These are the matches Evert built her legacy on. These early round nail biters are all over every career, but Evert lost far fewer of them than the other greats in the sport. Somehow Chris winds up winning the really important points, especially that last one and she ends up in the finals over and over and over again when other champions don't quite so inevitably. In any given year, Evert will have, on average one early round exit.
Great post. I remember watching this and think it is the only match I saw Chris serve and volley in. I am interested in seeing if my memory is correct!
Note; Nagelsen suffered a terrible back injury early on in her career (by trying to jump over the net 😰) thus she was never able to live up to her potential as an athlete and player
I never liked Chris Evert much as a commentator. BJK, Virginia Wade, Mary Carillo, Pam Shriver, Joanne Russell, heck even Tracy Austin - they'll all better than her. Chris doesn't seem to be well-read or cerebral at all. So many of her comments are predictable, rote even cliche.
@@johndillani5552 Amen. She really doesn't add much. Chris was such a class act on court- her behaviour was faultless- but sometimes her on air commentary can lapse into cattiness or sarcasm, rather surprisingly.

Love my Chrissie, but one place where Betsy ended up besting her is at being a great TV tennis commentator IMO.
Betsy had a more pleasant on air voice than Chris, but to me, Chrissie is more insightful as a commentator. That’s just me, though.

@@johndillani5552 You read my mind! 😬

Rubbish. Chris understands the mentality of the player at different points. Y’all are a bit dim.
