Thanks for the video. Great memories. I travelled from Toowoomba to Cunnamulla as a 13 year old alone. It was steam hauled, with a PB15 from Charleville to Cunnamulla. I had been left in Toowoomba to finish Grade 8 when parents moved to C. It was overnight from Toowoomba (11pm) and arrived in C at 18:00 next day. It was journey that left a great impression. I shared a sleeper with a stockman who left the train at Roma the next morning. And I went to sleep for the last hour of the journey.
After a Semi-trailer of Ammonium Nitrate exploded on a bridge between Charleville and Cunnamulla totally destroying the Road Bridge and Adjacent Rail bridge, the Rail line was abandoned. ( only cattle and sheep and some general freight). The Truck was scattered over the countryside, and the engine block was over a kilometer from the blast site.
Travelled out to Cunnamulla, Quilpie and Charleville this year. Cunnamulla station has been done up so looks good and has all its history up on displays around the station which is great. Quilpie sadly is not looking so good though there is a small section of the visitor centre dedicated to its rail history. Loved this video, just makes me sad that I am too young to have been able to travel to these places by rail.
There was a couple of other passenger trips that went to Cunnamulla after this. The last one was with 1620 maybe in 2010/11? It was part of an ARHS trip. 1620 I think may have hauled the Westlander on that trip too? There's photos around somewhere on the interwebs. I believe the trip went to Quilpie and Cunnamulla with the M series prior to the Sunlander being withdrawn.
I don't think you watched this video all the way to the end, did you? Otherwise you would've seen the photos and the dates. 2012. I don't know these people from out in the sticks these days hahahaha
@katrinalaw1479 I asked one of the Aurizon Drivers who was in Charleville for my information and he confirmed the normal workings, but if there was others I will stand corrected
And just yesterday I saw a image of English Electric 1620 with the sms sunlander cars at cunnamulla 2010 bound for Roma street so that must been the actual last passenger train to cunnmulla
I was in the north of the state driving scrapers when this was filmed. I still had my blue hat though. I have the return journey behind the Beyer Garratt to edit and then you might get a bit more blue hat action. Off up the farm later this week to go give the 22RB a start and move it out the way. So might be a bit of footage as well. Take care and Blessings to you both.
@@adriannettlefold9084 I thought the 22RB was gone but you might need it if the railway folds. I know that the scrapers paid the light bill for us both but glad those days are over. I liked the rough places but hated a long haul with a passion. And I miss the blue hat. It doesn't have to be seen every time but needs to be hanging on a fence post occasionally. The best to you and surrounding neighbors and birdies, shod and non-shod and Blessings and BBQ's as well to YOU!
@katrinalaw1479 I wasn't on the trip so couldn't really say why, other than the Garratt had a broken lubricator pipe which had to be fixed before the return trip. Perhaps the crews knew about the broken spring before hand as well... I just don't know. Sorry.
Oh that's ok I was just why the 1772d train had to pull the trip to cunnamulla and not the garret and I was thinking that the garret was to big to go to cunnamulla or maybe if they already had a last steam excursion to go to cunnamulla
Very good apart from the religious propaganda at the end. I was unaware the line from Charleville to Quilpie is now officially closed. Mike (ex-Railpage Forums)…”The Vinelander”.
Well done on this video. A piece of QR history that will live on here.
Thanks for the video. Great memories.
