This is so amazing. It isn't IF those walls could talk, it is your listening to the walls talk that tells the story. This is great fun! Hugs to you both.

Love the video guys! Quick question about the old chimney: It looks like it just emptied out into the premier étage, I assume this was to bring heat from the Cantou up to warm the upstairs of the house? But was there any method for the smoke to escape outside or would it just collect below the roof? I can imagine it would have gotten pretty smokey up there when there was a roaring fire downstairs in the winter!

Good question! There is evidence that the chimney used to go through the roof but my guess is that at some point it became a liability due to rain leaking in and they lopped off the top and filled in the roof with matching tiles.
You are correct that used as it was, it would have filled the premier étage with much smoke and carbon monoxide. The smoke would have eventually found its way out via the gaps in the roof tiles but I don't think it would have been conducive to waking up in the morning. 😵

I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying watching your process. I made a little video about our cantou too, as we're also in South West France! Thanks for sharing.

( Maureen ) I have just stumbled across your channel , if I may can I ask you some questions ? How is it possible to leave Hawaï ( is that the right spelling ) to come to the SW France it must be cold for you both , and you seem to have experience in restoring / renovating that old house , are you going to do all the work by yourself ? and where are you living while all the work is going on ? Where on earth do you get your énergie from , I feel so tired seeing all the work that you will have to do , not unless you have lots of money and you will pay for it to be done . I was born in Scotland many moons ago and my grandmother was Française and I have lived in the Charente Maritime for over 47 years and I wish you well and I hope that you won’t think that I am being impolite with all my questions . Bonsoir à vous deux.
