What's everyone's favorite smash game? Mines melee

Considering how melee's mechanics work, it was bound to draw a competitive scene anyways.
I think a reason that this community has survived 20 years, when other full-on esports haven't, is actually *because* of the inability to have updates.
No matter how broken fox is, or how unfun jigglypuff is, those characters are never going to change. You can't hope for a balance update that overpowers your main, all you can do is improve yourself.
This makes for one of the most skill-based video games of all time. One that, if nintendo actually decides to support it, could reach competitive levels that could rival ACTUAL SPORTS.
With this amount of voices in support of melee, in this day and age, of all times, the choice to port melee to the switch should be obvious.

I agree with you. Nothing plays quite like smash. While I’m not competitive, I’ve spent countless hours playing it with friends and love it dearly.

I believe that the reason nintendo doesn't want to support the smash community is because of how the community reacts not only to the announcement of any new character that isn't what they want (juts go see twitter and the reaction to sephiroth there are people that wanted sore geno or waluigi and are just angry that he is another sword fighter).
All the controversies in the community that just give it a bad name if you want an example of it just see the drama that happened 5 month ago
And the hypocrisy with in the community just as an example during the smash 4 I remember that there was a rule set that was going to ban bayonetta and the reason it never stayed was because of the pros were many of them said that they wouldn't go if there was a rule set like that but wen here was announced pros were already ready to ban him because of the randomness of his kit
These are just same examples that I remember.
In conclusion the reason why nintendo doesn't want to support the smash community and are doing all they can to suppress it is because they don't what the super smash bros brand being association to a community like this

I do agree somewhat. The smash community at large is pretty toxic. Nintendo also suppresses many of their other gaming communities as well though, ones with far less controversy. The Twitter freakouts are less the competitive community and more just your regular fans though.

@@lavalamp505 I don't know anything about the other commitments so I can't say anything about that
Bu I do think that this is the general idea that management has about the smash community they still want the free advertising but they don't what the game to associate with toxicity like the reputation that league of legends and overwatch has that's why they still let the community have they're tournaments but they don't what the community to get out of hand ruin they're image of a family friendly company or scare the casually gamers to the game
I do want to believe that if same of the representative of the smash community and nintendo representative were able to talk over the problems we wouldn't need to have this discussion but unfortunately we don't live in this hypothetical world
I don't believe that #freemelee or #savesmash is going to work but we will just have to wait and see

@@123mymegamen I don't believe it will work out either lol, if anything Nintendo will likely clamp down harder in response. I do think if Nintendo took leadership of the community, regularly hosted tournaments, etc, then they could keep the image exactly as they want. Keeping it grassroots is what allows random people to take leadership roles and tarnish their name.

@@lavalamp505 it also make it so that nintendo has a scapegoat for any bad beaver that may or may not happen at said events.
that's why I do believe that if anything nintendo with this whole situation with #freemelee or #savesmash they might just be a lot less lenient with dmca in the future.

@@123mymegamen No worries man. I agree with you that the communities behavior has been shitty sometimes and predatory at others. But a lot of good comes out of it and I do wish Nintendo would try to work more closely with it, but I agree with your reasoning.

Nintendo isn't in the right, but the game is nearly twenty years old, full of exploits, and competitive matches are almost completely run on modded versions of the game (UCF and Slippi). If you want a game like Melee to be online, why not do what Rivals did and create your own competitive platform fighter.
The Melee continuity isn't the hero here, and never was. Melee is a casual platform fighting party game that was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the compete scene. Don't believe me? It's the same case with Paper Mario 64. If you dig deep enough, you can make anything cater to a skilled audience.
Slippi is only the way it is because people had 20 years to figure out how to implement online onto the system. The Ultimate devs had 2.
Melee has more skeletons in its closet than the Paris Catacombs.
They aren't right, and neither is Nintendo.
There are two sides to every story. Try to see both.

The mods more often than not improve the game. I have no problem with Nintendo shutting down competitive play. It’s their game and therefore their right. What I don’t like is how Nintendo will use the scene in marketing, promote ultimate with pros but then toss them away the second they are done with them. Ultimates online play is ok at best and usually quite terrible, though this not something exclusive to Nintendo, its a problem many Japanese companies seem to suffer from. I’m not a competitive smash player but dislike Nintendos treatment of people trying to celebrate their game.

@@lavalamp505 as Edward Cole said in The Bucket List: "Boys and Girls, you need me, I do not need you", seems to summarize the situation, the smash community needs nintendo, but nintendo doesnt need the smash community (the competitive one at least) since Smash Bros will thrive with or without it, which makes me wonder why the smash players havent migrated to another game with better support and no harassment yet.

Also it's $10 and thirty minutes of ones time to make a rom of their own game, so the assertion that it requires illegal roms to is literally lying. Furthermore Slippi isn't against Nintendo's TOS, it doesn't modify any game files whatsoever.
In the end Nintendo is lying and being the jerk we all know they are, they're the OK boomer of the industry
