Dragline Maintenance Part 2
Over the course of the last few months, I had decided to try get a bit more practice pretending to be a mechanic. The 22RB needed some alterations done on how the boom was rigged. After it was brought back from getting a paint job, I discovered that wire ropes for the boom hoist were touching.
So with the help of a good mate, we re-reeved the pulley block and changed the anchor point back to the side it had originally been when I first bought it.
There are a lot of worn components that still need attention. There is a fair bit of slop in the levers and linkages, I hope to get that fixed soon. Apart from the fact that I managed to overfill the gear case and had oil leak out onto the friction bands, this has caused issues with the machine not wanting to walk and to get the machine to steer is hard because of the play.
One thing I did learn, was that I needed to make sure I blead the injectors properly after I changed the fuel filters, all these fixes have been confidence boosters for me, as I haven't ever done any of these things before.
I hope these videos are helpful to others in the same predicament. Cheers, Adrian.

On Sunday 13th of October 2024, I was invited to come see my friend's Live Steam Scale Model Engines in action at Warner. Whilst working on my Dragline, the land owner had his paddock booked in for some vegetation control. The plane seen is a crop duster that is fitted with a defuser for laying pellets which are designed for killing off trees and scrub. All done with the proper permits, and in this case, it was re-growth that was being treated.

      Hi mate. I haven't had to adjust my rollers yet, but if you look closely there should be shims at the front. You take some of them out and that move the conical roller closer to the circle. The other thing is if you turn the shaft that the roller is on, I was told that they are oval shaped and can adjust the height. You will need a big pipe jaw spanner. Hope that helps. If I can I might try myself and film it. But that won't be for a while. Cheers Adrian. Let me know how you get on.

Then the clutches and brake bands will dry out and start holding. Been there myself too mny times. If they sit it'll have to be done and get the bands set even and not be slipping. I reckon if I can find someone to sell me some track pads it'll help as well. There's no adjustment because there's 2 missing, so she's tight on the pads, but loose on the propel chains. The spare bands I have don't fit, or at least not the propel and swing drums. So I cleaned and refitted the original bands. The direction lever hits the propel/swing selector so there is too much play in linkages and bell cranks downstairs too. It's too heavy trying to steer with it slipping... hope it will come good after getting them hot like you suggest.

They relined with brake lining and about knocked the bins down when they faded out. Ended up with the American and just ran it. Ford industrial flathead gas motor. Wore the gears out but the liquid asphalt made good crater. No more ringing. Spray brake clean on the bands but getting them hot will be best. Powdered rosin will make them bite too but people could get ran off for using it years ago, especially on shovel crowd clutches.. I'd go with the brake clean being a degreaser. It'll be tough digging in that rock. A heavy bucket might help but you'll get tippy with the long boom but it's all a tradeoff. That's a nice rig though. So remain calm and keep the cash flow going. Oh that's ok I was just why the 1772d train had to pull the trip to cunnamulla and not the garret and I was thinking that the garret was to big to go to cunnamulla or maybe if they already had a last steam excursion to go to cunnamulla

    Like with the passing of the _Capricornian_ to a Tilt Train only service, the withdrawal of the _Sunlander_ and the M series cars has left a noticeable hole in QR's Traveltrain fleet. I noticed the _Westlander_ and _Inlander_ services were sitting car only trains, which would make these services far from attractive to the average passenger for long journies. I feel that QR Traveltrain management have dropped the ball here, preferring to focus on their Tilt Trains and the _Spirit of the Outback,_ leaving a hole in train services to Rockhampton and further into North Queensland. Perhaps their intention is to destroy long distance train travel, aside from the Tilt Trains? As an aside, I found 1754 at Redbank recently, partially stripped. It seems her days are numbered... 😞

      We will have to wait and see. I reckon after the Olympics there won't be any money and that will see things fall in a heap. 1754 if it is still being worked on will probably end up with a new maxi cab and 26L airbrake equipment, then head to Cairns.

    Was the staff used for messaging between stations?

      Hi, no it's the permission that the driver needs to ve able to travel from one station to the next. This ensures that his train is the only train that is on that section of track at that time and that he has no fear of colliding with another train. They used staff ticket as a safe working system, before electric signalling came in.

    Hey Adrian, great video. Just a quick question, so I applied for a Suburban Train Operator job with QR, it’s still in progress but I was doing some research in relation to the position and I think I may have applied for the wrong position. I was wanting to become a train driver but it seems I got mistaken and thought the operator position was the driver job, but instead looks like it’s more shunting trains in a depot instead of driving them on the network. Just wanted to double check if this is correct, and if so do you reckon I should stick with it if successful and then apply for a driver job later down the track (no pun intended), or should I cancel the application and just wait for the driver job to come up instead? Thanks

      @adriannettlefold9084 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mate. If it's with QR, it sounds like you have applied to become a Rail Operater which is a.Shunter's position. This is a good position to get into QR and my advice is to take the job and when a guards job or a Driver's job come up you then apply for that position. External job offers don't come up very often and you might be without a job if you wait for them to offer a Driver's position. Getting your foot in the door into QR is the hardest part. Internal people get first chop over people like yourself as an External. Hope that helps

    • @samuelwarrilow407
      @samuelwarrilow407 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So just clarifying, with the shunter job, you get to drive and move trains, but only within the depot itself correct? Or do you just direct and attach and detach carriage etc.

    • @adriannettlefold9084
      @adriannettlefold9084 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @samuelwarrilow407 you don't drive anything. You couple up and detach, you switch points, you do computer work as in train lists, you operate signal panels. You call out trains from the stabling yards and put them into their allotted road when they come back to the yard. Driving is separate to this altogether. Like I said, if you are wanting a job with QR, take any job to get your foot in the door, then apply to become a driver. Otherwise look for a trainee driver's position with Aurizon or Pacific National or Watco

      @@adriannettlefold9084 thanks for the advice, i have applied for PN and Watco, couldn't see any trainee positions with Aurizon. But I'll still wait for the results of the operator job and also keep an eye out for QR driver jobs as well. I have a causal job at the moment so I'm not at risk of being unemployed while waiting, but if I'm accepted in some form I'll go straight into the new job.

    Great units. Sad to see them go. Like classic units in the UK, they've captured many memories in those who travelled on them for so long. 2023 was my last ride in a EMU, No 33

      To my knowledge it needs a lot of work done to re-wire the electrical side. After an audit was done they found insulation on some of the heavy wiring melted and grounded it, from memory somewhere around 2018. It's parked out the back in the workshops at Ipswich.
