      We had our rescue dog on Sunday . She came into the house and peed in the rug , went into the garden and did a number two , came into the house and ate a bowl of food . She then found her bed and toys and immediately made herself at home . Day two ( full days ) she has had a day of no accidents and is so good . She demands to sleep in her bed in our room but that’s ok . She lay on the bed today and was in heaven . The look when she was moved to her own bed was so funny . It’s like she has always been here . We know we have been so lucky with her .

      We rescued a 3 month old boxer puppy, she seems to think she must potty on a hard surface, such as concrete or inside. How do I help her understand she can potty on the grass?

      I did I just adopted a senior chihuahua from paws and pixes rescue. He is a tiny fellow. These tips were helpful. I am letting him get used to his surroundings. Question, how can I get him to use the bathroom outside? When he was in foster he got used to using the pads to use the bathroom on, I wann change this behavior if I can.

    I adopted a 3 year old dog who had 3 previous owners plus the kennel stays in between. He was highly anxious and reactive at first, and most of the people i knew told me to return him to the shelter. But I paid for a dog trainer and she was amazing. She told me honestly that it could take between 6 and 12 months before he started showing his true potential, but she also saw how much he was willing to work with me. 15 months later, nearly EVERYONE who knew him before comments about his gentle nature and how obedient he is now. It wasn't easy getting to this point but I believe it was really strict boundaries (consistency, not punishment), and tonnes and tonnes of positive reinforcement that got us where we are now :)

      I know I'm a year late but I want to say congratulations on sticking with your pup and also thank you for saving him. We saved an anxious reactive dog 10 years ago we trained and managed him but his anxiety would never be able to be completely gone and that was okay. We kept him safe and loved and rescued him from a kill shelter. He turned out to be so loving and amazing everyone loved him he just didn't like dogs and that was okay with us. We just lost him two months ago and we are in the process of saving another that is on the euthanasia list with similar issues. Already have a trainer on standby hoping we can get even further this time with the experience we have from my first boy and soul dog

    Adopting a rescue dog can be really challenging but it's also very rewarding.
    My mixed breed Yorki is 8 years old and he was never trained and socialized. It took me 5 weeks to make him understand that the living room is not the place to release himself. During the first 2 weeks we went outside every 2 hours. A few times I had to get up at 3 am and take him out (minus 17 degrees)! Patience and a lot of positive reinforcement was neccessary to overcome this behavior. 14 months have passed and he has settled in. It takes time to integrate a traumatized rescue dog in the family.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Love it! Yes, patience and some understanding is really key. The more we can consider our dog's experience as they navigate the world, the better. We are their key to a larger, happier world!

      Woah I sure hope you mean Celsius. The world needs more people like you. Thanks.
      Edit: do you have fenced yard? Because I would not feel safe going out at 3 in the morning... All these things discourage me from getting a dog and I end up just volunteering at a shelter.

    Can you do a video talking about adopting a dog that was rescued from a hoarding situation? I very recently got a little guy who was recently rescued from a house hoarding situation of 150+ dogs. I’d appreciate tips on how to teach him to play w/ toys, how to open up to affection, and how to learn to and be comfortable walking outside. He always hides/lays in his bed.

    • @margarettaft7362
      @margarettaft7362 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My advice He’s new. Leave him alone Let him come to you. If You really want him to play with you, just start by rolling a ball for him to chase. What breed is he? Some dogs have been breed to be needy clingy and emotionally dependent on owners. Others have been bred to be self sufficient. Best thing let him alone and let him come to you when he wants to. Most important get him a crate and put it in a very secluded place. Not in the. living room where most of the action is. We had a crazy rescue dog and she established herself in the playroom behind a partition. Only came out for food. And ignored the nice comfortable bed in the living room. If your dog is not a needy clingy be glad. It can be very annoying to have a dog who never leaves you alone. It will be fine. The dog will come to you. .

      @@TheKindCanine What is “expert force free training”? I have a rescue from a hoarder that had 40+ dogs and he has not let me hold him yet (outside of his bed -// he will let me pet him there) but cries when I leave for an errand.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@scottguffey5809 You can search the Pet Professional Guild or the IAABC database on their websites. “Force free training” is a modern, science-based style of training that focuses on the welfare and wellbeing of dogs, avoiding training strategies which elicit fear, anxiety, pain or stress. In addition, these two organizations have ethics statements that trainers have to sign upon joining - and the trainers are often multi-certified or hold higher level degrees in animal behavior.

    THIS IS TOTALLY HELPFUL! I just adopted my first rescue dog four months ago, a SUPER HIGH ENERGY 1-year-old Lab/Staffordshire terrier. I am age 71 and my husband is age 76 and while we have trained Labs before this is a totally new situation. I have never had such a vocal dog before so it took me a while to understand what she was telling me. I began with basic commands; sit, stay, come, no, wait, leave it etc. Ginger is very smart but also came highly stressed as she had never lived out of the crate her first year, had never been in a car, on a lead, up the stairs etc. I have spent the first four months acclimating her to our busy dog friendly condo, the bike trail where runners, dog walkers, bikes, scooters and more. Our challenges now is barking at our neighbors as they come and go on the common hallway and barking and growling at other dogs. I have a trainer coming next week to assist me with those skills.

    I liked the idea of having mini treat jars around the house for when we see good behavior to reward. Great tip!!

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s always helpful to make rewarding behaviors more accessible! If you set up your environment with treat jars, you’re more likely to reward behaviors more frequently throughout the day rather than letting them go unnoticed! :)

    Thank you so much for this😊 I just got a 2 year old rescue dog from egypt yesterday.
    He has been on a long plane ride to Denmark and arrived 2 days ago.
    He got all his health checks, vaccinations and blood work when he arrived.
    He was teased as a pup by a group of kids and got removed from that home when he was an older pup.
    After that he lived in an apartment/balcony with 19 other dogs.
    So far he has been such a good boy and hasn’t had any accidents inside.
    He is nervous and has small periods during the day where he is shaking🥺
    He is very curious tho and loves to follow my every move.
    He is a bit nervous when I pet him.
    But I see progress.
    I try to give him his space.
    He naps infront of me and gets spoiled rotten with treats toys and praise everytime he does good things.
    I really hope he will soon start to see that being here is not so bad after all☺️

I couldn’t separate them. Now I am trying to learn how get them to trust, as they both have never been in a home. They move away if I try to touch them. Your video has helped me a lot. I feel very lucky to have adopted a puppy who had experience in foster homes. Aside from a 3 week stay at the vet, she split the last 4 months in two different foster homes. She's seemed to transition to life with me, my boyfriend, and our other dog very smoothly. It's day 6 today, and she is settling in and more of her personality is coming out, but she hasn't been nervous or a troublemaker at all!

    Love, love this video! You talked about all the things I normally tell people to do with their dogs, not just the rescues but, the ones from the breeder as well. They are coming into a new environment with new people is scary. Love, and patience does it. We have to become benevolent leaders for our pups and build a relationship based on trust and respect. This video is a Godsend because I had/have no idea what I'm doing and I myself grew up in bad situations so I too have trauma so I'd assume he acts certain ways cus he against me or whatever and it's so helpful for me to understand him better cus sometimes I get in my emotions and take it out on him or if he does one thing wrong I get upset when I shouldn't. I wanna be better for him 💜 I wasn't fortunate enough to grow up with dogs but this is so helpful he is doing great and he's just such a blessing I couldn't imagine my life without him he's my only family
    I have to remember that he doesn't think like I think.

    Thank you for this very helpful video. I just took in a rescue pit-bull mix who was completely emaciated. Not sure of the circumstances, but she was absolutely pitiful. Contrary to the stigma, this sweet girl is as kind and docile as you could hope for and is incredibly loving. We are following each of your tips and so far, so good. My other fur baby (also a rescue) has been an only-dog for about 5 years, so she's having a bit of an adjustment period. Hoping the two will eventually be the best of friends.

    As far as white noise goes, my parents dog loves Star Trek, but only TNG. I realized she really liked the Data centric episodes, which made perfect sense given Data's calm tone and lack of strong emotions.
    Now when she comes to visit Im sure to put TNG on, and she will actively sit in front of the TV, even if it means coming into a different room to watch. Shes a trekkie. Lol

    Thanks for all this valuable information as our new rescue is being spayed today
    and tomorrow we get to bring her home. I just hope the vet gives us something
    for pain for a couple of days because our last fur baby was neutered, and he gave
    us nothing for our boy for pain.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always ask! I’ve never met a vet that isn’t willing to prescribe something for mild sedation or pain after a procedure like that. Especially a spay, since it is much more intrusive and has a longer recovery than a neuter. ❤️

    Hello. We rescued a 10 year old chihuahua from a shelter. Most likely a puppy mill dog. ZERO training! Not housebroke at all. Winter in Chicago area ... not so fun for a chihuahua. I have had success taking out to potty and a reward of white meat chicken but she still has not quite connected the dots! I also bought indoor grass but this is also completely foreign to her. She is very sweet and not nervous at all with me but runs away form my husband. I am sure it will take time and consistency on my part. She only has about 4 teeth ... the puppy mill took zero care of her. She was only spayed after being surrendered. Came from Texas to IL to a no kill shelter. Anyhoo ... she is a sweetie. Thanks for all and any time. She is in a large create with her fuzzy bed and food/water dishes. Not much interest in her small stuffed bear. She LOVES to eat!!! I am thinking with only a few teeth bones would be a bad idea. I'll have to look into the toys for treats to entertain her. She has pretty good energy and is being treated fro heart worm ... in 30 days she gets her shots for the heart worm. Take care everyone.

    We just rescued at young boxer(estimated 9-12 months) The 1st week has been pretty good, but he didn’t do well with his third crating session. He broke out of the crate, countered surfed, but the funny thing was, he only took his and our snacks and piled them up on the couch and laid there and guarded them. Never even tried to eat any of it. We nicknamed him Duke: Protector of the Snacks. We will go back to basics on the crate, and work on the separation anxiety. I really enjoy your videos! Very informative for a first time rescuer!!!

    Thank you so much for this video. I am getting a new dog next week. He isn't coming from a rescue or shelter, but it is being rehomed by his owner who feels it's important that he is with someone who is home all day. Even so, he is coming into a new home, suddenly made to live with strangers, still going through an adjustment. This video is just overall helpful and I appreciate it.

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very cool! And whether it's from a shelter or a rehome, this is really about acclimating a dog to their new environment! It's geared at those dogs that may have come from a potentially stressful shelter environment, but even if not, all these techniques will still work well!

    Thank you for the video! I have watched many videos and done a lot of research but things didn't go quite well. We can't get the dog inside. We have a small yard (but there is wood instead of grass if that makes sense) and she likes it better over there, pluss it is better for us since we also have a rescued cat indoors and she can get quite agressive and cause commotion. Pluss our indoors aren't very suitable for dogs i guess since she can't play freely and bumps into walls and desks all the time. Is it ok for the dog to live outdoors and what adjustments should i make if she will stay in our yard?

    • @TheKindCanine
      @TheKindCanine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is really dependent on a lot of factors, excluding extreme heat and cold in your area. While outside time can be a treat, having someplace inside to sleep and feel safe is real important. But it is ok to take the time you both need to get to that point!

    I just rescued a 7-year-old mini Poodle who has only three legs and 5 teeth. (I've had him for 6 days) He wasn't treated very well in his previous life, and the vet convinced his owner to surrender him, and then she did all the medical work he needed and he went to his foster. I have him now, almost a week, and he is so lovey, I adore him and want to give him the very best. I have been using the clicker and in just a few days, he responds to his name, come and no. And sometimes off, but not always lol We go to bed around 10-11, he sleeps all night til around 7AM, we go out, all is well. The issue I am having is house training. He does not want to go outside, at all. It's cold and snowy and he hates it. He will just pee wherever he wants inside. Although I work from home, I don't always get to him in time. It was suggested to me that I keep his leash on all day so when he starts circling and sniffing, I can take him right outside. What do you think? I have pee pads now and really hate them, and he doesn't always go to them anyway. I also bought a training fence like you have in this video and thought I might make the inside of that the place where he uses the pee pads but I just don't want that. I don't want to use them at all. I'd love your thoughts!! Cheers from Nova Scotia!
