Wendy is still trying, but when you look at Evert's career stats, very rarely did anyone outside the top five in the world, come back from a set deficit to beat Chris in 3 in her prime ( 1974-1986). Evert just got better as her matches unfolded. She hit harder, hit closer to the lines, began to be more bold, and almost never got physically or mentally tired. It took a herculean effort to dethrone her once she got that set under her belt. This match was lost by the first four games of set 1.

Brad a million thanks for posting these amazing Chris Evert videos!!! I saw Chris play several times in person first time was in Boston at Boston University for the Virginia Slims tour stop then at the Boston Garden back in the early 80s an exhibition match against Martina and the last time in Miami at the Lipton tournament in the late 80s. Always a big fan of Chris Evert!!!! Thanks Man very cool!!!!

Wendy’s singles career is sort of forgotten but highly successful. 3 career slam finals and semifinals of 4 others with career high ranking #3. Every bit as good as Shriver’s, if not better. But most people would remember Pam’s career first.

Having her clay court streak broken just weeks before , I’m sure winning here helped Chris to feel better about her clay court pride.

Such a pity Tracy Austin skipped the 1979 French Ooen. She’d ended Chris’ 125 match win streak in clay in Rome a few weeks earlier and then returned to the US. I’m sure it would have been a hard fought Evert-Austin final in ‘79.

Would love to see the match that ended Chris's biggest winning streak when Di Fromholtz had one of her 3 victories over Chris.

Her 125 clay court streak was broken by Austin in Rome just weeks before this win here. I attended the 1973 western tournament in Cincinnati where Goolagong beat her . That was her last loss on clay till Austinnbeat her in a third set tiebreaker 7-4. That’s 125 straight clay court match wins, incredible. Also for 1976,1977,1978 Chris didn’t play the French opted to play World team tennis instead. She surely would’ve won those three titles if she had played.

Turnbull was the rabbit, not the kindest of nicknames on the tour

Rabbit was a nickname praising her speed, it was never seen as less than complimentary.

The sad thing about this match is that Wendy played well. She tired everyone and carved out many good points that she won. This was just Chris’s time.

This match was a walk in the park for Chris. Ah, those days when Evert had no challengers on clay !
Evert did luck out here tho. Austin had just snapped her 125 consecutive match win streak on clay two weeks prior at the Italian Open and elected not to play at the French.
Otherwise Evert might not have won here or won so easily.

I’ve always wandered why Austin hardly ever played the French? You would know yes?

shihlin1 she skipped the French in 79 because she was finishing her school year, and Austin had not entered into Chris s mind as unbeatable . Losing to Austin was a shock to her and she would’ve been eager after a loss to beat Austin had she played and met Chris in the final. It wasn’t until after the open where Tracy really hit her stride and Chris became scared of her. Chris played two poor matches that year. Tracy outplayed Chris at Italian to win there. At eastborne Chris beat Martina 13-11 in third set only to be down 5-2 in first and second set to lose 6-4,6-4 in the worst played grand slam f evert career. Then evert beat Austin in yhrree sets and two weeks later lost 6-4,6-3 . Up 4-3 30-0 Chris blew an overhead and lost 6 games in a row. She was up 40- love or 40-15 in 3 of the 6 games. She finally started to lean into her shots down 5-2 and was within a point of 5-4 two times. Chris played back to back lousy slam finals ( Wimbledon and open half asleep and rightfully lost both. This woke her up to how eager and disapppointed she was because in 1980 she beat Martina at Wimbledon and beat Austin at the Open . She regained number one ranking for the year 1980.

@@maxipaz5597it w. As important to Tracy to experience high school so she didn’t play the French during this time. Odd because she competed at Italian open. I suspect playing on red clay and the French had a unique red clay composition unlike any where else. Finals of high school occurred during French Open and Tracy was finishing up the year as a junior and a senior and skipped the French.
