Ali Lives Well on Less
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 พ.ค. 2012
Is it possible to live well on less money? Absolutely! I retired early from teaching in 2023 at age 57 and now live well on a teacher's pension of around £9K a year. This is a reduced pension due to many years of part time teaching while raising my family. I have 9 more years until I get my State pension at age 67. It has taken me 14 years of frugal living, planning and saving to get to this stage. In May 2024 I made the huge leap to downsize my home. I bought a small 2 bedroom house for myself and a 2 bedroom flat for a family member. I enjoy DIY and making things from not much money. I usually try to grow as much food as I can although this year has been a write off due to moving house. Join me on my journey and I'll share my frugal and simple living tips and tricks along the way!

Changing my budget (slightly) for February
มุมมอง 4.8K14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today I'm talking about some changes I've made to how I work out my budget and tell a story about teachers spending their own money for their classrooms. Here's the link to the video I mention where I saved money on my car insurance th-cam.com/video/psA6xv_Nr3E/w-d-xo.html
Part 2 - becoming consciously frugal in 2025

Part 2 of my wee mini series on becoming consciously frugal. I'm sharing details from an old notepad as an example of the frugal spending habits I developed over many years in order to be able to retire early.
A freezer audit, some unusual bananas and my February supermarket challenge
มุมมอง 3.8K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
My freezers were due an audit and overdue a defrost so I'm on a mission to use/eat everything even if I'm not that keen on it. Plus I've accepted a supermarket challenge from my friend for the next month!
January spending and things I learned about making donations

January blues and avoiding over spending to cheer ourselves up
มุมมอง 5K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
We're now into week 3 of working towards becoming more consciously frugal and it's tempting to spend money to make ourselves feel better. I'm planning a shopping trip this week but have taken steps to make sure I don't overspend!
What I did with my £1.50 Lidl box of fruit and veg

What I eat in a week on a tight budget
มุมมอง 5K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
As requested here is my video on the meals I ate in a week. Obviously I'm not a doctor or dietitian so I'm just sharing what I do. I practise Time Restricted Eating (TRE) and normally eat 2 meals a day plus snacks if I'm hungry within a certain time window. I find this greatly helps with my digestion as I've suffered with IBS in the past plus some wheat and dairy intolerances and post menopause...
How I track my spending and how low spend January is going so far

Following on from my becoming consciously frugal video, I'm sharing how I track my spending and the actual numbers for 2025.

First shopping haul of 2025 in low spend January

As I still have 2 full freezers and a decently stocked storecupboard, I did a wee shopping haul to top up on a few staples. Some of it will last me into next month and beyond

Hi Ali, when I make Lasagne I put a layer of Lasagne sheets in between the mince and the white sauce (I make Cheese sauce to go in mine) and it bulks it out more with the extra carbs so you can do smaller portions.
Thanks for making your videos Ali….you’ve inspired me to cook from scratch and batch cook. Are you able to point me to your Turkey meatloaf recipe pse? I’m so glad you decided to keep some of your advertising income yourself….you totally deserve it!
It was from this video but I don't show how to make it, I just talk about it and show the result. It's so simple, it's just the turkey mince mixed with half a packet of the stuffing mix made up and baked in a loaf tin th-cam.com/video/GzP9Vq3p5l8/w-d-xo.html
@ Thanks Ali
This is great, thank you. Any chance of a pasta sauce demonstration? I know I could google it but it’s much better to see a normal person demonstrate it as you have here. Cheers
Ali can I ask how spicy the curry paste is, as I don't like a really spicy curry. Thanks.
It's medium spicy. But the beauty of making your own is you can take out the chilli to suit your own heat level. If you don't like the heat maybe just add a pinch of chilli flakes or even skip it all together :-)
Hi Ali Farmfoods are very reasonable for frozen vegetables. I have problems cutting up veg for soup, so i just buy them already prepared from Farmfoods. You should check it out😊
Wow, 28p is cheap enough! I will give it a go.
With the Lidl Plus app you get free”stuff” when you spend a certain amount in their shop. I am going to pick up my free vegetable today.
Ali, im only just realising you have a blog page aswell. You must be so busy!?
Lol!! I've been a blogger for years but less so since I started vlogging. I mainly use it to write the details that I mention in videos. I use Blogger instead of a website as it's free!
Big batches are the business. My freezer is full from doing a soup week! A curry week sounds like a spot on idea Ali 🤔 I could happily do a curry month actually 😋 yummy! Curries are so versatile, our family favourite is having lamb in the curry. Oh my goodness, 7 in the morning and I'm salivating 🤤
yes with whole flour chapatis
Awesome video as usual Ali.
Awesome video Ali.
Try Iceland for frozen vege. I always get it there. Sometimes they have good deals. Another tip is using Quorn mince to add to beef mince. It helps not only the texture but you get a lot more mince and I freeze the excess. Add garlic, tinned tomatoes and herbs to the mince and you get Bolognese sauce. Then taken another portion and add chilli and kidney bean and you get Chilli Con Carne. Three different dishes from mince and Quorn mix.
I split my base sauce into bolognaise and chilli aswell😊 Instead of mince I used green lentils. Also I don't know why but the chilli always tastes so much better in the slow cooker 🤷♀️
same here but im a veggi gran in meat eating family, i dont waste anthing
Will need to try make that curry paste. I tried the fake lidl head and shoulders shampoo and did not like it. I prefer the pro vitamin lidl one, its a bit thicker. Also, i just discovered lidl off cut 1kg bacon for £1.99. I have used it for soup, sandwiches and pasta over last 2 weeks
Loving the vibrant colours especially the rugs, lampshades and paintings. Also Loving the light colour settee and pouffe. The kitchen is lovely and just enough really for one person. Great decking and garden too. Well done for what you have achieved so far. Your home will have more emotional value from what you create for it and do to it yourself. Well done you are doing amazing 👏 😊❤️
I rarely go to Aldi/Lidl because it seems to be a three hour round trip on foot. I've never worked out how! Maybe it's the heavy backpack plus trolley, and all the roads I have to cross. But I'll be worse off after April. So, earlier in the week I knew I would be already be halfway there, so I took my shopping trolley and went to Aldi after my meeting (spent about £13). A few days later, when I knew I would be 1/4 the way there, I did the same and went to Lidl (spent about £12). This time I took more notice of the prices, and didn't buy anything that was only a penny or two different from the Tescos in my town centre. So now I feel I have a good idea what is best to buy in each shop. In future maybe I'll go to Aldi one month and Lidl the next! I'll look upon it as useful exercise.
This looks great will definitely make this Thank you👨🍳🇨🇦😋
Brilliant recipe, thanks 👏🏻
👍👍👍
This was a great video, Ali! Thank you so much for sharing your curry paste recipe. This I will definitely add to my recipe file. The cost for the amount made is incredible! It will be interesting to see what 12 portions cost me in Canadian dollars when I make it. Thanks, again, and many blessings!
Lidl Dazzle and Shine conditioner was free and I am delighted with the state of my (grey) hair after using it. Much cheaper than my usual Aussie. Lidl will now be my go to conditioner.
Free?
Lovely recipe for curry thanks 😊
Thanks Ali!! Brilliant!! I'll definitely be giving this a go. 👍xx
Thank you Ali, great recipe, very straightforward, will give it a go!
Dear Ali the Curry Paste looked absolutely delicious and when I am well enough, I would definitely love to try your recipe. Love Janet ❤
Thanks Ali another great video 📹 and yes I love a wee spicy curry 🍛 🌹🌹🌹
Lovely video! Thanks for the info, and you had a great, yummy looking Lidl haul!
Good Afternoon Ali and Luna ❤curry paste looks nice ❤
Great video Ali thank you for your time filming this video.
I can imagine you could live off £60 a month but I think if you did it for a long time it'd be extremely depressing, don't think I'd fancy it much , if I had to I think I could but I wouldn't do it through choice, good luck on your challenge though .
I couldn't do it if I didn't have a decent stocked store cupboard. And at some point you do have to spend money to fill it. But yes, it would be hard to do it long term. I'm so fortunate I don't need to :-)
I don’t know much about making curry paste. Do they all have tomato in them? I’m allergic to tomatoes so I have to find alternatives.
Oh that's a good question! I shall go do some investigating :-)
I didn't realise how much tomato was used in curry bases but it's totally possible to do it tomato free! I found this recipe for a home made Notmato Paste that I'd totally use instead of the can of chopped tomatoes savorynature.com/2014/02/14/notmato-paste-nightshade-free/
@ thank you so much.
Thanks for the demo.Don’t think I’ve ever seen curry paste being made before .
Something I only learned a few years ago is that raw root ginger freezes really well - previously I would buy it and end up throwing some of it away when it inevitbly shrivelled up. If you cut it up into 'thumb sized' pieces before freezing you can fish out however much you need for your recipe- no waste. Making your own curry paste is brilliant for tweaking the flavours to your favourite mix and the exact strength you prefer.
Thank you very much for that tip, I was just about to grate some ginger to freeze it but have now frozen it in chunks, much easier ❤
Yes, it grates really easily when just out of the freezer for a minute or two!
My Uncle, who was stationed in India during the war, used to laugh at those 'Ready Meal' curries in the 1970's ; he said they were NOT curry! Your recipe looks like the real thing ; and I wish I had smellovision while you were cooking it. Excellent value at 28p per portion £££.
My Grandad was stationed in India... everything apart from breakfast cereal and pudding had curry powder on it! He used it like salt and pepper 😊
My husband makes a fantastic chickpea curry which was passed down from his grandfather who was stationed in India. His key tip was a grated apple in the recipe 👌
Great video as always Ali, I buy bags of frozen pineapple and mango from Lidl, brilliant for curries and porridge....
I looked for frozen pineapple but my Lidl didn't have any in stock. Some items are a bit hit and miss!
A lovely video, love the work in progress aspect. You remind me so much of myself. 😊
Thanks Ali for sharing this 🌻 I will give this a go this week xx thank you
love those onins im off to do an onins sandwich with real butter xxx granny eileen
That actually sounds really yummy. Cooked or raw onion?
@@michellethompson759 finely chopped raw in chese sandwich or well fried in white bread /real butter not sanswich
typo fried in white bread sandwich
@eileenspamer-kw3kz toasties coming up this lunchtime I believe 😋
❤
I agree. With £700/month income with no rent/mortgage you should definitely be able to pay for insurance by saving each month. Others don't have money from a house sale to draw on. I think you can do this. You might need to cut down more on some food as food is so expensive.
Best to save first 😊. I save before anything!
Teachers don't get paid enough!
Good stuff - I like it when there are specifics! Not being competitive but a few things jumped out - your broadband sounds high: we pay £27 with Plusnet speed 74Mb - never seem to notice a problem with speed. No landline on that so I suppose that makes it a bit cheaper (didn't miss the landline by the way). Our mobile is £6pm with Smarty - use wi-fi most of the time, but got 4GB of data and never use it all. Life insurance I would only have if I was working and had a family depending on my income, so not in retirement (unless it's for the dog?), just save that money instead in my humble opinion (same with funeral plans)
Since making this video I have made a few changes including getting rid of the life insurance. Internet and phone contract are combined and I'm locked into that deal atm. More recent videos detail my current figures :-)
@@aliliveswellonless Glad to hear that - there's always lots to keep on top of!
The philosophy I use is very simple: if you didn't know you needed it before you saw it, you don't need it.
Ali I have a question, are pensions adjusted for inflation in Scotland like here stateside? If I work for 25 years for my municipal employer I get a 2.5 % cost of living increase every October once I turn 65.
Yes they are although I'm not sure if it's annual.
We started off well then January decided to throws us quite a few curve balls!!! 2 new tyres & emergency repairs to our roof thanks to Storm Eowyn….thankfully we have an emergency fund 😮 We’ve decided to draw a line & start afresh for Feb I thought we did quite well on food shopping until I’ve seen yours & @tryingtogetby Jan totals & realised we can definitely shave more off these sections. Sadly not much olio been on offer in my area as these always help to boost our pantry & save us from sad pending.
Ali, when you set your budget for next year, will you add the car and house insurance to your fixed/direct debit page instead of it coming out of your disposable income?
Yes I will be :-)
THIS is why we wanted you to keep some TH-cam money!! ❤
Same here. Not a teacher but NHS worker on the admin side. My Trust owns my phone and PC on my desk. I've bought everything else, from staples and post-its to paperwork storage systems and folders. They get on average one extra day a week in free work beyond my paid hours. The system would simply not function as it does, without the free investment from a big portion of the staff. And don't even get me started on the Trust Volunteers and the amazing, often unsung, work they do.
Yep, there are a lot of public sector workers who go above and beyond their paid hours to make sure services are delivered
