    This is our number one "issue" with our rescue dog that we have had just 6 months now. She spent her first year in a crate, in a larger kennel in a warehouse with 200+ other dogs and she is highly reactive around ALL dogs. This is very hard in our dog friendly condo and on our busy dog path with many dogs being walked every day. What I have been doing is the turning her back to the coming dog and using the "look at me" command which "sometimes" works." Sometimes I can cross the street or turn and go the other way...nothing works in every situation. And we have been written up by our condo board......Thank you!

      Aw Donna, that's no fun with your condo board. Sounds like you're on the right track! I love that you're creating distance and giving your dog space! The key with that is to do that before the dog is uncomfortable. It's all about keep that bubble of personal space un popped! Dogs have bigger personal space bubbles than humans do!

      Hi, I had the same issue with my dog and eventually moved out of my condo. But I found this wonderful ONLINE class that teaches the kind methods explained in this video (Leslie's Control Unleashed). Look up Wholistic Hound Academy in Alexandria, VA. The class "Control Unleashed" is under "Specialty Classes and Workshops". We are on our third week of this class and I've learned a lot of kind, positive ways to help my dog learn as I'm learning too.

    I like this method more and more. I have used Emma Parson's "click to calm" methods mostly in my training as I used to live in Brooklyn and trained in NYC, so there was NEVER a guarantee that the dog wouldn't interact with the object. However, now that I moved to the Hudson Valley, I have revisited Leslie McDevitt's brilliance and I feel that it fits more in this environment.
    Also - I NEED THAT SHIRT!!

    I just took on a 10 year old Shepherd/Husky who is absolutely wonderful and great with my cats. Best dog I've ever had to deal with. But when she sees another dog, she goes insane. She is not food or toy or praise motivated. She does not respond to clickers or whistles. Nothing, and I mean nothing helps her get through seeing another dog. It's almost impossible to control her when she sees another dog. I can barely keep my arms in the sockets and it has come to the point where we will no longer be going on walks. I have watched countless videos and all them show the exact same thing. Feed them a treat. She does not care for a treat. All she wants to do is bust out of her harness and rips off my arms to do it. It's so painful to walk her now - I go late at night and with winter coming, we won't be able to do that either, just to avoid possible dogs. Other than this, she is perfect. I don't know what to do anymore and this means she can not go on walks. It makes me so sad to see her wanting to go out to walk, but is confined to my back yard. Since all videos talk about the same thing, treats to change the behavior, my poor girl is doomed to run around in my yard and never go for adventures beyond.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not about the treats, it’s about closely monitoring threshold and utilizing the appropriate amount of distance - gradually working your way closer to dogs as she starts to feel more comfortable and has started to code an alternative behavior. Highly recommend you watch our other videos! Reactivity is a LOT more complex than just feeding your dog treats when they see dogs. 👍🏻

      Also, if you aren’t already considering working with a qualified, in person, force free professional, I would highly recommend it. You can find someone in your area on the pet Professional Guild (PPG) website database or IAABC. They can help you parse out the details. Like I said, reactivity has a LOT of moving pieces - and it’s hard to isolate it all into one (or even a few) videos!

      @@TheKindCanine Thank you for the comment. I'm not giving up on her, but I have to find a solution. My arms and shoulders cannot handle her strength. I am trying to understand her behavior and I'm going to give a "fake" dog a try (I just bought a stuffed dog today) to try to keep it safe. Maybe this is the best way to get her to rein in her reaction. Otherwise she's the perfect dog! I won't give up. Thank you again for answering :)
