Welcome to RW Aquarium Pages, your one-stop-shop for all things related to planted shrimp tanks! I'm Ray, and I've been involved with aquariums since 1995. It wasn't until 2002 that I discovered my true passion for shrimp. Since then, I've dedicated my time and resources to studying and keeping these fascinating creatures.
My focus is mainly on caridina shrimp, and I'm proud to say that I currently have over 23 tanks dedicated to various species of caridina. In addition, I also have 6 species of neocaridina shrimp.
I'm here to document my journey and share my knowledge with other hobbyists. I understand that keeping shrimp can be challenging, but I believe that with the right approach and a little bit of patience, anyone can create a thriving planted shrimp tank.
You'll find a wealth of information on topics such as tank setup, water chemistry, plant selection, and more. I'll show you what works and what doesn't, and help you avoid common mistakes that can harm your shrimp.

so stable 23° is the key ....
@@lovepeace1953 bingo!!
I have try all that method on your video except air conditioning system, and i must admit, all od that not effective. How about you, do you central air conditioning system? I think, for closed farm of crystal shrimps, that's the only effective method
@Cleeon thats a great comment, central ac is what I currently use and it's stable at 21c for all my tanks
It’s been 104f+ the past week and this week… this is my biggest fear….
@@MoldyBones27 wow that's quite high, a few of my co workers in the states are over 100f also, what a feeling

@@naturesADHD what a great find !!
Welcome back Ray! Good to see your new video. I'm using a portable aircon unit in my shrimp room. I plugged it to the thermostat plug and it only on when the temperature is above 23C to save some power
Thanks for the kind words! That's great you're using a portable ac set to turn on over 23c. Love it, love your shrimp room area
Being in the UK our Temps are moderate. But we can still hit 30c in the summer. I use a portable air conditioner to keep things below 26c if temp rise. Works great.
Thats great, I used to have 2 portable ac units. They work great
I keep my house set at 70°.
@@jeremiahcox4256 perfect temp
I started with 10. After about 3 months, I have about 100 shrimps in a top fin 10 gallon tank. The key to success is an established tank. It use to house baby tiger barbs and guppies for 2 months then moved them all to 40 gallon tank. Most of the 10 shrimps are females which contributes to more shrimps.
@@shellyzama548 that's amazing, you're absolutely right, the more females the better
I dose around half a scoop of bacter AE every other day to my neo colony of 200+. I haven't had any problems but I think having a thick monte carlo carpet helps
Excellent video
2006 to 2014 is 18 years dude not 25 ha. Great videos thanks for the help
great catch, sulawesi since 2006 but fish keeping since 1995, so that's 25+ years
So it is in fact possible to keep shrimp in a high tech co2 tank?
Yes sir you can, just keep it stable
3 to 4 months
Hi. Very interesting. One question? What is in your opinion more important, for the white socks KH PH or EC/TDS ? I mean what do you check more often? Can the cardinals handle some flow in the tank. I have an internal filter (eheim biopower 160 in a 50 liter tank).Do i absolutley need a air pump? Thank you so much.
Gh and kh is more accurate but I use tds and ec more cause it's faster to check
HI. Great video .with lot of information.Do the white socks need a flow in the tank? How strong? Is an internal filter enough or do i need a air pump?Thx.
Thanks, internal filter would be enough flow to be honest
Nice!
Great video Ray 👍
Thx so much
I've got a 10gallon planted tank with perfect parameters for these guys... Maybe I'll go for these guys in a few months if everything stays stable.
That sounds awesome, wish you success
I don't bother with the expensive substrates at all. I do natural tanks & let them cycle through the nitrate/ite & algae uglies to quickly build a stable ecosystem for the tank first. I put my critters in, even shrimp before fully cycling with no problems. If you're having to do regular water changes, something in the tank is harboring bad bacteria. If you want to avoid this altogether, all some pumice or gravel substrate & innoculate it with beneficial bacteria (bought or cultured) in water with a filter for a week before adding anything else.
Great method!!
excellent
Thx !!
Can anyone say Can I keep black galaxy and red galaxy in the same tank
Yes you can, easily

great video! i could not find the aqua reels dark, my spelling must be wrong. do you have a link or a spelling. Thank you!
Yep it'd aqua rio dark or salty shrimp fluvin
I picked up some more tangerine tigers at Aquashella in Dallas recently! They are doing good and I have a lot of blue dream babies!
awesome! i'm sure they will thrive in your care! you'll enjoy them. Blue dream babies! that's amazing also!
Wouldn't you just top off with RO? Wouldn't evaporation leave all the minerals in the water and ph rise a little, then top off with RO would drop the ph back to normal? Also is it safe for the Yellow Cheeks to go down to 78 degrees? And can they survive either Sulawesi 7.5 and Tanganyikan combo buffering to 8.4? I recently have done this in my white Sox tank and they are super happy!!
while it's very true you're only supposed to top off with rodi only, i've been adding slight dash to the water to keep the pH up, it does raise the tds slightly. yellow cheeks to 78 should be ok, i'd aim for 80, I've tried 7.5+ tangyiki combo ad it works quite well. keep me posted
That makes sense! OK I will do 80, thanks again Ray
Hello! Do you ever have issues when using a Sulawesi 7.5 buffer salt and adding Tanganyikan buffer, the Tanganyika buffer wearing off? Im adding new water in the tank at 8.4 PH during water changes and tank PH is at 7.4-7.8 seems like after a few days the Tanganyikan buffer wears off? Not sure why my tank wont maintain 8.0-8.4 PH, seems to creep down continually after water changes. Im really not wanting to do the Sulawesi 8.5 if I can avoid it. Thanks!
that's quite interesting, i don't see it dropping, but i do top off every 5-6 days with rodi with a dash of the buffer and the ph seems pretty stable
I have never seen this kind of shrimp in Australia. Hopefully we will get some soon.
hope you get some too!
I only use it when I do something that can disturb/destroy biofilm. Like after adding a chemical that can affect it, or in low flow environment, higher temps. If I see a sudden change is growth mass of my aquarium fish/shrimp which most are biofilm consumers with some algae, I have to dose. I honestly never use the scoop as a guideline and I dose way less than advertised. My fish/shrimp also get very well fed on other things including powdered "pond pellets" that I ran through a coffee grinder. I think it s possible to feel an overdose of that Bacter AE if you don't have massive microfauna diversity ready to respond to it, like a "new tank" would not. When I first started this aquarium stuff a lot of my issues were because I didnt have that population established and things would keep escalating, the needed response was either not ready or not existant yet. I went out of my way to find and collect microfauna before anything else. But if your aquarium cant produce such things consistantly and provide refuge for them, you will ve forced to learn how to supplement products like bacter ae especially if you have an overstocked aquarium. My journey took me to different issues however, I don't have anything that eats seed shrimp lol, my small fishes all spit them out after trying.
great detailed reply! thanks for this!
@@RWAquariumPages 😧
Hi there - really enjoying your video content. It’s very helpful. I had a question about ph. So how long does it take newly introduced shrimp substrate to lower water ph? I am using RO water with Shrimpy Bee to get gh sorted but my ph seems be staying at about 6.8. Am I maybe just being impatient? Does it reduce gradually maybe? I’m new to shrimp keeping so any advice would be great. Thanks
hmm, with rodi water, the ph does take about a day to lower the pH
When using Tanganyika Buffer, is the pH easily reduced? Do you use it regularly to maintain the ideal PH level?
I use it 1x per week in my water top up
@@RWAquariumPages The confusing thing is that when using Tanganyika Buffer, my ph can increase to 8.2 but after only 5 to 10 hours, the ph drops to 7.8. I repeated this many times, my KH hardness increased from 2 to 5 but the PH remained unchanged at 7.8
@@quannguyenvan124 mine went from 8.4 to 8.2, let me do some more testing and report back
I just bought the Tanganyikan Buffer per your recommendation ans am using the rest of my 7.5 salt. My water here is really soft and the buffer is helping immensely!
amazing to hear! wish you success in your sulawesi journey!
7.5 can be used with normal mixing with water right now need for co2 or any special recipe?
I love Undergravel filter boxes. I use a sponge filter in conjunction.. so when time I dump the media in the filter box.. refill with Brightwell, and put it back in. No issues wirh ammonia spike with that soil and no tank reset! 😊
great combo! love it!
Awesome! Do you think I could use 7.5 with the Tanganyikan buffer for the yellow ears, or should I still got to 8.5. I have cardinals and currently use 7.5. I am lowering my temps to 77 over the next few days. That will make shipping them so much easier!!
Since you’re using Sulawesi 7.5 what’s your ph, tds and gh
Fed my shrimp watermelon and woke up to about 20 gone:(. Water was cloudy too. Never again. Wish I would have come across your video sooner
Sorry to hear that! wish you success!
Hey I see Larry in there ...did I accidentally gave Larry to you .😂
larry come back!
I want to ask about the PH stability of the tank when using Tanganyika buffer? Is the PH set susceptible to decreasing too quickly over time? Previously, I used Seachem Alkaline Buffer to increase the PH level of my sulawesi shrimp tank, but perhaps it did not help my PH level stabilize at 8.0-8.3 for too long. The pH level dropped to 7.5-7.5 after only 1 week.
this is quite interesting as every 5-6 days i will top up with rodi + the buffer, so that might be keeping it up
I can't get this to work at all.. The TDS will be right, but the ph will be too low 7.8 at 160 TDS. The tanganikan buffer will just skyrocket even more.. I get the PH high enough and then then TDS is too high lol.. 185.. So I'm trying CO2. I'm hoping that it works better.
Only way I can get it to remotely work is to use the 8.5 to 60 TDS and add Tanganyikan can buffer to get to 135 TDS and PH 8.1
@@aqualungs77 As for me, I use co2 to dissolve sulawesi 8.5 and tanganyika buffer but my ph is always at 7.8. When adding tanganyika buffer, my ph level increased to 8.2 but then dropped to 7.8 after just a few hours. I repeated this several times but the results were disappointing.
@@quannguyenvan124 I had better success so far with C02. I probably need more than a scoop for the 5 gallon bucket because I'm 100 TDS and PH is 7.8. I'm gonna aerate it longer and hope it raises the PH but this is better. With the Tanganyikan Buffer it needs 2-3 hours to completely dissolve or it will give a false PH because it has to dissolve still and a bunch of particulates going in that test tube to test PH makes the PH look higher than it is. You can get the PH higher and it will stay but you will have to use more buffer.
Can we dissolve salt in water and store in a container for months and use when required I am a big fan of these shrimps Always wanted to keep Booked shrimps for 2 months. Please need suggestions.
you can but before i added a power head to make sure the water is mixed properly
I wouldd be interested to know the ball of what looks like moss, is in the yellow cheek tank?
oh it's just algae!

thx for the update and comments, the only way to lower tds is through water changes with rodi water, slow increases won't be too much of an issue
