The Delta Species are absolutely my favourite mechanic the TGC has done, I wish I can kept my old collection when I moved. When Terra Types were revealed I had some fond memories flood back into mind. Slowly rebuilding my collection of them but it's slow going aha
A capital delta "∆" represents change fields like math and physics. I think that's why they're called delta species, since they're changing types. The lowercase delta was probably used to maintain aesthetic consistency while still keeping the math roots of the delta symbol.
Finally, peak.
Charizard ex has 330hp and just searches energy for itself now...
Someone needs to make a gen 3 rom hack with all the Pokemon being their Delta Species types.
@@SSBBPOKEFAN that would be fun. With the recent leaks involving the Holon Region, it'd be interesting to see what they could do
i remember owning one of the many delta species deoxys cards as a kid.. very cool mechanic and card arts tbh. what's the song playing from around 5 mins onwards?
Delta Charizard was the first ever Charizard i ever pulled in a pack. It was acctuly my only Charizard until this year. Being my mom and dad seprated around the time, the Delta Species and collecting Pokémon cards helped during this time in my life. So yeah I have a fondness for this theme. I remember having an electric and grass and steel deck with Charizard and Beedrill.
@@matthewvandyk7773 the Beedrill delta is super cool
I think they reached their peak for special cards with the shining pokemon, because even though they were basics, they needed multiple types of energies and still had reasonable hp.
@tylersingleton9284 i think to some degree you'd be right balancing wise, but the shining had no support at all as a mechanic which led to nearly all of them being completely unusable in decks
@WhimsicottTCG true, but I think that was kind of the point. They had such low pull rates and had such cool art that as a kid, if you could pull off a win it was about the wow factor and bragging rights. They didn't make cards to be exclusively tactical. Back then, the TRADING part of pokemon was still tied to the CARD GAME part. The point was to showcase your rare cards and battle your favorite mons, not chase the newest scheme-y meta tactic.
@@tylersingleton9284 i think there needs to be a balance between collectability and playability. Too much of one (playability in ace spec, collectibility in the old shinings) leads to one side feeling unsatisfied
Peak TCG by far
@@ktvx.94 I'm a gen 4 tcg stan, but delta are pretty rad
I never realized the image frame was a double helix; I always thought it was a metal chain
3:06 thats a hand trap. In Pokemon. As a Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh fan thats insane
I like pokemon with these types of things like radients, gold stars, x pokemon, especially breaks but now raidents are rotatint 😢, BUT supporter pokemon are coming out later which will be interesting
Having been mostly familiarized with the most recent of pokemon sets, seeing these cards here is absolutely jaw-dropping to me. I always had concieved the notion that pokemon was just a strategically inferior card game to the likes of, say, MTG, but this set (and presumably others from around this time) have sparked an interest for pokemon TCG in me that i never knew i had. If only the modern sets could create cards with such strategic variation and could utilize the game's mechanics too such a thoughtful extent.
I love the Delta Species cards, grew up starting with the XY era TCG wise, and when I saw them, I actually got the Electric Pidgey, Charmander, and Charmeleon. Maybe I'll actually get to collect more of them someday, but since then I have gotten the Water Mimikyu and randomly getting a seemingly pre release Fire Seadra card somehow, still don't get how I got the Seadraw
@@Mimiyan_or_Pikapikafan good collecting goal for sure. Lots of them aren't too expensive either

This should have made a comeback maybe as the wild Tera Pokemon from the videogames. then you have actual Terastal Pokemon as a modifier or tag. Really it could have made a comeback with the ex mechanic and made terastalization it's own unique mechanic.
@@JaredGagne they've done a bit more to make Tera Pokemon their own thing, but it took way too long to do it
What is Melgen in Expanded?
@@Charmaster04 Meloetta/Genesect turbo fusion strike deck that KOs anything turn 1 going 2nd and chains the attacks with Special Charge
@@WhimsicottTCG Ah, that one. I remember now (All I could think of for the first syllable was "Melmetal," which I knew wasn't right). Also, do you know what's going on with the Ditto Prism Star buyout on TCGONE? I let a $5 Ditto sit in my cart for half an hour, and suddenly I couldn't find one for under $15. Is it sustainable, or will the price crash below its current $12 point?
@@WhimsicottTCG Oh, I remember now. Thanks. (I knew "Mel" couldn't stand for "Melmetal.") By the way, do you know what's going on with the Ditto Prism Star buyout? I literally had a $5 one in my cart, left my computer for half an hour to consider my card selection, and came back to find out I couldn't get one for less than $15.
I collected almost every Delta Species card sans for gold stars and some exs before Covif. I love this mechanic so much.

Gardy gamer spotted
1:31:49 The airborne land sharks are strong with this one. (You know what? That decides it. Delta Species Garchomp would be a Fire type. It's already mastered the other three classic elements.) (How many more comments can I post on this video before TH-cam declares me a spammer again?)
I like TCGs from an outside looking in perspective but the fact that rotation doesnt do what its meant to do in TCGs makes me not want to go further into them. Pokemon and MTG are probably the games that have been powercrept slower than other ones IE yugioh or Vanguard the latter who got powercrept beyond anything in a couple of years. My going theory is that Yugioh is the end goal that most other card games are going to see itself as when they reach their end. A game were evolution/cost is irrelivant and you can spam out whatever you want as long as you own said cards in the first round.
I came for the games and stayed for the banter. Hearing you discuss random retro decks and formats was refreshing. I honestly want to try out Urshifu/Dark/Inteleon now. The mixture of the era's most unique engine, a primary attacker with two viable moves, and a tech Pokémon package makes it sound like one of the most involved decks in a largely bland era, and, more importantly, the tail end of my formational "competitive play-aware" phase. My brother built Sylveon/Urshifu/Blaziken from the SSH-EVS format, and we both enjoyed playing with and against it because of the numerous lines of play... I may have discovered many worthier formats since then, but nostalgia makes the hobby go 'round, and the best part about retro is being able to revisit whatever formats you want to.
Holon region is best region! Delta pokemon are my all-time favorite TCG gimmick, it's why I love 2007 format so much

@deltamico lol
I only opened one blister (3 packs) of delta species sets as a kid but I was instantly struck by the oddity and coolness of a lightning type Totodile. Only learned later that it was an actual archetype I just thought as a kid it was something cool and fun
Been waiting for this, delta species is by far my favorite tcg mechanic
One of my friends just told me about this and it’s such a weird coincidence you made a video on it now
@@ItsjustHydra woops
Another great video!
Wish I was around during this time
Way better than tera
Tera is literally just delta species but exclusively for ex mons that are immune to bench damage. If you have a problem with it, it's a problem with modern day powercreep, not Tera mons themselves.
@@Blastosie_Officalthe versatilty of the delta pokemon is one of their strengths. Teras existing as only final stage ex's holds them back in that regard. Delta also has way cooler and more fun archetypal support, but there is still time to fix that for teras
Tera bench protection is so stupid. But aside from that yeah, the mechanic is fine, the problem is on the way the game works nowadays which is just less deep and interesting. It would help to at least have way more tera pokemon tho, very few decks use even 2 different teras so you don't feel the whole coverage aspect
Amgous
this would look nice on a time plot
What kind of rules would you play with to ballance cards in the expanded?
@@deltamico i don't think there's a good way to balance expanded as it is now.
Your editing is really good! You’ve really found your stride and style- I’m still working on that myself. Nice job, I mainly play yugioh but I’ve been loving your videos
@@prestigedDL thanks for the kind words
7:53.. Less thinking, less bluffing, less any human interaction.. just get as sweaty as possible then rage on Reddit. What can go wrong 🤷
I don't think that power creep is necessarily a huge problem if done correctly, but I can't stand it when power creep is just making numbers bigger. I'm all for making more and more powerful cards if there is actually thought put into the cards and they are unique, but just adding 50 to a number is stupid.
@@twiley19 well, that's the problem is that it isn't done correctly
Weird question but do the cards you use get bend or damaged in any way when you play with them because theres a lot of movement?
@micahtemple I'm very nice to my cards, but that isn't the case for most players who riffle their cards while shuffling. If it makes you feel better, I sold a card I played for like a year to my local store and they graded it and it came back a PSA10
I now realize how annoying gigas stall is... (thank God I wasnt old enough to play during that format)
@micahtemple regigigas stall was absent for most of the format. Most people played the offense focused decks
@@WhimsicottTCG ah I see really love this format though so sad I missed it
the fact there’s an ability that just deletes your opponents energy is comedy

power creep lol more like autism
look at that autistic goofy art and jesus christ this is also ment for kids btw..... idk if any of you neckbeards understand that
My friends and I play expanded where we ban all rule box cards and do inverse prize cards. There's still power creep, but it's a more fun game, I think. It's still got the same problem that pokemon has had for the last 15 years: Every turn is a OHKO until somebody wins. I've moved on to playing e-series and also ex series. The games are much more fun.
@Joker22593 yeah anything before Black and White generally make for longer games with less ohkos. We had a slight return to form in 2017-18 but that was lost with the Tag Teams
