    The Berlin tournament was one of the most pleasant places to play. The ever present bird song and the time it was held in spring made it particularly nice. It had a very relaxed feel to it.

    Horvath was a top 5 player on clay in 83. Wins against Andrea Jaeger, Martina Navratilova, and a close match vs. Chris Evert in the finals of the German Open.

      Top 10 perhaps but definitely not top 5. She played 11 clay court tournaments that year . This was the only final she reached and she lost in 9 of them to Mandlikova, Garrison, Gadusek, Jolissaint, Ruzici, Temesvari, Jausovec, Sukova and Huber.

    Not sure what kind of look Horvath was going for with that hairstyle. She had a great claycourt game and was very patient and consistent. Also her footwork was very good. Chris certainly had "swagger" on clay and she pranced around the court with a definite air. The ultimate court tactician.

  • @lenwelch2195

    Horvath suffered same obstacle as Evert before Chris committed to intense gym work . Both had weak upper body strength . This affected their overhead smashes , serve and oddly their ability to volley. When you volley you have to make contact with the ball at shoulder level and hit laterally. This takes upper body strength to hit concussively.in order to put the. Ball away. Having upper body strength also affects your gate and sense of presence . Evert and Evert had concave upper bodies. If Horvath had trained upper body she could’ve been a much more successful player. Her court sense and menta game were very gd but she had to hit too many balls to win a point and physically got worn down to last by the third set giving her opponent too many chances .

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The other thing on the volley that even after 61 yrs of age and many many lessons to volleybetter myself a s8mple adjustment . Place a sock in rupight armpit, never open up your arm so sock can fall to ground . Keep upper arm close to your body so sock doesn’t fall out. Your keeping upper arm close to your body. When making volley contact with the ball, use your legs for strength while punching the ball away. The force imparted on that ball skyrockets. It’s not hit with great force but by keeping the inside of your arm close to side of your body and meeting the ball from that position and punching forward , gaining strength from your legs moving forward by a step that ball will have 2+0,3 times the force which puts the ball away. Hitting volleys with arm awaupy from the body screws up ability to track the ball , contact points floats all over the place making volley landing point unpredictable . It’s much harder to volley the wrong way. It’s much easier to keep inside upper arm close so you don’t open up from arm pit. A coach showed me this and after 3 tries my volleys were conclusively hit with precision and consistency. It made putting that volley using your legs for added power . Even hitting drop volleys you absorb the power of oncoming ball with your legs rather than trying to hold the ball or by cupping the ball to absorb oncoming ball in order to hit a drop volley. I think of the hundreds of missed drop volleys hit by Hana Mandlikova. When she hit her drop volleys perfectly I think she unknowingly kept her inside of her upper arm close to side of her body and used her legs to absorb the force of the incoming ball especially for the two days which were consecutive days for her Sf and final in 85 open. She did it again inn87 AO against Martina. Another fantastic thing she figured out in her match with Martina was that she stepped up to baseline on return of Martina’s serve and once again kept her inside of her upper arm close to her side of her body and angled short cross court serve returns not hit with great power but out of reach to the net rushing of Martina. That was one shot Chris was never trained to do. By 85 with her graphite Chris finally unlearned the big swings needed with a wood racket on return of serve. The graphite with a shorter punch return would send her ball at Martina’s feet. What Chris didn’t learn was to keep her inside of her upper arm closer so that her armpit was not opened up. With legs and keeping upper arm close to her body ( not extending her arm ( so if a sick was held in armpit the sock would fall , and angle her serve returns out of reach to Martina coming in to the net facing her opponent from where she served in the service box. Serena’s coach with a name I cannot spell is a proponent of this find although a teaching pro at my club taught this method to me last June. I wonder if he learned it from Serena’s coach. It’s amazing how tiny adjustments or approach dramatically affects the quality of the game. I think of the 84 US indoor , the first tournament that Chris used her graphite racket was able to take Martina to a 7-6 loss in second set . Until then she lost 5 matches winning just one set in 83 at Canadian open mostly because Martina blew an overhead sitter. Her returns down the line off of Martina’s serve in deuce court was another asset. Martina being left handed jphad just learned to hit wide in deuce court , a shot very difficult for a left handed. She couldn’t resist hitting her newly found skill and Chris caught on, Chris up to that point expected Martina in deuce court to hit at her or down the T. Chris loved the out wide serve in deuce court as most right handed players love. It opens up the court for the returner. - down the line behind the server if they rush the net after the serve , or hitting at net rushers feet or cross court. In general when serving to a right handed and your right handed , never serve out wide on second serve ( most players strongest side is their forehand and your weakest serve is the second serve. On backhand it’s best to serve out wide or in middle at the opponent. Only serve down the T occasionally especially if the serve returner tends to stand to their left expecting a serve to their backhand so if the serve is served down middle or down the T they can use their better side ( forehand ) to return that serve. If it’s hit to their backhand they are ib perfect position to hit the ball with their backhand.

    What I notice most about this portion of the match is that whilst Horvath is very quick her anticipation on the Evert drop shot is nothing close to Evert's anticipation when moving up the court.
    Horvath looks about 10. I'm assuming injuries curtailed what should have been a better career given her level of play.

    Don't get the sense Evert is playing with authority in this match. She's letting Horvath dictate play, but bc of Horvath's inexperience, Evert still wins the big points. Horvath obviously in good form as she made the finals here and of course the biggest win of her life against Navratilova a few weeks later. Chris not 100% in this match, but still finds a way to win, but if Horvath had been mentally tougher, this would've been much closer.

      It's the graphite racket that Horvath is playing with, verse the wood that Evert is still playing with; that gives Horvath the pace (heat) on her shot in comparison to Evert. That all changed, when Evert let go of the wood, at the end of this year (83).

    Mentally evert imposed her will and won that first set. Horvath played well but she lost in the mind. I believe this match taught her to hang on , to treat each point individually and stay in the present in order to be match tough to win against an off form Navratilova weeks later at the French . Chris primed Horvath to be mentally prepared for her match with Martina.

    evert is setting this up for a long three setter. Those dropshot may win a point in the first set, but they WILL win her the last several games in the third. Chris is almost never more tired than her opponent in that third. That is because she is incredibly 'motion efficient'' in her stroke production and her footwork and she wastes no energy between points on outbursts or excess celebration etc. She keeps her engine running at its maximum for fuel efficiency. When gets time to play that seventh game in the final set. her tank is barely registers past the halfway mark and her opponent's dashboard light is flashing.

    This Berlin event was a wonderful stop on the way to the French Open - often referred to as a "tune-up." What happened here almost exactly ten years later was the stuff of nightmares - Monica Seles (then the number one world tennis professional) was stabbed by some wacked-out "fan" of Steffi Graf. No blame to the lovely Steffi - she was rightly shocked and appalled. What STILL bothers me is the idea of the attacker was essentially pardoned for attempted murder - based on the "mental illness" defense. Monica did come back to the game a couple of years later, but was never quite the same player. Monica vowed to never again step foot in Germany - and who can blame her?

    Horvath hairstyle makes her look like a 35 year old mom about to tell her kids to get in the van because it’s time to take the kids to soccer practice. She’s a beautiful girl. Before this tournament Chris decided at 29 she was now too old for the pony tail and opted for this trendy headband. This was the year before the famous ugly mid 80’s perm swept the nation. Ugh,! ( 84-86 perm years Evert had her last perm just before the 86 French and it started to grow out for Wimbledon in her loss to Hana. She looked her best physically in 88 - finely toned muscled body along with youthful hairstyle. She looked her worse hair wise in 6 French. Her hair made her look so old.

    • @nassauguy48
      @nassauguy48 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horvath was a good player, but she had kind of a nasty mouth that alienated a lot of the other players. She rarely gave credit to equal or lower ranked players who beat her, she criticized those who questioned players at such young ages playing on the circuit as "jealous" (and then bragged that she made more money than brain surgeons), and, just a few years ago, took the time to trash some poor 69 year old woman for winning a first round match at some low ranking satellite event as "dumb" and her 21 year old opponent as "dumber", and both of them as a "waste of time". Unfortunately, she was not the nicest person on the tour.
