I was 7 when this match was played. This was right around the time I first started watching both pro tours with my older brother. On top of being extraordinary players, Evonne and a Chris were extraordinary people off the court as well.
Unfortunately the material is plagued with disdurbing "screen pollution" if you know what I mean. It makes it impossible to follow the matchplay the majority of time. Thank you for the upload! The sequences you can actually see without those infrictions are highly enjoyable!
There is a lot of fan revisionism here. I'm sure 90% of the spectators in Palm Beach that day were rooting for Chris Evert. Today Evonne Goolagong is a celebrated inspiration around the world, but then she was just an Aussie upsetting their American star.
With all due credit to the mellifluous Goolagong, who played beautifully and with superb strategy, I have rarely seen the great Evert more flat, tentative, and streaky than during this odd contest. Her groundstrokes were timid from the beginning; she is hesitant and guiding the ball rather than driving through it in most cases. Her pace and depth were unremarkable. Her footwork was way off. Her passing shots, lobs, and drop shots were often clumsy and ineffectual. Her serves were especially weak. There was a timidity to her game rarely exhibited on any surface, much less her favorite, and though Evonne was responsible for some of that due to crafty play, Evert was a mess ... compared to her usual standard. This was, after all, Goolagong’s first match of the season. The fact that Evert managed to win while playing as “ugly” as I’ve ever seen her play is a testament to the incomparable power of her mind. If Goolagong hadn’t choked, this would have been a stomach-churning loss for Evert. By the way, Goolagong was playing with one of the newer composite racquets, like many other players. Evert, who had taken almost the entire 3-4 months off at the beginning of the year, ought to have used the time to make her own switch to graphite at this point. Tennis history might have been quite different had she done so.
I think Evonne’s “timidity” and “hesitance” had quite a lot to do with the opponent across the net - Chris Evert! Chris has that effect on opponents and even Evonne felt it.
It does go to show that everybody has their bad days, and even though Chris was not 100% in this match, she still managed to pull it out. As far as Evonne, she has given Chris many tough matches, and maybe Chris wasn't up for it. Although Chris was well Ahead in wins over Evonne.. Chris has often said that she would love to have that 1980 Wimbledon final back against her which she felt she should have won, And the one at 1977 against Virginia
Evonne can't wait Evert..it is a suicide way of play.Evonne has lost many matches against King and Evert in this silly way.She needed a great coach like Connors did.
Against Evert maybe, but why is that a bad tactic against King. it seems the dream way to play King it so force her to be at the baseline and play long rallies is perfect. If Goolagong had been able to do that vs King she would win almost every match, but quite the contrary she could not prevent King from attacking the net and winning that way.

Beautifully played from a two time mother and two time Wimbledon champion
Love watching Evonne, she must have had the best backhand ever in the woman's game.
Evonne, what a talent, beautiful player, could watch her forever. Class A
Evonne was such an effortless mover around the court.
Evonne is such a delight
Who won the Lloyd-Jaeger match?
Ever Lloyd won.

Hi Brad, have you been able to contact tennis fighters video collection recently? They don't seem to answer their emails at the moment. Thanks
No, I haven't reached out to buy anything new in a couple of years. Less discretionary income than I used to have. Good luck!

@@ernc1941 He was referring to Evert being timid by her own high standards, not Goolagong.
