The Most Dangerous RPG in the World
Hey again everyone. We're back today with another TTRPG story, this time featuring Steve Jackson Game's GURPS Cyberpunk. Written by Loyd Blankenship, one of the internets earliest and most influential hackers. Known online as the Mentor, Loyd was a core member of the 1980s hacking group the Legion of Doom.
The Legion of Doom kept quite busy in the wild west days of BBSes (Bulletin Board Systems). They were on the forefront of modern hacking and phone phreaking advancements which they happily shared with others. This giving attitude unfortunately drew them the ire of the federal government as others used their techniques to cause chaos across the country.
The governments gaze would eventually fall on Loyd Blankenship and Steve Jackson Games, aimed primarily at their Illuminati BBS and its cyberpunk chatter. This would eventually lead to a raid of Loyd's home and his employer Steve Jackson games, with the men in black confiscating GURPS Cyberpunk for months.
SJG would win in the end however, successfully suing the United States government for damages.

I'm always sad with how hated the Kuei-Jin are. I really like them even if I understand why they're controversial. As for Beast, I find it interesting, but very, VERY poorly executed. Some people have said to read it from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, which makes it more bearable according to them. Other people try to rewrite the lore to make it more bearable. As for the Fifth Edition stuff that has gone on, well, I could go on and on but I've found homebrew that helps alleviate a good few problems. By problems, I don't mean controversies like, say, beast or gypsy. But I do mean problems in the sense of "wow this just feels like it hates its fans" or "wow, this feels like it was written by someone who doesn't know their own lore."

Kuei Jin. Nuff' said. edit: Okay, not enough said. Beast: the Primordial. I had a long list of complaints about this game and that was before it was revealed that it was just a Gary Stew, self-insert power fantasy for the author. The controversy surrounding the author just validated most of what I thought was wrong with the venue. Even the complaints I had that weren't related to the dickish themes of abuse turn me off from the game. I won't even go over that list here, but suffice to say in my head cannon Beast doesn't exist in the CoD. I won't play it, I won't run it, I won't acknowledge that this splat exists in the CoD during a crossover game if I'm the ST, and if someone else runs a CoD game I'll let them know I'm not interested in Beast crossovers, and I'll loose interest in the game if they bring one in or if someone plays a Beast. Everything else is cool but Beast. I'm iffy about their newest splat because it doesn't follow folklore in a modern setting like every other venue, but I'll give it a chance.

I need to say, the whole gypsy thing is a parody, mostly because we are all so bad educated on the topic. Gypsy - is not an offencive word, it is culture, way of living. While many romani are gypsy, there are celtic and germanic gypsy with really high population in Europe. Romani - ethnic group (I will not use Roma as it means male) that have the majority of gypsy population, but not every romani is gypsy. I believe the ravnos myth came from actual romani (I will call it sect because I just don't know better word in english) sect that believes a romani have stolen one nail from the romans when they wanted to put Jesus on the cross. And because they lowered the suffering of Jesus, god allows them to steal. However, I am not educated enough on those believes to say it for sure, but from all the people I know, none of the romani sharing those believes is a gypsy. I may be wrong here, but in any case it is extremely offensive to take a specific sect and put it on entire ethnic group. I am just saying where probably their inspiration came from.

Very interesting video. I believe South Korea's Nexon Co. became the huge monster of a company today because of a similar trend. NexusTK (still alive today) became the first subscription stepping stone that led to their more famous titles like Maplestory and Dark Ages. But rather than stick with a subscription model, they cleverly went free to play and instead mixed the bowl with a plethora of transactions: microtransactions, pay-to-win, currency - all funds coalescing into the huge corporation we have today. I myself was thrown in with their FPS Combat Arms, which housed an extensive catalog. I'm not sure how popular Nexon was in America at the very start of the new millennium, but by the time CA was around they were fully rooted and cashing out exponentially through these games. Greed has led gaming down a long and winding path through history stemming from pitching a few extra quarters into an arcade machine in the 90s.

I was fortunate enough to be invited onto Lifeweb, and played it for a year-and-a-half before eventually dropping off. My access has been rescinded, due to the prolonged inactivity that followed. For what it's worth, however, I'm content. Lifeweb is undeniably awful, in the sense that its players can create truly depraved situations that'd otherwise be restricted to the minds of the mentally disturbed. At the same time, however, Lifeweb provides amazing experiences that cannot be matched by any other server on the hub. A friend once said that the server is 'beautifully ugly' - and while they might've been referring to its artstyle (which is a hodgepodge of borrowed and homemade sprites colored through an unorthodox palette), I believe that their comment perfectly describes Lifeweb too. There's no other game on the platform (or the internet in general) that can truly replicate what Lifeweb's capable of. Maybe that's for the better, maybe it's the worse. All I know is that I don't regret delving into the rabbit hole. It'll be quite exciting to see how Scorcher plays out too, even if it's only viewed from the sidelines. And, of course, here's some memorable experiences to note before I depart: * As a Censor, I once led a counter-attack against the Soulbreakers. We blindly leapt into their portal, and fought them within the orbital satellite's claustrophic corridors. After multiple close calls, we managed to subdue every last Soulbreaker, dragging them - and their lockers, filled with advanced technology - back to Ravenheart. Before I left that satellite, however, I found myself captivated by a windowed glimpse into the starry cosmos. For a moment, I truly felt weightless: as if I finally recognized just how small we were in the grand scheme of things. * As a Blacksmith, I once fashioned a masterwork in tribute of the Baron: a master-crafted adamantium longsword. Because I was pressed for time (and wanted to stop by the Merchant to purchase more ore), I foolishly entrusted my Apprentice with carrying the longsword to the Baron. To my horror, I found out that a bum had almost-immediately knocked out my Apprentice after I left, took the sword, and ended up killing most of Ravenheart's garrison inside of the inn. Well, at least that proved it wasn't shoddily made. * As a Marshal, I once awoke on Orbital Station 13 and helplessly watched as everything went to hell: starting off with stumbling across the corpse of our Captain, slumped in a chair and dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Rattled by meteor strikes and creatures from beyond the stars, our only saving grace was the Charon's timely arrival. By the skin of our teeth, we made it off that decaying spaceship and were shepherded to the Leviathan. One could only wonder whether we'd earn a place there with our ancient knowledge, or simply be condemned to the airlock. * As an Inquisitor, I once threw myself into the Charon - the 'escape shuttle' - right before it took off, narrowly hitching a ride off of that doomed and monster-infested planet. It was only myself, the Baron, and another man. As the Charon flew through the stars, the man asked us a simple question, "if we had paper for him to record his sum". Never in my life had I been stricken with such dread as I realized just *who* this man actually was. I was far too late on the draw, however: and just before I could ready my Harat, the man had reached forth and snapped my neck with a single twist. Fondly remembered, to the end.

I've never joined their official community on Discord, so I might've missed some sort of registration process that was instated after I left. Alternatively, my original sponsor - who I haven't spoken to since I stopped playing - might've gotten himself into trouble, after I stopped playing. There was an older policy where if a sponsor was banned, the access of his sponseree(?) would be revoked. Not too sure, though. I wouldn't mind being able to visit Lifeweb again. It's funny, I actually found the Waiting Room initially, before I ended up (against all odds) bumping into a long time player. When I mentioned that Lifeweb might be up their alley, due to some of the stuff they were developing at the time, they actually brought me aboard. My first game was pure chaos as I panicked to remember the controls, and my role, and then people were talking to me. I think my 'dad' for that session clocked that I was brand new, but had enough know-how to at least be somewhat immersive, so he took me off to the side to teach me about certain aspects. He also hit on the Innkeeper lady, and we all had an incredibly wholesome ending to a round where he asked her out and I got a step-mom! Arguably a great first impression. Marred by the next rounds. The one round where I played a guard for a noble coming into Ravenheart wasn't too bad, went without incident. The round where I played the child apprentice was some of my worst. I wanted to roleplay learning how smithing works, and while I did learn a little bit of it at the time, my forge master was really insistent on using the tutoring mechanic, which for some reason had this little quirk where you had to nod to their prompt IMMEDIATELY after they spewed their generated dialog. This meant I had to focus less on what was actually being said and more about hitting the button at the right timing which took me out of it. The second time I played child apprentice was arguably the fucking worst: forge master SSD'd, the other apprentice took the hammer and ran the fuck off, and I couldn't get the merchant to ship in a new one, meanwhile the king is getting impatient with the lack of spears being made and just, not giving a shit that I physically couldn't make anything, and finally, the mort broke into the basement, ganked me and kidnapped me for power-torture-play while putting me on the lifeweb. At that point my character was having an anger-filled breakdown with how bullshit their day was, and the mort just kept saying some edgy dumb bs and not really roleplay with me in any capacity. And then he cut my tongue out. Which not only disabled my say function, but my '/me' function as well, which I'd been using almost exclusively for any dialogue and roleplay. That shit killed my enjoyment. I liked playing as a Fortune Teller since I could roleplay some bullshit, I had money and a number of other cool things, including my own home! But ultimately, anytime I tried to dig deeper, it felt like the mechanics tripped up my ability to roleplay if the players weren't already infringing on it. I didn't even think to donos the guy at the time because of how shocked I was that anyone would do that without a genuine roleplay reason.

IRE doesn't get nearly enough credit as the origin of this absolute garbage. They also don't get enough credit for pioneering the art of coercing their own players to be unpaid employees, ironically even requiring p2w achievements to qualify to work for them for free. Going beyond the P2W nightmare Achaea also invented the idea of having players be the main devs and content creators without pay, and ironically requiring P2W achievement to even qualify to work for them for free. Truly worthy of a detailed case study on human manipulation. I remember paying $700 of my McDonald's paychecks as a 16yo for a single (text) item that didn't even do anything but was literally just a paywall to be able to PVP. (Achaea OGs will immediately recognize the veil of the sphinx). Hehe I also know exactly who "S" is but only because of the S, as there are many people who match that description. It wasn't just combat either. It also used p2w for roleplay, politics, popularity, etc. You can pay $600 today to be able to emote an extra line of text, and do so in colour!

4:36 - That's not entirely accurate; As he writes in the Afterword of Wraith's 1st edition core book, Mark Rein-Hagen (MRH) says that he was running a playtest for Inferno with some friends when a pizza guy's car rolled down a hill (while he was out making a delivery - apparently the handbrake had failed) and it crashed into a transformer near the front of the house where the playtest was being run. MRH had to pull the guy back out of the car (who was unsuccessfully trying to reverse it out of the transformer) when MRH saw flames coming out from the crumpled vehicle - both were clear when the car was suddenly engulfed in flames. Because nobody wanted to go back to the playtest after the shock and excitement caused by the crash (and also because the crash cause a power blackout for that part of the neighbourhood), MRH decided to abandon the playtest, and he shelved all the notes for Inferno and forgot all about the game until someone suggested that MRH re-purpose them for Wraith (so they were never loss in a fire, they were just gathering dust until MRH was convinced to re-use them). MRH then explained that once he started re-using some of the concepts and writing from Inferno in Wraith, all sorts of bad and weird events started happening to almost everyone involved in it's production - so much so that apparently one co-worker suggested that if MRH died while making the game, they'll add his ashes to the ink of the first print run... this may have been written by MRH for dramatic effect, but it is said to be the origin of the so-called "Wraith Curse" that has plagued the delevopment of both the 1st and 2nd Editions, and the 20th Anniversary edition too.

Bro your Bloodlines game is broken tp shit, are you sure you're playing with the unofficial patch? Also memory leaks occur after four or five hours, so restart if so.

Just a side note, Paradox's games were grand strategy, not 4X.🤓 Besides the slip, its kind of sad. I had prayed that someone who cared (like PDX then) would buy White Wolf and embark on Bloodlines 2 as it was meant to be. Little did I know that Paradox had already started to go downhill from their beloved days, its by then they got their strategy of just shitting out endless usually low quality DLC at shit price points (it wasn't always like that). We even got Bloodlines 2 eventually announced. And seeing the epic clusterfuck that has been VTMB2 development, as well as the dogshit that are the 5E editions of the gamelines, maybe I shouldn't wish for anything - I clearly monkey pawed all this 😥

I would probably play more if the community was not so flagrantly edgy-lotta gatekeepers, terminally online people who love slurs, etc - people who only serve to cultivate the toxic reputation lifeweb has. No doubt, an interesting game, though sometimes mired in poor rp and sex fiends - one of the cons of the lack of moderation.

      >slurs are le bad No one says slurs in game so why do you care, how can you lose to words in a world where death is common? Consider the scope and priority, words mean nothing in a world of decay and death

i actually miss kindred of the east, in theory. it was flawed, and you are right, it should have been it's own splat, but in V5 basically everything is a black hole outside of America and a few European cities. I'd rather have dumb Chinese supernaturals than none at all. According to Paradox, half the world just doesn't exist because they can't be bothered to hire a few Asian writers, which is really all they ever needed.

Got good new for you unless you already found it. Theres two KoTE supplements on Storytellers Vault. One for 20th Anniversary (KoTE: The Relentless Age) and one for V5 (Kuei-Jin: The Hungy Ghosts). Neither are official, but they're really cool.

I used to skulk in pigpen for potential new dudes that seemed alright, but they nuked access after someone had a contest or some shit and mass invited people. Also Map 5 SUCKED ASS. I joined sometime during 4 and couldn’t get a grip on the game. Learned through trial by fire going migrant every round eventually. Unfortunately missed a lot of 4 because of it and suffered with 5 for ages. 6 was an actual godsend in comparison, I don’t remember that many people complaining about it until we got new ones to be honest. Mostly people complain about 7(Streets) it seems. Also I was in the minority that liked burrows I guess haha. Also the removal of Wanderlust is the most criminal thing Randy’s ever done to the game. Most of my most memorable moments come directly from that mode. Great video though dude. Honestly a lot of stuff I didn’t even know about despite being in the community since 2016.
