ROAD TRIP! France is a beautiful country filled with amazing and ancient sites. Tim and Karen hit the road to visit relatives up in the Alsace and Lorrain region and take in the sights along the way. They visit the amazing first century Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, take in an antique festival in Isle sur la Sourge, sample some nougat, visit a miraculous spring, and much more.

    Very happy you got your Esse! How will you insulate the walls to warm the rooms up without losing the charm of the stones?

      The stones are going to have to do all the heavy lifting. We could have insulated on the outside of the walls but we don't much care for that look. Here's hoping that keeping out the drafts and the almost 3 foot thick walls are "good enough."

    My Kolbert ancestors left the Alsace-Lorraine region in the mid 1800's, not sure what town. Somehow they ended up farming in Minnesota. Rest peacefully, LucyLu. What an exciting life you lived.💔

    don't know if birds, squirrels, and bats are a problem, but you might consider wrapping the cap opening with chicken wire, to prevent visitors from nesting

    I woke up this morning thinking of your wood burning cook stove? Whatever is the status of that thing? How are you cooking food? What are you using for heat. In our Brittany stone house, the first year we used a double hot plate set-up. For heat we used a propane heater, which gave out lotsa heat. But we had a fireplace, that was very inefficient. Anyway, this is my heat post.

    I agree, slap some paint sample on the wall and live with it to see how it changes thru out the day and evening. It’s hard to really see your color variations in the video, but I think I really like your first paint choice!

      Hi Jenny, it's a long story, filled with coincidence and changes of plans... We came to the southwest to look at a chateau that was for sale and while that didn't work out, we very much liked being in "La France Profund" - the part of France that feels like old France. The beautiful villages, wonderful people, and terrific food all spoke to us. Thanks for asking! We'll have to do an episode on it one of these days 🤔

    Farrow and Ball paints are lovely but I had the same problem with their Old White which is green - I do love it but it isn’t white 😂

    You are painting over wood so your color will be different not like painting over plaster or wallboard. Let it dry then look at it.

      Good point. We had put a pretty substantial undercoat on first but I guess it's just a matter of waiting it out.

    Was interested to hear about your neighbour’s response to the Jerusalem artichokes. My French friend had the same response to sweetcorn as corn is considered animal feed!

    Love your 5 Garden tips! My favorite, plant what you like to eat. Are you going to be planting any Berry plants in your garden? If so, Thornless Blackberries are a good choice and easy to pick and propagate🌻👩🏼‍🌾

      It's good to be back on 😘 It doesn't get crazy cold but when you don't have any heat, and almost no insulation, the 30s F is very cold! We are expecting to go below freezing at night this week 🥶 C'mon Esse!

    Happy to see you posting again. I’d love to see the progress on the house, anything happening in the kitchen yet? Curious about how you are heating the house during the winter so you can keep working in there.

      Kitchen is coming soon. Right now, I (Tim) have a portable heater that I run for a bit to take the edge off and a hot water bottle to keep my feet warm at night. Karen is staying warm by being in Florida with her mother 😂

    My grandmother ate Poke salad during the depression which her family gathered on road sides and was often all they had to eat. Crazy but she does love Poke salad. Hau'oli Makahiki Hou you two!!!
