The Birth of World of Warcraft Private Servers

- Hey everyone, in this video I cover the birth of Warcraft private servers. WoW has been one of my favorite games for a long time now and with the release of Shadowlands it had me thinking back to some of my favorite emulators and private servers throughout the years. Did you know that WoW had private servers out before the game even released? Our story starts with Skull, a hacker known for making botting programs, eventually getting his hands on the alpha version of WoW and releasing it to the public. Then Lax, another bot maker taking up the reigns and publishing Stormcraft, the very first world of warcraft private server. It was extremely barebones, but it worked and for the first time in MMORPG history, players would get to explore azeroth.

Blacklair - a portuguese only private server. It was so ridiculously buggy and laggy and yet, it was the most fun I had in the game, ever.
I really enjoy this style of video and I love the focus on the developers rather than specific projects.

wowemu was a paid software that got cracked every time.
OpenWoW was a project I hosted, and was based off TeamPython and WSD core.
It was suppose to merge with wowd (known as Antrix and Ascent Core), but then Blizzard knocked at my door in 2005.
Never signed their C&D papers, but OpenWoW died cause of the threats they made towards me (which in the end was total bullshit though).
Now I host a server with friends (VengeanceWoW and the now LightsVengeance), and it's purely a hobby right now.
Also, the Alpha client got leaked indeed, and the beta client as well, it contained DEBUG code in the wow.exe file, so it was pretty simple to create a private server for it, the binary basically gave you enough information how to do it. Back then, my coding skills were not great, but I learned it from the other pserver developers :)
Also, as info, BlizzHackers got shut down after Blizzard was at my door in 2005, they went to the UK where it was hosted, and threatened the owner of that forum.

Super cool! I've always been interested in the deep history of private servers. I started playing on them in 2011 and have loved the growth and development of server scripting, community, and the impact it has had on the meta and understanding of vanilla.
