Welcome! My name is Erica Pashia and I am the owner and head trainer for The Kind Canine. I am a certified dog trainer (ABCDT) and have raised and worked with many wonderful dogs throughout the course of my life. From an early age, I was fascinated and intrigued by animals and animal behavior as a whole. When I rescued my first dog as an adult - who also came to me with several behaviors of concern - I became fully entrenched in dog training strategies, philosophies and how to better communicate with my new canine companion, thus beginning my journey as a professional dog trainer!

Picking up my 6 mo. Frankie boy on Sunday and I’ve been watching all of your videos. These are so informative, easy to follow and put me at such ease when thinking about growing with him as a first time dog owner. You rock!
i adopted a super high energy dalmatian pit bull mix and the first week i was at a loss and felt like i made a mistake. I decided nope im going to learn how to deal with him in the right way. My dude is the most fun freakin dog on the planet and 3 weeks later he was wildly different than he was. I spent a lot of time training him and managing his behavior and now he's so much better and manageable.
Thank you so much for this. I just found your channel -- my partner and I are long distance (I'm in the US, he's in Malaysia) and he just had to inadvertently take in an adult shelter dog. I still have the dog I took in from him when he had to leave the country a few years ago, so now knowing we'll have a second dog (that we'll have to move all the way across the world no less) has been a little overwhelming! Way moreso for my partner handling this new dog than for me of course. I've been doing lots of training research to help him get through this from afar, as potty training has been the struggle, and stumbled across some of your videos and have now been watching so many of them. Our first dog has struggled with some fear and reactivity issues, and it truly felt like what worked was similar to what you are saying: adapting to him and putting him in positions where he feels supported and can succeed realistically. Our relationship has deepened a million-fold just from that, and this video also made me cry from how much it resonated. Thanks for sharing and thank you for all the videos!!
Thank you this is very helpful
On Day 2, 3, 4, etc do you start from the beginning of Day 1 and go through all of the tasks up to whichever day you're at? Or is each day just working on that days tasks with no repeat of previous days?
Once your dog has mastered the task set for Day 1, you move onto Day 2 (and do not repeat Day 1, unless you’re working in a new environment - in which case, I would consider starting back at Day 1 to help with generalization and work your way up from scratch). I hope this helps!
Hi- love your videos and the positive energy of your training. I’m wondering if the first part of this video got cut off? It seems to start mid way thru. This info is super pertinent to our situation and I’d love to know what you suggest before the start point here. Thanks. PS- for me it’s starting with you saying “as your dog settles in…”. Looking for more info on dogs that aren’t yet settled in.
This is cut from our larger and most recent video on how to introduce anxious dogs to strangers :) maybe it would help to have the larger context by watching that one in full! 👍🏻
You are amazing!!! I cried with you. Thank you for sharing this. My dog, my "painting" is also finished and I totally advocate for her. Love from your newest follower, Sofia, from Portugal
Thank you Sophia! The dogs have so much to teach us about ourselves 🥰
Thank you for for talking about treat/retreat! I've been recommending it for years as just an owner, and will definitely be recommending it to my clients once I'm certified. It really doesn't have anywhere near the recognition it should have. I also really like Chirag Patel's approach to first being introduced to a nervous/anxious dog in a small space like a vets office or something (if you're interested, the video is called "making friends with "shy" dog")
My Mal would not care anything about the treat! He would care who got close to me😂😂😂
Functions of specific behaviors are important, and the video that this short is pulled from is explicitly talking about dogs who are struggling with fear-based behaviors around people or who are clinically anxious. Working with a dog who has been bred to protect would look fundamentally different, since the function of their behavior is different than what I am illustrating here. Hope this helps.
I must find that shirt... lol
WoofCultr!
Ill give you further instructions. Stop making videos you wanker.
first
What activity are you most excited to add into your greeting process with your dog?
Great information! Always appreciative to your knowledge.
“People need to follow your directions here.” Not my Dad doing the complete opposite of the training plan he agreed to, completely blindsiding me and which ultimately led to Juno aggressing against their dog, and THEN saying, “Would it have made a difference?” when I confronted him about it 🫠
It’s definitely tough advocating for your own dog and their needs (especially with family) - I could’ve made a whole separate video on that alone. 😮💨
What a great clip. Thank you for sharing such helpful cue giver tips. 💞🐾
Glad it was helpful! ❤️
I just adopted a very young std poodle pup. He is brilliant and independent minded; so, I must up my game to succeed with him. I discovered your channel when browsing for advice about using a long lead for training. What a great find!! The step by step, followed by the demo, is awesome! I immediately subscribed and am embarking on this relaxation technique, the targeted touch and the long lead. Going great so far! Thanks!
Best of luck!
Thank you. My 13 month (?) rescue GSD has been pretty amazing, other than a few accidents and (sigh) leash reactivity. Daphne had a shoe fetish for a while. Found her other things to chew.
Thanks for sharing Stefan! Be sure to check out our playlist on reactivity if you're seeing those behaviors!
I also have a rescue who is reactive. Thank you for your transparency. Thank you for sharing your story!❤
It's a hard story, but it's a common one too! I thought it was important to share. 😊
I just adopted a homeless Border Collie mix puppy and I’m going through of it! My last best friend of ten years passed away almost two years ago and I think I’m ready! A little nervous but he’s learning that truck rides mean “fun adventures “!
In our classes at the dog club, the start of each puppy class or CGC/Therapy Dog class every dog gets a mat and a bowl. It's automatic - they lie on the mat almost instantly, without saying anything and it becomes their safe spot or home base. I usually don't teach a go to your place because so many people just forget to release their dogs from it. This way if they forget no big deal because they weren't given a cue to get on it. Even taking that mat to the vet office, people are amazed that even puppies don't move from it. One of my students even takes it to his kennel when they have to be boarded. I just ask the students to bring both items back to each class as we use them in every class - even if they just leave those items in the car so they don't forget them. Sometimes I make them (and add some snuffle spots on one side) since they are becoming a bit expensive lately. Hope that helps.
All great ideas! It can be so helpful for a dog to have a physical object that they can learn "this is the place we like you to be" and then all good things happen on the mat!
This is a wonderful video for working up to an out of site stay too! Will fwd to my students - TY so much! Hope that helps.
Definitely some great splitting in this protocol - I use this framework for a LOT of things! ❤️
Thank you for the tips! Definitely binging your channel with Vandal 😊
Oh my heart.
Very informative...thank you!!! 😊😊😊
I like this method more and more. I have used Emma Parson's "click to calm" methods mostly in my training as I used to live in Brooklyn and trained in NYC, so there was NEVER a guarantee that the dog wouldn't interact with the object. However, now that I moved to the Hudson Valley, I have revisited Leslie McDevitt's brilliance and I feel that it fits more in this environment. Also - I NEED THAT SHIRT!!
Love, love this video! You talked about all the things I normally tell people to do with their dogs, not just the rescues but, the ones from the breeder as well. They are coming into a new environment with new people is scary. Love, and patience does it. We have to become benevolent leaders for our pups and build a relationship based on trust and respect. You gained a subscriber madame.
So glad it was helpful for you! ❤️ Happy to have you here! 😊
I never recommend taking dogs to a dog park. Most dogs are untrained, their owners don't know much about behavior, and a lot of dogs aren't spayed/neutered or vaccinated. So many dogs get attacked at dog parks. If you go to a dog park, go when there is no one around. Luckily I have an old dog park that never has dogs in it near me, they have multiple areas, a nice agility course and some other things. I go there at the end of the day, about 45 minutes before sun down. Instead of going to a dog park, try group training with a positive reinforcement trainer. Or join a dog walking group.
Agreed! 👍🏻
These arent enrichment ideas these are calming ideas which r great. The enrichment I use is hiding his ball around the house for him to hunt out, we play pass the parcel put food or a ball in a box then put that box in a box etc then tape it shut they have to work out how to get it. Same with a towel put some treats in a towel roll it up and tie it in a knot. Sniffing for stuff should take at least 15 minutes. Teaching scentt hunting is easy and fun. Shaping and especially free shaping is a great enrichment for dogs, it's really mentally stimulating and wares the dig out. After all these u can use licki mats etc tho personally I would never use kongs or licki mats etc. Hope this is helpful ❤
Enrichment is incorporating opportunities to engage in species appropriate behaviors into our dog’s lives. Licking, chewing, sniffing and foraging are all enrichment activities - as are all of the activities you outlined. It would be impossible for me to cover all potential enrichment activities in a TH-cam video, and none of these ideas are inherently better than the other. We select activities that are well suited for the dog in front of us and that help them to feel behaviorally well - and fulfilled. 👍🏻
We adopted 3yo Milo last year, and while he already knew how to sit, he finds - everything - so exciting and distracting. I'd love for him to be able to sit somewhat calmly when meeting people on our walks (his favourite thing in the world), but he's so energetic that it can be a bit too much, especially for kids. So I'll start at home with other distractions such as toys and the neighbours. Thank you so much for the great advice!
A great plan! Break it down into teeny tiny pieces and Milo will be a rockstar in no time!
What brand of high value food rewards do you like? Thank you .

I bought my dog a licky mat because of this video, he freakin looooooves it, he thinks it's the best thing ever
I met with Dr. Overall to get her assistance with my young dog. She discussed the protocol for relaxation with me and I remember her saying that she wants lots of talking to the dog during it. This next quote is from her writeup, and The Kind Canine has included this handout in the description above. This should NOT be a silent process. "Note that you talk non-stop to the dog or cat at the beginning of these programs. This type of talking is not allowed in obedience classes, but is desperately needed with inexperienced puppies and kittens and problem dogs and cats. These dogs and cats need all the cues that they can get. They need the constant guidance and reassurance of hearing your voice with clear instructions. These instructions and reassurances should occur in the context of shaping or gradually guiding their behavior towards more appropriate behaviors. You will have to learn to read subtle cues that your dog or cat is giving and using these to your advantage. You will find this easier to do than you believe. The one thing that you absolutely cannot do is to talk a continuous stream to the dog or cat without receiving the context appropriate responses to your requests. If you just rush through everything you will only stress the dog or cat and teach him to ignore everything you say. This is not good. A corollary of this admonition is that it is necessary to use consistent terminology of brief phrases and to do so in an environment when no one else is carrying on long, loud, distracting conversations."
I think this is a valuable contribution to the conversation, so thank you! And I agree with you - we want to provide support to our animals by giving them as much information as we can and preventing stress and/or frustration in the process of relaxation, especially since these two concepts are particularly antithetical to the state that we’re after! I also think that there are so many benefits to people learning how to be quiet observers of their dog. The more that people learn to listen to what their dogs are saying through their body language, the better they can cultivate their responses accordingly. Trust me when I say that, even though this process is very quiet in its execution with my own dogs, there is an extensive conversation being had between the two of us. ❤️
👍🏽👍🏽 thanks!
How about a rescue dog and an existing dog when you cannot separate them
That can be tough. Think about how you can manage that so that they can’t practice behaviors you don’t want to see. If aggression is involved, def reach out to a force free certified trainer in your area!
Such a well structured video (again)! Thank you for introducing us/me to control unleashed. PS: Where can I buy all these cool shirt, hoodies, sweaters? Love to transport positive dog/training related messages out into the world too.
Hey thanks! That’s Woof Cultr all the way. Get excited! They’ve got a bunch of cool stuff woofcultr.com/
This video is structured so nicely and everything is explained so well and clear. Thank you so much. Wish I could book a training session with you , Erica <3 (I cant because I don't live close to you.)
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you’re enjoying our vids!
Hi! I am adopting the same breed as your younger dog. Would you tell me which breed is that and if there are specifics that would suit better for them to adapt to the new home? Thank you.
That’s Chester! Nia is in this video too and they are both mini Australian shepherds, believe or not! If you like reading, check out the “Urban Sheepdog” book, which has a great intro into raising herders! www.amazon.com/Urban-Sheepdog-understanding-herding-homes/dp/B0CL5Q4DVM
Almost all trainers became trainers because their dogs had a big problem! And they specialized in that problem. You are certainly the best person to understand the feelings of the person who owns one. This is also the most common problem, so it is a very lucrative market. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing this useful and practical advice.
Glad it was helpful for you! ❤️
Oh, this is so good do you have many videos up? I could watch your training thank you again.
This is from one of our longer videos on the channel! It's linked just above the title!
@@TheKindCanine thank you very much. I will go in and check it out.
The dogs in the video look like pedigree collies and not rescue dogs…when this is a video about rescue dogs
My dogs are both rescues and are both Australian shepherds. You can’t assume that a dog is a rescue or not based on what they look like. Rescues are full of purebred dogs, many of them from pretty rough situations. Appearances are not everything.
Thank you🙌❤️
Licky mats just get picked up and carried off to be chewed….yak cheese she loves but goes through the giant ones within a week & they’re expensive! She’s a HARD chewer & it’s hard to find good things for her to chew
I often have to take the time to teach my dogs to stop engaging with lick mats as soon as the good stuff is gone! 👍🏻 I supervise them every time I give them for several weeks, and trade them for it when it is finished - before they start to chew! After a while, this becomes a regular habit. If your dog is a heavy chewer, you might consider something like beef cheek rolls! They are fully digestible and a great alternative to rawhide. They are also significantly cheaper than yak cheese chews, as well as more durable!
HI I LOVE THIS!! I'm currently on day 3 and I love it, I'm doing it because my 1 year-old dog as some difficulties on relaxing. Is there a specific moment of the day in which we should do this? Like as soon as he wakes up, for example? I kind of realized that my dog can't stay relaxed as soon as he wakes up, this means that he wakes up at 6 am wanting to play, does it make sense id I try to do it when he wakes up to help him stay relaxed in those moments? thankssss :)
Good question! I'd say to do this when you can get the most success out of it. Maybe this could be a good thing to do after a good long walk so that you're getting a dog that is primed for relaxation. You certainly could do this at more active times of day as well, but you're kind of swimming upstream if you will. Go deep first, then broad. Meaning, get success on multiple days first before you try to generalize this to other parts of the day or in other locations! The skills will transfer to those other situations more quickly that way!
@@TheKindCanine thank you so much!! ❤️❤️

Water cookies sounds so fun. I’ve given my dogs ice in the past (which they loved), but calling them water cookies is an extra dose of fun ️
Gotta take the cute when you can! 🥰
Where’s day 11-15? We have been following it while we practice with our dog. It’s so helpful watching you do it.
Glad you’ve enjoyed it. We do need to get through 11-15 for y’all. It’s a bout time I think 😂
Yes please. We're up to that point now @TheKindCanine
3 months later, any hope of part 3 soon? 🙏
Appreciated how you linked various activities to dogs' natural behaviors. That was very enlightening! Thanks!
