LELIT Bianca V3. Three Months Honest Review
I've used the pants off this machine over the last 3 months. I've abused it, loved it, moved it around, switched from tank to plumbed in. Fiddled with some annoying things and cursed at it, cried and made up, and made the best coffee I've ever had at home.
This is the story.

    I’ve been a barista for 17 years and although I’ve came a long way, the learning surely never stops. I always look to find the next thing I can do to yield that perfect extraction. Personally, even from my beginning days I’ve always favored Arabica Robusta blends of either 80/20 or 70/30. I also, wait 10 minutes or so after grinding my beans before throwing it in the portafilter and locking in for extraction. I used to grind much finer when I was younger which would take longer to yield results but as I’ve gotten older I grind a bit coarser, maybe increase the dosage a bit more, wait those 10 Mins or so, and if on the right grind, a mountain of crema is waiting for you at the end of this process, so thick the sugar takes time to go down. I aim for just more than .6 of an oz (1.77 cl) and no more than .75 of an oz (2.21 cl).

      nice. I love the description - you know I think I can taste that espresso now :). I wish robusta didn't have such a bad name in UK, but people associate Arabica with quality, instead of 'quality' with quality. But maybe it's better this way, and the robusta fans will just enjoy our quality robusta blend espresso without caring what the marketing says.

    • @alessandronoto5688
      @alessandronoto5688 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bartalks1810 Arabica is good for taste but I feel on its own , it isn’t enough to get a traditional bodied Italian espresso. The market has totally changed with 3rd wave and single origin beans , and they are big on milk based drinks. I respect the concept although it doesn’t suit me because all I drink are single espresso’s normally without any sugar and being that these newer roasts aren’t composed of what a traditional Italian roaster would use, the final product in the cup just doesn’t taste the same. Most of the famous traditional Neapolitan roasters usually will incorporate a percentage of robusta in there blend. I wanted to ask you, is there a big emphasis on crema like there is in Italy, In the UK? If so, you should school them on why robusta would help achieve that in their cup and that arabica on its own may not be enough to yield the same results.

    Thank you for your honest review... actually made me buy one, and can say that plumbed in, living the valleys, first consistent espresso I've had since I moved back. Certainly can't get one in any local place around here at the moment. Maybe it's easier to keep clean with hardly any limescale? Even with naked portafilter, little to no mess. I thought the flush bit was visible so that you can see when you've back-flushed enough? Maybe after 2 years, I'll say the same as you, but right now, still learning to get my milk consistent, as espresso is hard to get wrong now. Sage machine this has replaced did great milk without effort, but was massive exercise to get espresso right (should've have got the one with the grinder built-in as have to adjust all day/minute by minute). R58 does everything else that's useful (e.g. warm cups, plumb in, consistent espresso, look gorgeous), but some skill still required, but with grinder combination, espresso has become less of a hobby, and now it's just get my milk skills better. Oh, pre-infusion, just a gentle lift, click might be nice, but not an issue, really. While it works OK with reservoir, just plumb it in with in-line filter for greatest pleasure.

    Both approaches have a right to exist of course, I personally oftentimes prefer the Italian espresso, partially because this is the flavor profile I grew up with. And we should not forget that in Italy, a decent to good espresso can be bought everywhere (Trains, train stations, motorway service areas etc.) for 1 to 1.5 euros, where in most other countries you would get a brown, watery and not particularly enjoyable beverage out of a paper cup and might pay more for it.

  • @SungEruem
    @SungEruem 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Okay, let's summarize. Italians: drink straight dark roasted espresso, with a teaspoon of sugar. 14g:40g+-(without crema volume, just weight. about 1:3 ratio) and about 88+- celsius. it can be waterier than Modern&Specialty's, but it's depth suited for straight drink. Modern: 18g over:36g over(1:2) and about 90 over celsius, and dark/medium/light-various roasting style - somebody loves this 1:2 shot, who loves 'ristretto' acidity and hard taste - but it's depth too tough for most people to drink straight. this shot is suited for Americano and Caffe Latte, Flat White and etc coffee variations. I think each of them has a different purpose. It's hard to say what's superior but Italian's has a little bit of uneven.

    Great review! If you had the ability to purchase the Rocket R58 Cinquantotto for $1,000 less than retail, would the Rocket be a better value proposition than the Bianca? I'm in the USA and I can purchase the Rocket machines with the 110v plug from a company in Italy at substantial discounts to US retail pricing. Unfortunately, the Lelit isn't available in the 110v version, so I would have to purchase that from a US based seller and pay full US retail of $3k. The R58 with no VAT or duties would cost me around $2,300 instead of the US retail of $3,350. That's a significant difference in price. I know from watching your other video that there were some annoyances you had with the Rocket, but if you were in my situation do you think the Rocket would be a clear winner? I can get both of the Cronometro R versions for even less than the R58 but I don't know if I want a heat exchanger machine when I can just get the dual boiler for not much more money and be done. Just curious what your thoughts are having used both the Bianca and the R58. I'm coming from a Gaggia Classic Pro that I'm loving but I'm already getting the urge to upgrade it.😂

    • @bartalks1810
      @bartalks1810 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ooh, that's a tricky one. The answer may lie in the way you make coffee. Is it just you, or does the whole family use it? The Rocket is easier to use and to change settings. The main thing on the LELIT which is a deal killer for me, is the flow control. But my kids who use it, tend to ignore the paddle. So, if it's just you, and you plan to develop your palette around lighter roast coffees, then you might get another itch a year down the road. OTOH, if you like medium-dark roast espresso, or prefer milky drinks, then the Rocket will serve you well. It's also easier to use, so if your family all want to get involved, I think they might prefer it. The final question is over support. If you can get good local support for the Rocket, then this shouldn't be overlooked. Either way, they're both great machines, and a big step up from the GCP!

      @@bartalks1810 Thank you so much for your insights and thanks for taking the time to give me some great things to think about. Based on your comments, I think the Rocket R58 Cinquantotto will likely be the winner for me when I'm ready to take that next step. Right now I'm the only one using it, as my wife is more of a tea drinker and my boys are too young to drink coffee, but every once in awhile she would like me to make her a single shot latte with steamed plant based milk. Steaming oat or almond milk is definitely harder with the GCP than full fat dairy milk! We sometimes have company over that will drink coffee and it would be nice to have such a capable machine as the Rocket at the ready. It's also beautiful. I like to work on my own appliances and electronics, and luckily there is an authorized La Marzocco and Rocket dealer here in my city. If something were to happen and I couldn't resolve it myself, I'm sure their service technicians could work on it for me. I really enjoy medium roasts and so far I'm only making flat whites and lattes for myself. I haven't mastered the GCP process enough to be able to really get consistent espresso shots yet, so I find that milk drinks are much more forgiving. I have a Eureka Mignon Specialita grinder so it will definitely be a good complement to any machine that I upgrade to. With all of that in mind, I think I'm sold on the R58 Cinquantotto! Thanks again for your time!😁

      I'm personally not convinced by the Breville smart machines. My Dad had the Touch, and it was clunky. On paper it should work, but in practice it never did. If you get a chance to try one out, I recommend you do that before committing. An alternative is to buy one used, and then if you resell it, you won't lose much. I do like some of the other breville models, like the dual boiler, or the Barista express, which is a lot cheaper. My friend has a Barista express, and with the money they saved, bought a separate grinder. Hopefully those give you some ideas to think about :)

      @@youtubeaccount7137 all e61's are the same including the one Lelit uses, and that is the benefit - it's old, but simple technology - easy to repair and get parts for. But, temperature stability is important for getting consistent good results. The e61 doesn't do this very well (depending on the use case), and the temperature is measured at the boiler, not the group head - where it matters. So each company uses their own method to estimate the actual temperature when it makes it to the group head - The Lelit Bianca allows you to manually set an 'offset temp'. Many ideas like this just don't work though. Saturated group heads, kind of have the boiler as part of the group - so there's no temperature loss, but the mechanism is more complicated and expensive. Hope that helps.

      I like some things about the rocket more, and there's new machines out there all the time. The E61 keeps the costs down, and the flow control is something that I wouldn't want to live without. Check out reviews of new machines by searching host Milano 2023 and see if there's anything that takes your fancy. I can say that several people had issues with their water tank on the rocket, including me. The pump on my LELIT has got a bit noisy recently, but it's worked faultlessly for almost a year, and we totally abused this thing. If you don't mind it's looks, the Sage/Breville Dual Boiler is a good machine too, and the prices are so good, especially if you can find a quality used version.

      @@bartalks1810 Id never buy a Sage again. It leaked and wrecked the inside in 9 months. Took 3 months to get Sage to listen and do something. I demanded a refund and sent it back. Its chinese made junk and not designed to last beyond warranty. Makes OK coffee if you are lucky. No temp stability, no pressure stability. Grider and dosing sucks. I have bought a Linea Micra and Libra Grinder. Got amazing deal from La Marzocco direct on Cyber monday 15% off RRP. Machine is made from real stainless steel not chromed brass. Makes consistently good drinks although i suck at dialing in as im still learning. I need a simple set up for my gf who just wants easy coffee and this is likely a good option, plus i think will retain good value longer term.

    I’ve found that most cafes in the US make espresso with lightly roasted beans that I can’t stand. It’s gotten to a point that when I read clean, bright, citrus or floral, I want to throw up. I prefer making mine at home with Arabica beans that are medium dark and that have chocolate and caramel under notes. I enjoy a full and creamy mouthfeel. So, I’m really not a fan of third wave coffee. I just don’t understand why they only serve one style of espresso.

    • @bartalks1810
      @bartalks1810 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It might not be the level of roast as much as the type of bean. Try a quality robusta... no wait, before you swear at me, the problem with robusta is not the bean, but that most people sell low quality robusta because it's cheap. Maybe try a blend of 70/30 robusta/arabica from a specialty roaster that does them. You might find it gives you the body you want, with great flavour.

    Thank you for the video. Can you, or anyone, discuss its reliability? The reason I ask is because I’ve had two Elektra SemiAutomatica’s and found them to have regular issues.

    • @nickbaskett3537
      @nickbaskett3537 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a great point. I've had an Elektra commercial machine - the Barium, without any issues, but while in a cafe in Germany, they told me they had gone through two Barlumes before changing to another manufacturer. Reliability might be an issue, although my un-authoritive response is that QA issues are the sort of things that can go good to bad and bad to good in a short period of time. Look at how managers destroyed decades of Boeings reputation after cost cutting QA that led to the Max disaster. So, I guess I'm saying that it's hard to tell, but possibly Elektra need to work a bit harder to earn some trust back in that department.

The way you admire positive emotions V3 gives you after months of daily use gave me the confidence to get up from sofa and get one today ) although it will be a third one on the kitchen but other two (Breville models) are not able (or lets say, I am not able) to get me THAT CUP of espresso you really close your eyes to enjoy the first bit.

Seriously though, it's good to have the feedback, even if it's 'your review sucks'. When we do reviews, we purposefully make them an opinion, because the internet is full of bland inoffensive videos where nobody sticks their neck out.

    Well said and analyzed. I would like to add that although the culture of drinking a café (espresso) is like you described and is true to Italians in general, the blends differ pretty much between the North, Middle and South of Italy, becoming darker when going South. The espresso in the South is often much thicker too. I recommend Specialty Coffee drinkers to try North Italian beans. They are great if you don't like dark roasts. Italians don't like their café to taste acidic. It often has a bit of fruitiness in the beginning in North and Mid Italy but not a dominant acidic taste. Btw, roasters sometimes use specialty rated beans in their blends, but they don't mention it. They just pick beans with a certain taste profile to match their blend with often 5, 8 or more different beans and roast them like nobody else can IMO to a wonderful blend. The Italian price for a café is 1€ but 1,20€ is coming and in the North you can pay 1,50€ nowadays.

      It's true - I was at the italian Coffee event in Trieste last year, and tasting some really great traditional espresso I would say was made to be true italian espresso, but with a blend of specialty coffee in there - My friends at Bazzara made some great coffee with either specialty arabica or robusta beans - OK I"m biased, but it's still true. Thanks @prolNpro for a great market overview.

  • @CH-yp5by

    Quite simply the beans in speciality coffee is more milk coffee and machine temps are a lot higher usually 93 or 94 degrees C and the dose rations are completely different. A traditional single shot is 7g of ground espresso for 28ml thats a 1:4 ratio. One fo the reasons why it tastes good is that if you grind finer you extract more and if you use a lever machine with differing pressure you need to grind finer again which is why the espresso taste better in the south where they use lever machines like the La San Marco. Moreover, the brew temperature is lower at 90 degree C max.

    Thoughts on which burr setts would most accurately replicate Italian coffee? Let’s say you were trying to do this with your Lagom or another single dose grinder.

      Yikes, missed this comment. Well, no really. although yes. Remember the oldest Italian burr experts are Mazzer I believe. They make the burrsets for other manufacturers. They also make a lot of the grinders Italian Espresso shops use. Maybe start there.
