  • Once again I would like to acknowledge John..? For capturing this footage. I haven't been able to find out what his full name was.. but all credit to him. I would also like to again thank a dear friend Mr Ian Bryant who gave me a copy. I hope that I have done it justice editing it. It is my hope that, those who are still alive and well that travelled on board, will be able to look back and see themselves and their friends with fond memories.
The trip to Charleville and return I have broken up into 3 videos, this being the first. This was a re-enactment of What the Western Mail now known as the Westlander, was like behind steam.
This was also a first for 1009, as the Beyer Garratts, never worked west of Toowoomba and were not used for long in the Southern Division due to the conditions working through Victoria Tunnel on the Little Liverpool Range between Grandchester and Laidley on heavy goods trains.
These engines soon found their permanent home base in the Central Division on Mixed goods, Coal and Passenger trains, hauling the Midlander as far west as Bogantungan and Rockhampton/Townsville Mail on the North Coast Line, as far north as Saint Lawrence.

I just want to say, I'm sorry for the Ads. TH-cam is to blame, I don't monetise any of my videos and am very annoyed that they are popping up all through my content. I don't know how to stop it.

You mentioned the blind leading the blind. Well, at least SOME of us see who is the REAL culprit! Thanks, Mate!

Thanks, Adrianne and I bet it was a wonderful trip from one end to the other. I bet also there could've been a bunch of iron laying on the ties because a loco with all those drivers ought to be well able to pop every coupling on a LONG train! Hope all is well with you and the BBQ's are going strong and the knobby kneed birds are crowding in. Was looking for the blue hat but this was before blue hat days I guess. Cheryl sends her love and hopes your feathered pal is still hanging around. We're still here being geezerish but Cheryl got a haircut and is starting to look like a mature kid again. I got one too but just look like the old bald geezer that I am. Stay warm! Thanks again and a Jesus weekend to you! (Us'ns)

Well done to those that captured the footage and to yourself Adrian for editing and posting. Very fond of that part of Qld.
I especially like the old style map 🙂 And a name I recognised in the credits - Max Bidgood whom I met on one of my many visits to the area.

Still got 2 more parts to put up. The Flea to Cunnamulla and the Return BG as far as Laidley. It's a small world hey. I really wish I knew who John is or was. I love how he narrated his adventures. Seemed like a kind soul.

@@adriannettlefold9084 I look forward esp to the flea to Cunnamulla. And surely someone out there knows who John is? I suspect the answer will eventually come thru.
