22RB Dragline's First Job Comes To An End

  • Well all good and not so good things must come to an end. Over the course of several weeks I traveled back and forth to my mate's farm near Capella, to de-silt a channel leading to house dam.
This gave me the perfect opportunity to learn more about operating my 22RB as well as finding out all the mechanical problems that it has. Although I had spent many hours operating excavators and other earthmoving machines, nothing is quite like a cable excavator/dragline.
This video shows some of the issues I encountered, and some hard realities about costs, work environment, limitations of the machine and practicalities.
I hope to get the opportunity to take her out on another real job, but for now I need to save money... so she is taking a rest... a long rest... maybe a very long rest.

Your Dragline is in beautiful condition for it's age. Great restoration. I drove a couple of these for my local Brick company excavating clay for making the Bricks. It was job I enjoyed.

Good to see the old girl earning her keep Adrian! You've done well for a new operator and you'll be a pro in no time! I just remember seeing draglines as a young fella, in their last days of operation on construction.
    Cheers Gregg.

Thanks Gregg, but this was a love job. I'm broke now hahaha. I she is definitely interesting to operate and I've learnt a bit, especially from listening to some of the guys who worked them before. I don't know when I will get to have another crack at it on a real job, but hopefully I will slowly sort out some of the mechanical issues.... when finances allow. So are you still QLD'er or are we retired to the hills?

There is an additive you get to pour into intake and this laps in the bourses to reduce the polish and oil passing the pistons - we used to use VIM a detergent powder but now they have a proper additive - check it out.

HI, Mate and that was a GOOD one! Those clutches swell when not gotten hot and dried out as you well know. Always something. And as far as the oil leaking, years ago when the first 237 Maxidyne (gold dog) Mack engines came out the company had a LOT of trouble with blown head gaskets. The extremely good wrench man said he was going to try and re-torque the heads. We were talking about it because I had a Wabbit diesel that was bubbling between the head and block. He said he did the Mack's in removing one bolt at a time, oiling it to get a true reading and torqueing it back down. No more blown gaskets and no more bubbles. And I used to have a land cruiser like yours and would still have it if the body hadn't rusted away. TOUGH rig and a sweet runner. an FJ-70 maybe? Looks like yours but had a rag top. Take care and keep on digging whener you can. Boy Howdy it'd take me a while to get used to pushing instead of pulling. GBWYou and CHEERS!

I want a mentor to hold my hand and show me what I need to do and then I can Monkey see Monkey do. Other than that I need finances to be able to fix what is needing repair and make the machine reliable and trustworthy to actually take on a real job. I realised pretty quick it needs a flat pad to work off, which means either a dozer or a grader to help you on every job. And especially for WHEN you get stuck. The machine wouldn't track for me properly and to compensate I had to over tighten the clutches til I pulled everything off and cleaned everything thoroughly. Anyways, got your reply to my email and I don't have a worry to ring long distance with my phone plan. So hopefully try and catch up soon. Cheerio, Adrian

@@adriannettlefold9084 Wished I was there and we'd figure it out together. And as your outgoing thing says that something haywire isn't as bad as it looks at first. And sometimes you just have to walk off and pray and think about it. And you'll get to where you can make your own flat working spot with the machine. Those pads will pack down lumps and bumps nicely. Eventually there'll have to be a set of mats but that's a long way off and if you get a dozer just get one with a winch. A 2-part line will move a lot if the tractor is chained to a tree or something solid. And a grader is handy for road work but won't really pull much and a dozer can do fine flat spots and access roads AND get you unstuck. I unstuck myself once with a 350 John Deere dozer with a winch but the dragline was a small nit with a 2-71 with a torque converter. I set the Unit throttle just under spinning nd then winched it out with the dozer. Never got in that spot again but did have to take a D-4 out and winch the big Unit back on a set of mats after I quit that outfit. Had a Hyster winch and yanked that rig right back on solid ground but I was right next to it. Always something. Cheerio 2 too and you have the number!

I am not expert at operating this machine, but I have managed to cast the bucket far enough to reach where I needed to on the one and only job I have used it for. You are limited by length of drag rope as to how far you can cast the bucket, 25m.

Great video of your RB-22 dragline! Perhaps you can answer a question I have about the dragline bucket. Why are there three chain shackle attachment holes (bottom, middle & top holes) in each of the brackets on the front of the dragline bucket?
I imagine the hole locations allow for different ground penetration, depending on the set of shackle holes used. It seems to me the top holes would provide the greatest ground penetration, & the bottom holes would provide the least ground penetration, because the top holes would have a longer moment (leverage) arm from the top holes to the bucket teeth, which I believe would cause the bucket to tilt, with its teeth angling more downward & into the ground. But I'm just guessing. Is my guessing correct?

@@adriannettlefold9084 Thank you, Adrian. I wondered about this dragline bucket shackle hole arrangement for years. But usually, it seems I've noticed the drag cable shackles are attached to the bottom or middle holes on a dragline bucket (but not attached to the top holes on the bucket), on TH-cam videos of draglines. I guess the bottom & middle holes are the best suited for most digging situations (?)
I look ahead to more of your great videos!

It depends on how far you adjust the clutch bands. They shouldn't need too much effort to latch in, but they are definitely heavier than the feel you get with hydraulics.
