      I'm sorry but I don't understand your comment. If I can parse through the typos and grammatical hiccups, I think you're saying that Poussin stated his opinion. I don't believe I said he didn't or shouldn't. My response speaks for itself.

    They were both great players and both did so much to make the sport so popular in the 70s. Wonderful role models. I would love to see Evonne in the Royal Box in 2020 to celebrate her 40th anniversary

    I used to love watching Goolagong/Cawley play.
    For me, she fitted into that group of people (like Mandlikova) who was tremendously gifted, with almost every shot in the book, but who was, "streaky."
    On her day, almost unplayable.
    Of course, Navratilova had all of that too, but also a steely work ethic, which probably explains her greater success.
    Still, I believe that Cawley *did* win Wimbledon, for the 2nd time, the following year.

      Wild Heart Yes, you’re right, she did. And seven grand slams in total, so not too shabby! (I know not as many players went to Australia to play the Open in the 1970s, but it’s still an achievement.)

      I agree she was breathtaking and the cynosure of interest wherever and whenever she played but none of the others (apart from Court who retired in 75-76 had kids at that stage or the injuries that come with it...when Evonne wanted to win she beat them all (Wimbledon 1980) and many other big titles..MN had a huge team getting her to reach her potential and that was great for her and Chris was from a tennis coaching father and they are BOTH incredible..but I pretty much think that tennis was all the better for throwing this Australian rags to riches story into the mix....

    • @maxipaz5597
      @maxipaz5597 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      whats your point? MN came to the fore in the 80s long after Evonne basically retired. She also never had two kids )which forced her to miss 77 and 81.Hana never won Wimbledon and Evonne has two singles (against Court and Evert no less) and two World ending VS championshipsTitles in 74 and 76...no comparison to Mandlikova who never achieved any of that actually also Evonne never had the loads of people (Coaches etc) that MN had to reach her deserved greatness. As for a steely resolve I think Wimbledon 80 cancelled out your argument m8

    Has anyone else noticed that the scoreboard has both of their names wrong? Mrs. J.M Lloyd & Mrs. R.M. Cawley. Both were using both of their names Evert-Lloyd & Goolagong-Cawley. They made the same errors with "Mrs. S. Williams," which is wrong because she is not married to Mr. Williams.

    Evonne was the one player Chris has always said ( and said after her win at clay courts final 1979) that she had a hard time having the killer instinct with because she liked her so much and was so much fun to watch due to her graceful way of moving and hitting the balk . I think she was deeply disappointed losing the W 80 final to her because she had finally beaten Martina in SF after losing the 78&79 w finals to her . Chris has just beaten Evonne at Chichester final the tournament before 80 W final . I think she took Evonne too lightly and Evonne came out playing the match if her life winning the first 13 points of the match . Chris deserves to lose with an attitude like that and cane almost over prepared fir the 81 W final while the rest of the field played horribly . Martina was off to an inspired Hana while Evert had shriver ( who had strained her shoulder beating Austin ) two of the years Chris won W , it kinda was handed to her 74, 81 . The 76 W final she worked hard for beating Martina 6-4 in third in SF and Evonne 8-6 in the third . Chris s performance against Wade and Martina in 78 were abysmal . Evonne was so good in 80 she beat Austin in SF then outplayed Chris in final - her last best tournament t if her career . Evonne won when not expected ( w71 and 80 )

She has to be 100 percent engaged to win on grass. Happened in 72 semi, 75 semi. 77 semi. 79 final for sure. And first set of 80 final. So unexplainable - didn’t happen at other venues.

      Martin Pascoe your such a piece of shit you troll. Name another venue where Chris had trouble as at Wimbledon ? at the US Open from 1975-1985 she won 6 times and never let herself down. The times she lost she was beaten by a player that outplayed her. Same at the French and Australian. What I am saying is that there is something about grass that distracts her , she is not her usual self . If this happened at other venues then I wouldn’t point it out. I don’t think her opponents play making her play poorly for her is the sole answer.. Grass was never her best surface. I think it’s the surface more than any other factor. Your the one who decided to insult me and be ugly putting words in my comments that were not there. Speaks to the creep that you are. Sorry Chris’s record pisses you off. What kind of woman are you to bring down the role of a female athlete to who is the more attractive? Nobody graced a tennis court with better rhythm and timing than Evonne but this was matched by Chris’s precision and consistency. This may not have been their best match but it is illustrative of the way tennis was progressing to a more baseline play than the serve and volley of the grasscourt players. I can’t believe a woman has reduced a tennis mach to who wore the bloody lipstick. You should be ashamed.

      The data speaks for itself. Evert led the rivalry 26-13. Even if you take out the last 4 matches, it is 22-13 Evert. Evert was quite simply the better player and this is not meant as an insult to Evonne. From what I remember, Evonne herself acknowledged and accepted the fact that Evert was ahead of her. The “metronome” quality of Evert helped against Evonne.

      Indy glf if you’ve ever played tennis with a wood racket like have you’d understand that the equipment of today make tennis a completely different game. One had to rely on strategy, placement, mental strength rather than power. You could not hit a winner from behind the baseline if you opponent was on the opposite baseline . Wood rackets did not give you the power to do that unlike today’s

      @@lenwelch2195 exactly! a wood racket heck even early graphite rackets of the 80's compared to rackets AND strings today is like comparing a wet paper towel and titanium steel!.. i will always believe that tennis players "back then" were quote actually better TENNIS players then today's players, they HAD TO BE because of the technology.. today's players are basically athletes who just happen to play tennis and given the advantage of the weaponry now..

    Martin passcode. Maxi Paz: These two troll on evert matches and go after Evert fans. Even if the opponent is not mentioned they gang up on any one who has any thing to say that’s nice about Chris. Hopefully these two after I’ve reported the will stop.
