  • We have been on quite a journey with our reactive dog Nia! From leash reactivity to all the training we did before trying positive reinforcement dog training, it's been a wild ride.

    oh my gosh, this story came just in time for me, recently having adopted a rescue dog with many issues. I am going to listen to it whenever I get frustrated or afraid of what could happen. You are the only dog trainer I have ever respected. Your story and advice had me in total tears fighting back sobbing. Thank you for saying that it's OK to treat every dog like an individual and that there's not a one size fits all in training dogs. Huge blessings to you, Nia, and all of the dogs and people you work with. I only wish you lived in my town😊

    We took in our rescue in Dec 2019 and so many of the things you told resonate with what we went through with him. We adapted to him. Not going out much with friends, he's never alone for a long time (also bc of his stomach issues that can have a suddlen flare up), living more remotely. Sometimes it's hard but I'd never in a million years choose a different life. I would give everything up for him.

    You rock! You're a role model to reactive dog owners like myself for not giving up on Nia. I'm determined to do the same and change my dog for the better.

    Thank you so much for this. I just found your channel -- my partner and I are long distance (I'm in the US, he's in Malaysia) and he just had to inadvertently take in an adult shelter dog. I still have the dog I took in from him when he had to leave the country a few years ago, so now knowing we'll have a second dog (that we'll have to move all the way across the world no less) has been a little overwhelming! Way moreso for my partner handling this new dog than for me of course. I've been doing lots of training research to help him get through this from afar, as potty training has been the struggle, and stumbled across some of your videos and have now been watching so many of them. Our first dog has struggled with some fear and reactivity issues, and it truly felt like what worked was similar to what you are saying: adapting to him and putting him in positions where he feels supported and can succeed realistically. Our relationship has deepened a million-fold just from that, and this video also made me cry from how much it resonated. Thanks for sharing and thank you for all the videos!!

    Thank you for this video Erica, I cried right along with you. Knowing what you have gone through with Nia and knowing how much you love her and would do for her, makes me realize how lucky we were to find you to help us with Neo. Neo is doing so much better because I am able to manage our home life better. I am doing nose work with him now which he is taking to quite well. Thank you for everything you do!

    Beautiful video that made me cry. You could have been talking about your own child with behavioral/learning differences. And that is exactly how I see dogs, as small children. Each dog has different personalities, moods, and triggers. I try to understand them and respect them. They know when we love them and trust them, and they'll give us everything in return. They can teach us much more than we can teach them.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We have found so much overlap between young children and dogs! And don’t get me started on the similarities in how we approach reactive dogs and neurodivergence! The details are different, but many of the foundations are the same!

    Thank you so much for this video. I am still crying while typing. Nia is like my dog. I am so sorry for you to go through all these different methods of (quick) learning which can be so harmfull. I was lucky to come across my first dog trainer who has the same style as you have. But unfortunately that hasn't resulted in the happy end we woulk like to happen. I think I have to accept him (like you said so beautifully) in the way he is. I suspect his fears are genetically (also because I learned his mother was very anxious) and not only because of his first year of being abused. I even came at a point that I thought I have to learn him the wrong way. To get him more obidient. Lucky for me I came across your so intense and honest video.

    Thank you for sharing....I was crying the entire time as this sounded like my little angel as well. It's definitely going to be a journey for my girl and I'm hopeful that I can also be an advocate for her. For now, I have managed her environment by not taking her to the dog park during off leash hours, enjoying the solitary walks when its raining (less dogs during this time...lol), and realizing and accepting that perhaps she will never be a "dog park" individual.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is such a difficult realization, but I have always found comfort in knowing that I’m giving my dog what she ultimately needs. She wouldn’t ever enjoy the experience of a dog park - it would be extremely stressful for her, so I give her things that DO fill her cup instead. ❤️ You’re a wonderful dog guardian for taking your dog’s individual preferences into account.

    I am so, SO sorry about your awful experience with that training session. You put yourself out there and were vulnerable, and your (and Nia's) trust were broken. I still want to change my dog: I want my dog to be confident, healthy, and happy. To change my dog I have to change myself and my expectations first, drastically! But that doesn't mean that every day has to be a struggle, has to be a success, or has to go as planned. Burnout is SO REAL. And everyone's journey, and destination, are different. Management is a perfectly fine lifelong solution for some people and dogs. For me, there are certain goals I am still working towards whether I make it there in the end or not, and there are other goals that my dog and I are fine to never tackle. Thank you for your vulnerability and for sharing your experience with Nia! I hope you will continue to put out information and tutorials to help dogs and their people build confidence and resilience!

      I just want to say - your response has me feeling so uplifted. Thank you for this much needed validation. You’re right on the nose with your goals of wanting your dog to feel healthy, happy and confident - that’s all I really want for Nia (and for myself, too). ❤️

    Wow… I’m in shock. I really thought I was such an anomaly. So much of your story just resonated with me it’s unreal. I also have an Australian Shepard who is very reactive. Between the stresses I have just in my fast paced life and the stresses like you talked about of not being able to socialize my pup. I tried online courses and trainers. The idea of not being able to “fix” him became overwhelming I started to neglect him and myself, I became angry and impatient. With all of the noise of everyone telling me what I need to do and how I need to fix him, it was so hard to hear all of this because I know my dog more than anyone, I see how every little part of his day plays out and how everything in his environment effects him. I’ve contemplated giving him up many times and everytime I contemplate this I just feel like I’m not doing what it is that I want, I’m doing it out of shame and guilt. It’s even harder when I know who he really is, I know how intelligent he is and loving. I am glad to have watched this and I haven’t checked you channel yet but I hope you have more . Thank you for this!

      @TheKindCanine  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is a story that plays out over and over again unfortunately. Kudos to you for navigating through a challenging situation and getting out on the other side! It may never fully resolve (do us as humans ever “fully resolve” either?) but you can get to a place of acceptance.

      If you watched the video in full, you would see that the message far extends beyond “this is what training did for my dog”. This isn’t about discussing training methods or working with reactivity at all. I have other videos for that. This is about a complicated and complex journey with my own dog and how I came to the place of loving and accepting her for who she is.
