Beyer Garratt 1009 On The Mackay Mail & Coppabella 25yr Celebrations

Now... this video is when BG1009 was chartered by Coal & Minerals Division of Queensland Rail, to celebrate 25yrs of the opening of Coppabella and the Goonyella coal system. The video footage unfortunately only captures from Roma St Brisbane, to just north of Sarina. The remainder of the return trip back via Emerald to Rockhampton, I have added photos taken by Mr Graham O'Connor.
Although quite lengthy, it is a time capsule of Queensland Railways past, and of the towns shown. The train made several photo stops and run bys for the passengers, as well as shuttles for the locals where the train made brief stays along the way.
This trip was quite significant for QR staff, as steam era qualified traincrew from various depots were given the opportunity to work their section of the tour. I have included a list of known men, some now deceased, as a tribute and a kind reminder that it's people that made QR what it is. (If I have missed anyone I apologise, please make a comment and I will add you in this description.)
Also not shown are some of the minor hickups that were encountered along the journey, such as grass fires, broken axlebox spring repaired at Jilalan, and the uncerimonious attach of a 1460 class Diesel on the return due to the bad coal and sparks.
We took kids on this at Coppabella 25 year celebrations. Some great memories.

Were you an engineman Lawrence? Yeah BA doesn't take long to perish does it. They must have got the last of a what was on the pad at the time.
Nice to see more footage of 1009 in her glory days of preservation.

Hi Adrian, again great video I noticed in the Credits that the two Frier Brothers Mick and Peter drove and fired the Garrett surprise I shunted with both of these men and there Brothers Tom and John in Mackay. If my memory is correct there was another brother who was a Guard i met in Hughenden....
Yeah, they were all before my time, but Nigel Hawke gave me a heads up on who worked the Saint Lawrence to Mackay sections
Thanks for uploading this, Adrian, it was good to see the Garratt in steam as we will most likely never see it in steam in our lifetime.

Is it non functioning now? Is the heritage stock mothballed.
@@whitedog7897 if I'm not mistaken 2005 was the Garratts' last run. As for Heritage itself, I can't say for 100% sure as I am no longer in Brisbane, but it appears that all the operational locomotives have been mothballed. The closest thing to anything operating has been a test run for AC16 221A to Granchester, esrlier this year. And then nothing. All trains such as the last Carnival of Flowers have had QR Staff work as carriage attendents which increases costs. The Drivers who had the qualifications would need to do refresher courses and I don't know if there is anybody left at Ipswich Workshops who is actually working on any of the Heritage fleet. Both BB18 1/4s needed new boilers as they had reached the end of their working life or at least that is what I had been led to believe. So that is as much as I know, unfortunately.

I was looking for the standby Blue Hat but read the description and found out you weren't there. Oh well, better next time. Glad you got Ernie Ford in with the 19 tons and probably Kitty Wells in with Lifes Railway To Heaven. Thanks Much, Mate! Keep on running the rails and burning coal or diesel. Thanks Lew. I had gone to work a bit further north near Ayr grader driving when this train ran. We missed out seeing it come through Coppabella by 3yrs, because Dad had moved us back to Gympie where I was born. This was QR's largest steam loco, and used to work through Emerald West to Bogantungan and north to Blair Athol. The line from Blair Athol to Hay Point didn't exist back then. Copppabella started as a Railway town in 1971. Unfortunately for me, BG 1009 had been parked up many years before I Qualified for QR in 2012. I would've loved to had a go. 18 odd shovelfulls every time to put enough coal to cover the firebox. Anyway glad you enjoyed it. God Bless

Hi Adrian. The photo of the train, captioned “Climbing the Hatfield Range” @ 1:29:34 was taken by myself, at the age of 10 Years old on a Kodak Disposable Camera. Currently TrainCrew based @ Jilalan. Cheers.
If you see Bob Sorensen give him a hard time from me. We lived in Coppabella from 1984 to 1993, my Dad's name was Kelvin. Hope you didn't mind me including your photo. I wish there was more footage of the trip and especially of the men who worked it. Cheers, from Emerald.
Great video find Adrian. I think I knew the videographer and If he is the one he is no longer with us. A big thanks to Ian for allowing you to use it. Stuff like this cannot be hidden but put out there for all to see.

What a Great Locomotive, I was one of the Lucky ones who took one of the Very Last trips of this Time being on the Caboolture to Wamuran. Etc. In the middle of an extreme Thunderstorm which I am certain we were public enemy number one for all I could see from the train, I was up in the Cab on way Back not that made me feel any more at ease.
But a Good Trip all the same.

Are you sure it was 1009 that you rode to Wamuran John? I didn't think the line was open in the late nineties? I have seen photo's of BG 1096 on the Kilcoy branch, but that was in the 1960's
@@adriannettlefold9084 hi Adrian must admit that on the Night I was invited up to ride the Loco on what was a Dinner Service Tourism Train the The Trip to course late evening and it was in the Early Nineties so if I wasn't clear on that my apologies.
The Trip was marred by a Nasty Storm for those of us up front but all in carriages I heard were having a great Time, Wonder Why.
I am Certain Locomotive was 1009 but I would stand Corrected on that as I did not take much notice although I heard this Engine was taken into the Workshops at a Point where it was established the Repair was to Costly and so it was sent to the Museum to be a Static Display.
I was told by the Engineer that it was the Final Steam Version of the Garrett in between taking turns left side to check Signal Stance.
Their were Four or Five of us on Deck.
That may have or may not have been her last working but " Again I stand Corrected if Someone could Verify Other ".

@johnwoodall3791 well I am the one that stands corrected John. It most definitely would have been 1009, as 1096 was scrapped in the 1970's. I didn't realise that the Kilcoy line was still open in the 90's. Did you go on the trip to Charleville? I am about to upload the video soon. Perhaps you can Identify the bloke who actually took the footage for me. Any information about crews if you know any would be very much appreciated. BG 1009 has been parked up in the erecting shed at Ipswich workshops since 2005 if I'm not mistaken. It was one of only 2 or 3 locomotives I didn't get to work in my time as a train crew member of Heritage. I have known many old fellas that worked them and heard lots of stories. Hi Adrian.
No I didn't get to go to Charleville on the Train although I have been there whilst at the Pointy end when my Dad drove for Rail, I used to just stay quiet and ask the odd question or two along the way.
I remember when the Westlander was up to 14 Cars Long and we would stop at Ipswich for a 20 Mins. Meal Break before Continuing on the way, My Dad usually did the Tuesday night Train with a 2100 and 1720 Branch line as back up to get us Safely up the Ranges and then further out West up onto the Flinders Ranges.
I do remember that my Dad crewed the Baldwin Steam Locomotive on the Queensland Rail 150 Celebrations I think it was and drive fro Toowoomba to to a Location not far off with a "Y" Junction, What a time for My mind to go Blank in That if the Short Journey It took and returned to Toowoomba but it was such a kick to the People going and coming back much to the delight of these Locals or at least I thought it was., I'll take a stab and say Harristown??.
Also the Pocket Rocket was in Toowoomba in the Form of English Electric 23'S low nose.
My Dad knows so many Drivers and a lot of them still continue to serve to this day with one Gentleman saying he went from the Steam Era to the Electric Tilt Train so almost full circle for him.
By all means I will check that Video out and so will Dad as I mentioned he carried out many tours of duty on the Qldaaa. Rail150 Celebration Train Journeys.
I could sit Their and listen to him for hours about all the lines we had in and around the Brisbane area out to Ipswich and all places West and South such as Warwick and through the Devil's Marbles, Stanthorpe and Goondowindi I believe they were called down to the Border town of Walangara where Standard Gauge met Narrow Gauge.
Went with him on one of the Final Runs to Kingaroy and along the Brisbane Valley Line all the way to Nanango, What a shame I didn't get to see the once thriving Rail Head's in that Area's Working or in Gympie Central and the South Burnett with also the Mary Valley end away up North to Yeppoon on the old pineapple juice train as they called it.
They talk about the Triumph of Narrow Gauge well I don't think you would find a better system Operating today than that of which exists in Queensland.
Loved the Video and look forward to seeing more of them, My Father introduced myself to many Train Crews that they just about know me off by Heart and the Video is So well Documented as well as Captured., If I can't work out who it is then Dad will, (Wouldn't Of Been Yourself By Chance Would It).
I went into another Field of Work all Together but my Love for the Railway's is Non-Relenting and I am so grateful to the makers of Wuikse Train Models and I'm trying to model a Scene from the Busy Rosewood Area and Ipswich where many of those Persons who Recreate some of our Steam Locomotive Models come from and I have a BG in the Collection and looking so much classier than others.
I only wish I had of been born in another Era to that I was because Train's are in my Blood now and Forever.
Looking forward to hearing from you again and I will put something on Air which might give you an insight about myself at the moment.

2800's are quiet in this video. Pretty roudy after the coffin muffler got removed.

Hi John. I think you'd have to forgive old mate for being a bit muddled up, he was from N.S.W . What was your classification in Mackay? My Dad was Kelvin he relieved there as an acting T.O.I in 1992, and was a Driver in Coppabella from 1984- 1993.
Hi Adrian, my classification was shunter/shunter in charge, i started in Mackay May 1974 and during my years service i had more moves than Grace Bros here is a little bit of my history, 1975 shunter gladstone rtn to mky shunter trnsfer, 1976 shunter in charge Townsville 2yrs (relieve 2nd F/Man Mt Isa)1978 shunter hughenden 2yrs, shunter in charge callemondah, then it goes on and on....hope that helps Adrian. @John Byatt Dad was in Cloncurry in 1975 as a fireman, and took us out there in 1983 when he classed as a Driver, then we moved to Coppabella. I joined QR in 2000 in Cloncurry as a call car driver, shunted for 18months then went to Townsville to do driver's school, back to the Curry, then Here to Emerald and went to Mayne prior to the split, now back in Emerald as of 2020. So I understand. Old mate who filmed this seems to have had a habit of mixing up names and places and so if you watch the next one of the BG going to Charleville wherever I get round to uploading, you see what I mean.
Thanks Adrian, I'll keep a look out for it here's a couple more of my haunts (pinkenba, doomben, then back to Mackay where i finished my career ,in all 40yrs not a bad effort(the other day i was having lunch with my Son,daughter in law and grand daughter a guy asked how many yrs did I spend in the Railway i said 40yrs, he said I'll drink to that.) The next day i was told he got drunk as he couldn't believe that someone could spend that many yrs in the one job. John
