    Imagine being a politician worried about a Japanese game than your own rife corruption and links with mafia.

    As someone who was born in 1990 and actively plays PC games since 2001, I should say that people were much dumber, or "less educated" if you want a less harsh term, in relation to video games. If Doom Eternal was released in 2003, it would have been hyper-banned for violence. Hell, even the original Doom with its pixelated gibs had some controversy back in the '90s. Brutal Doom would've given them an aneurism.

      The fact that games like Manhunt got numerous copies without governments melting down still blows my mind

    • @caliburnblade7895

      Well because they have standards for what they can permit in video games in their respective countries.

    so the controversy was basically: old man yells at clouds.

    • @lavalamp505
      @lavalamp505  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Basically. It completely killed sales of the game in Europe, however.

    I've still got my basically brand new copy of Rule of Rose, back when it had first come out here in Canada, I rented and played it from my local rental place (it wasn't a Blockbuster, and so I'll refrain from giving the name as it's a one-off, but very similar to Blockbuster) and I found it very RE1 on the PS1 reminiscent and such, so I purchased a copy, which sadly, I did open, but I never actually played after as I had beaten the game with my rental and felt no need to do another playthrough. So I wish I had kept it factory sealed now because the value would be insane, that said, as a complete, and like-new copy it would still be extremely valuable today, and one day I will likely dust off my old PS2, gingerly place the game disc in, and relive some nostalgia. The game's sat on a shelf in a dedicated spot with a bunch of my other now supposedly rare/valuable PS2 games (anything from the Suikoden series, shortprinted Atlus RPGs like Persona 3 FES, etc) and it's crazy to think how much controversy surrounded the game and how much it's value has gone up. It also makes me sad I never got a copy of Haunting Ground, which is in pretty much the same boat value wise.

      Wow! I hope to get my hands on one some day, I have Kuon which is my biggest claim to fame but Rule of Rose I only experienced later on.

    Aside from the horror and cruel elements, it does have sexual themes. Mr. Hoffman was a creepy old guy who probably touched some of the girls, Meg is obviously attracted to Diana. All this happened because of Wendy's obsession with Jennifer... Wendy is your typical yandere psycho-lesbian. During those time when Europe was a bit more "conservative" it would indeed be controversial.
    Also knowing Japan they really like their lesbians and crazy people in their Media/ Stories... GL subtext is one of the most popular Trope you'll see in Japanese media.

    You'd think a romantic country like Italy wouldn't get so overworked about these themes, but it looks more like a single demographic voiced concerns. Which is like the Harry Potter haters boycotting Hogwarts Legacy today. A silly critical bias.

      It's not a romantic country, it's a place full of old people that are still stuck in the 60s. There is always some dumb shit that politicians want to focus on, and in the meantime a lot of young people like me either emigrate or can't afford to start a family
