia Slims of Newport 1974, when that event was still a tune-up for the U.S. Open. Nagelsen upset Olga Morozova and Virginia Wade to arrive in the championship match. Incidentally, Chris never played her sister Jeanne Evert in singles as a professional, but they came perilously close to an Evert-Evert quarterfinal at t...

Not crisp video, sorry. This was Chrissie's last real shot at No. 1 for the year, and slick court conditions and tough cookie Nagelsen almost did her in en route to meeting Martin in the finals for all the marbles. Nagelsen never beat Evert in sanctioned singles competition during 15 years on tour together, but she had also extended Chris to three sets in the early going of Wimbledon 1984.

Not as competitive as their U.S. Open final two years earlier, but Wendy WOULD get her one career victory over Chris in singles later in 1979,, indoors in Atlanta.

Happy 40th anniversary of Chrissie's 3rd French Open title, returning from Team Tennis hiatus and rebuilding a new clay court streak after her loss to Tracy Austin in the Italian Championships. She would not lose on clay again until 1981.

Australia's Dianne Fromholtz is perhaps the least-known player with multiple wins over Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. She also had an 8-7 career record against Billie Jean King. During the 1979 season she achieved her career high ranking of 4. Earlier in the spring she had upset Navratilova at the Clairol Crown event in Carlsbad, CA then later extended Chris to 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the final....

One of the few times Chris chose to play a warmup event for the Aussie Open, the New South Wales Building Society Open at Sydney's famous White City stadium / tennis club. She came into the final very match tough after a QF blowout against Evonne and a narrow escape from Bettina Bunge in the SF. She wore this cool belted style of Ellesse skirt only briefly.

Although it was Martina Navratilova who had been the form player of 1983 snd would have her only loss that year to Horvath at the French Open, Chris had won the last two grand slams and would win her third consecutive at the French Open.
Great match. Don't remember Martin's hair permanent though.. not a good look😊
The main thing that struck me during the first few games, is the constant coughing coming from the audience!
How on earth did they hit a solid spot on using those rackets. As a young kid I owned a couple of the Yanick Noah rackets and the sweet spot was only about three inches wide. One inch off and the contact point was terrible. I should have kept those rackets.
how did chris lose 3 times to this women. no backhand, wonky (albeit tricky) forehand vs the best baseline in women's tennis ever.
Chris loved the ball Diane hit to her. Solid, hard, predictable, Chris could use Diane’s pace to hit droppers or drives to any where on the court.
That’s a bad ass look
When Martina spoke in the middle of the point at 19:00 she should have lost that point. End of point. **The REASON she should have lost that point is martina spoke and appeared to be giving up on the point and THEN played it. That's CHEATING. Her speaking in that way at that time took Chris OUT of the point. POint Evert. Isn't that right Serena? or should we confirm it with Stosur.?
When Martina spoke in the middle of the point at 19:00 she should have lost that point. End of point.
No scream at each point, birds singing in the background. What a beautiful afternoon
Between 1977-1980 Chris played two great matches at Wimbledon. 1- def king in 77 , 2- Navratilova defeated in 80 SF. In the final matches of each year at Wimbledon Chris played downright Oort when compared to rest of the year concerning her quality of play.
Evonne was the most graceful athlete I have ever seen
Bring back the outfits, todays tank tops and visors are so generic and cookie cutter
Hana Mandlikova reminds a little of the mercurial, but brilliant, Evonne Cawley. She was most talented but sometimes just not "on".
2 most annoying players tennis created 🙄
an Aussie of good German stock. got as high as number 4 in the rankings. Runner up at Kooyong, reached the semi's at the French on a few occasions
I was 7 when this match was played. This was right around the time I first started watching both pro tours with my older brother. On top of being extraordinary players, Evonne and a Chris were extraordinary people off the court as well.
Una inmensa alegría seguir viendo a esa jugadora estupenda Cris Everest
Their 38th and final meeting.
Wow, Martina was an undisciplined mess back then, shanking shots she shouldn't have. But there's no denying the RAW talent she already possessed. At 21, Chris already had the foundation of her game solidly in place
shows u what fitness and poor rackets can drag you down to unwatchable tennis... as it was
the band were awful...
all very feminine gurls
Navratilova outstanding
Chris was playing a lot better than Martina in this match.
Chrissie always looked dynamite in her tennis dresses. 😍
They became close friends as well
Female tennis of those years was unbearable, I remember happily skipping it, with very few exceptions.
I was a little kid just starting to play tennis and get into tennis at my Mom’s and Dad’s local club, but I remember the smack-talk from Hana before this contest and Chris had been struggling with the new racquet … but Hana ate a heaping helping of crow on this day. THIS was the match wherein Chris finally began to get a “feel” for her new racquet and turn things around. She skinned Hana from her head to her toes.
Evonne was so graceful playing tennis…Evonne flowed from side to side ..
Kinda mad with Tracy Austin for skipping this slam after ending Chris’ 125 winning streak in clay a few weeks earlier. Not saying she would have repeated the win but had a good chance and for sure would’ve been a tough final.
❤❤❤
Back when Tennis was graceful and players had their own individual styles. Not like today where they are just two handed clones.
oi me amoli paulo do praneta luijé amoe vosei minina
No isotonic drinks back in the day 😮
Pretty boring stuff but I liked watching Chris’s concentration.
Dang, that is one short tennis dress on Fromholz!
👨🌾👩⚕️
Wendy turnbull is such an underrated player. 3 major singles final, 4 other major singles semis, 8 straight years in the singles top 10, 4 major doubles titles, and 11 other major doubles finals.
MOONBALL.
Such a pity Tracy Austin skipped the 1979 French Ooen. She’d ended Chris’ 125 match win streak in clay in Rome a few weeks earlier and then returned to the US. I’m sure it would have been a hard fought Evert-Austin final in ‘79.
I so wish the game would return to wooden racquets
❤❤❤

Such a shame Tracy Austin skipped Paris that year having ended Chris’ 125 clay winning streak a couple of weeks earlier in Rome. The French deserved an Evert v Austin final that year.
I always thought this match was one of Chrissie's finer moments. Hana showed no respect and Evert put the hammer down
It is surprising to see Chris Evert hit out in the tiebreak. Usually, she plays conservatively when she is in a tight spot and was prone to losing in her later years. Lindqvist seemed like a solid player, but I don't remember seeing her or hearing her name during that time.
