...and I thought I did a good job at being dissappointed ... :) .... very good points.

I figured out the reason for the weight needed in the hopper is due to the design of the bottom burr carrier. The beans hit the bottom plate and then have to travel upward to grind through the burrs - thus the weight of a full hopper is optimal and creating a steady rate of pressure pushing the bean through.
You’ve probably seen the single dosing video on TH-cam - that guy’s from South Korea and doesn’t ship internationally :/ BUT his design used a plunger which can mimic the weight of the beans. I’m working on a similar design currently via 3d printing and I’ve purchased a silicone bellows to test out. It’s relatively easy to bypass the safety switch. I’ll be posting videos in it once I have some prototypes.
Other than that I’ve loved my X54 about a month into ownership.

Thanks Alex, I think you're right - and it will probably help me with my current Eureka setup too. Although I'm probably going to save for a fancy single dosing grinder.

Hi Yamcha111, the video was how I felt about it working for me - maybe you will have a different use case. But I think if you can wait we'll see some announcements this year on single dose grinders from a lot of companies. If single dose is your thing, might be good to wait.

What’s the best home grinder in your opinion?

    • @bartalks1810

really there's so many variables Fabian. Is it just espresso or pour over? Single dose, or hopper? what kind of design do you like? For me, I'm very happy with my Lagom P64, because my needs are just single dose espresso. It's also built like a tank, looks beautiful and is quiet. If money was no object, I would have dropped another $1k and bought the Lagom P100. But I've never regretted the P64. I've heard great things about the Mignon single dose, and my friend has the Lagom mini, which he loves. In the last year, I think we're really spoiled for choice of great quality grinders!

Bad review. I purchased one a month ago and love it. Can't believe how quiet it is and the consistent quality of the grind.

and I know others that like it, but the review title is 'not right for me' (I'm me). The wonderful thing about product diversity is that there is no one right product for everyone. Seriously though, it's good to have the feedback, even if it's 'your review sucks'. When we do reviews, we purposefully make them an opinion, because the internet is full of bland inoffensive videos where nobody sticks their neck out.

Your point on the hopper is excellent. I also buy small batches (12 oz 340 grams). I single dose and keep my coffee store it in Airscape containers. Why would I keep my beans in a hopper getting stale. Great analysis.

I want to know why you’re replacing the Eureka. My guess is you’re after a single dose grinder. I’m asking as I have a Eureka and use it as a single dose grinder quite well.

Hey, a fellow Nick and a fellow Eureka owner. There's two things I'm looking for that I don't get with my beloved Eureka. The first is consistency with a small hopper an only maybe 100g of beans in at a time. I'll make an espresso and my son afterwards will make one and they're different. We can't really explain why it happens, beyond the need for there to be a larger weight feeding the burrs. I don't want to put more beans in, because I typically have several coffees on the go and want to swap them around. The second reason is that there's quite a bit of retention. If I take the top burr off and use my rocket blower to puff out the waste grinds through the spout, I get quite a bit, maybe 3-4 grams? So each morning, I waste maybe 5 grams to be sure to clean it.
I'm not in a rush though, I really do like it. Frankly, it's better than the grinders I had in my shop. I wish I could just switch beans quickly and without retention.

@@nickbaskett3537 Try DF64 I guess. It seems like a good flat burr option. You can always change to SSP burrs down the road. And it will still not get to 1K. Or you can go a bit above 1k and get Lagom P64, which I believe would be a really good option for a home single-dose use case.

@@bartalks1810 my hopper is always empty. I use RDT to kill static and decrease retention to basically 0.2g - if that. I weigh each dose and pour into the hopper with the grinder already running. I give the grinder a few taps on the side when it’s done grinding and lift and close the lid - which spits out a few grinds. Obsessive. Probably. But this is espresso - I’m allowed.

Interesting. I didn't mean to start a X54 hate club, but I think Mahlkonig tried to play it safe, and missed the chance to do something really good.
