I currently have over 25+ types of shrimp, and frankly speaking, that’s too many to focus on breeding quality shrimp as I do this for fun.
How many different types of shrimp do you currently have? Whats your ideal number of types of shrimp in your environment that makes maintenance sustainable. Let’s have a friendly and healthy discussion.
I wish everyone success in their planted shrimp keeping journey, thanks everyone for their support and listening to my rambles

I also keep two types across 6 tanks. 5 tanks for BKK Panda and 1 for Red Wine, with some color mutation variants kept separate in breeder boxes. The Red Wine colony is down to about 15 shrimps. I got them in 2016. It was my first shrimp I ever got, even before neocaridinas. I had a lot of ups and downs with them. At one point, shortly after I first got them I was down to 2 shrimps because I didn't have proper water parameters. I got super lucky and it happened to be one male and one female. Once I fixed parameters they repopulated up to about 400 but now they are back down to about 15 due to a mixture of neglect, exhausted substrate and no light for an extended period of time.
On the other hand my BKK Panda colony is thriving. Now that I have lots of numbers to chose from I am going to focus on maintaining and improving quality. I really enjoy the classic, non shadow, Panda pattern, even more so than the higher value variants like BKK extreme , so I am going to start selecting mainly for that.
btw I got them from SKAshrimps which I see you have listed as a trusted vendor. I agree. Highly recommend.

Sounds like a good start for reorganizing your collection into breeding programs. There are lots of different types of shrimp keeping, but here in North America it is much more about collecting and producing, and much less about improving. Its always good to see more people moving into the improvement stage, but it does as you mention require devoting more tanks per line, and fighting off the collectoritis that so many get sucked into.
For me currently, I really have only 1 project with 6 tanks devoted to it. 1 main breeding tank, 2-3 growouts, and then 2-3 tanks devoted to variants from the main project I plan to expand on in the future (ie. Bolt color pattern mutation variant line, and recessive red variant line). The nice thing about this type of related variant expansion of a project is that they can be used in the future for crossing to reintroduce vigor and genetic variability without having to do a cross with something totally unrelated.
When TB were still new it was common to see a person build out multiple tanks from one original source, ie. they would buy BKK types, which would inevitably throw some bolts and red KK as well, which could be sorted and developed further. Nowadays with hybrids and the marketing from Asian breeders, people tend to just devote 1 tank per type they buy and try and breed and cull and keep them all in one tank (usually heavily planted) and thats just going to be ridiculously hard to do . Keeping them at the level you got them in this situation is an incredible challenge alone, much less actually improving them.

very well written and detailed comment. i really appreciate it. quality always matters to be over quantity. i mean i could add another 20 tanks, but honestly, it wont be fun, when it becomes a chore then it's not a hobby anymore. i might end up downsizing the number of tanks, or i mean swapping them out, 5g for breeding programs, 10 and 20g for grow out instead of all 10 gallons, but we will see where this adventure takes me, thanks for your comment and support! as usual and always, wishing you success in your aquarium and shrimp projects!

Hi! I keep two types and i have 6 tanks to separate the ones i really like. I downsized a lot as i wish to have nice tanks with plants and not just breeding tubs. For now that is what i keep. For fish i have a few old endlers from my previous breeding projects. I love them and they just enjoy their retirement 🙂

That does sound amazing!! You're right, breeding tubs or tanks are so ugly, but on the other hand, I can have so many fully planted tanks haha

Instead of having 3 tanks per type why not have 2 and put what would have been the 3rd best all together or pair just 2 types and see what babies come out? Start some crossing projects?
