As a Railway Brat, Many childhood memories of the Sunlander (The Mail) & the Queenslander over many years, Fond memories travelling.
My father (Bill Rowan) drove the all Electric & Diesel passenger services out of Brisbane including the Tilt for many yrs finally with his last batch of hotly contested Rocky Road Chocolate for the service ladies, he ending a long 42yr career operating the Tilt service out of Brisbane to Bundaberg.
Sad to see a true relaxing experience come to an end.

I'll have to ask Ian Bryant if he knows him. I know a handful of Bundy guys, both present and past. My Dad may have known Your Dad. Kelvin was his name, and he was originally from Gympie.

Great to watch a full shunt and make up of a train for a different aspect of a drivers work and life. Thanks Adeian. The shunts and make ups I did at Box Flat many years ago were nothing to what you did.

It's nothing like a proper shunt shift in a freight yard Rob. Townsville had 2 shunt engines working simultaneously down the jetty, when I was qualifying as a driver in 2002. There used to be 3 shunt engines doing double ended shunts in the south yard, Rockhampton was similar. Carshed shunt at mayne was a very orderly and much much slower affair, compared to Cloncurry, Townsville or Emerald. Lots of lasts and history in this video, glad you liked it.

Used be guard Mayne and then went back to shunting at Mayne about 2004 as shunter in charge then a foreman north panel operator. Was ok time and recognised voice of Jeffery Martin as shunter in the end.

Nice video mate. I stood on Gordonvale station and watched the very last southbound Sunlander go past with a sense of sentimentality knowing it would not come again. I did notice sadly that the 1700 class diesel on the last ever set had quite a bit of rust and worn paint areas and thought QR could have done better.

It is a sign of the times, that money can be found and spent quite liberally on things that in the end have no real benefit, but when it comes to maintaining something that provides a service... the bickie barrel is empty.

Thanks, Mate of Mates! A FINE job all the way and the tune 'Moving On' was perfectly suited. I can hear the 1st 2 notes and know what it is as some tunes just stick and have special places in the heart and I was doing fairly well and enjoying the big old air compressor cycling in and out and the diesel sounding diesel-ish, even though it was a mite sluggish. I always thoroughly enjoyed the D7 and 8 engines with their low speed throaty growl and a D6B or 9U with a straight pipe, even a 6-C and it's turbo whistle. And the old Deltic 4-bangers going by at a HIGH rate and idling. And you doing your job and doing it well and those cars in BEAUTIFUL shape and thinking as the last shots rolled along and about 'moving on' and here came Mr. Shay, a tear drop fell and yes HE IS GREAT! The greatest then, now and forever! Hope all is well with you. We are all still goofy and maybe a dab more. We too are 'moving on'. God Bless, Mate! The BEST to you!

Thanks Lewie. Appearances are deceiving.. She wasn't working as hard as I was trying to get her to, She wasn't reponding when I would open the throttle. And the coaches had rust holes, dints and paint missing on most. All gone now.

@@adriannettlefold9084 Everything has an end. I saw it was slow on the uptake but you just beeded a rope from the throttle lever to yank on and the coaches looked a lot better than they were, obviously. Just yank it to notch 8 and shut one eye and pray a lot. God Bless!

Like with the passing of the _Capricornian_ to a Tilt Train only service, the withdrawal of the _Sunlander_ and the M series cars has left a noticeable hole in QR's Traveltrain fleet. I noticed the _Westlander_ and _Inlander_ services were sitting car only trains, which would make these services far from attractive to the average passenger for long journies. I feel that QR Traveltrain management have dropped the ball here, preferring to focus on their Tilt Trains and the _Spirit of the Outback,_ leaving a hole in train services to Rockhampton and further into North Queensland. Perhaps their intention is to destroy long distance train travel, aside from the Tilt Trains? As an aside, I found 1754 at Redbank recently, partially stripped. It seems her days are numbered... 😞

We will have to wait and see. I reckon after the Olympics there won't be any money and that will see things fall in a heap. 1754 if it is still being worked on will probably end up with a new maxi cab and 26L airbrake equipment, then head to Cairns.

So is the whole Mayne workshops going to be demolished soon?

    • @adriannettlefold9084

Only the buildings and trackage that is in the way of the cross river rail alignment. If you go passed in the train you will see the Diesel Provisioning sheds have already been demolished.
