  • Today I go over the cards that made up one of the best sets of all time Guardians Rising. This set broke the format in half when it came out, redefining deck building for the next two years.

    Choice Band was accidentally left out during editing and is one of the most important cards in the set. Many of the other best cards in the set like Drampa GX are great in part due to how they pair with Choice Band (Berserk for 180)
    There's a few cards I didn't cover for sake of time:
    Aether Paradise, Altar of the Moone, Machoke, Dhelmise, Victini, Golisopod, Rayquaza, Oricorio Psychic, Sableye, Hala, Comfey, Aqua Patch, Energy Loto, Multi Switch, Wishiwashi GX

    Amazing video. Capturing the metagame of past sets like this is something that I appreciate and enjoy learning about more. I also feel like for the B/W and above sets you could also talk about how good many of these cards are in the main ongoing formats such as Expanded and GLC where they are still legal. It helps to emphasize how good the set is in my opinion. Cards such as Field Blower and Rescue Stretcher are used in every single deck in those formats to this day.

      It's a bit difficult to cover ongoing formats, but in standout cases I could maybe mention it.

      A lot of the GRI's cards impact falls off in SUM-LOT, but you can definitely feel them in 2017 Worlds. Hope we can play some PRC-GRI some day. It's the best way to enjoy the set :)

    No joke, I remember where I was half an hour after I saw the first Guardians Rising reveals on Pokémon's website (Which were probably already familiar to people watching Japanese card reveals at the time, but Pokémon's official website was my main source of Pokémon information back then). I was walking down to the pond by the culdesac at the end of my street, and I was contemplating cards like the new Garbodor and Rayquaza. This was back when the only Sun and Moon cards I owned were from a Decidueye theme deck, and the best Sun and Moon card I owned was Pinsir (My brother still gets PTSD whenever I mention that card, and he probably regrets ever letting me play 2016 Worlds Double Colorless Energy in my Pinsir deck unsleeved, although we didn't know what card sleeves were at that age). The Sun and Moon era still felt magical, and I would say I still feel a strong sense of nostalgia for this set. My brother even ended up building a Buzzwole GX & Lycanroc GX deck from a list he found on Pokémon's website, the year before lockdown. That was probably the tipping point for our movement from casual deck building to competitive deck building, but the real catalyst would be The Player's Cup.

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the main reason he built Buzzwole GX was because he pulled a Buzzwole GX from the Buzzwole GX and Xurkitree GX Premium Collection mom got him for Christmas when it was on sale at Target or Costco. It instantly became one of his favorite Pokémon (If it hadn't been already), and having two of the same basic GX was already great grounds for building a deck... after pulling a Zygarde EX from a Scizor EX Box (And possibly after I despaired of ever beating his janky Blastoise/Golduck BREAK/Palkia GX/Hydro Pump singleton deck with my Rayquaza GX League Battle Deck with the Pikachu & Zekrom promo thrown in)(True story, lost to Zero Vanish GX almost every time. Probably a skill issue, but still), he found out about the list on Pokémon's website and decided to buy the remaining cards.

    5:22 Out of curiosity, which matchups does Shell Trap swing? I figured it would be useful in some situations, but making unfavorable matchups favorable was a lot more than I was expecting!

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Charmaster04 it was famously used by Andrew Mahone to top 8 NAIC 2017 with his Zoroark Drampa deck. Shell Trap guaranteed that even if Metagross GX healed off the base damage they would take 80 from the recoil, so they would be in range of Berserk

    Now I have a question about more recent formats. What’s your current opinion on Regidrago VSTAR in the 2024 Worlds format? Is it as discouraging to play against as Turbo Iron Hands in Battle Styles through Temporal Forces? Or does the ability to copy Kyurem’s Trifrost not ruin enough games to warrant the same frustration as Turbo Iron Hands or Lugia?

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Darkrai EX actually still saw some success at NAIC despite Garbodor's presence. Part of it is the resistance to Psychic, but also Yveltal Oblivion Wing, which allows you to set up with less items.

    @WhimsicottTCG What would you say the most fun decks of PRC-GRI are? Still weighing whether I want to start buying staples for it and/or SUM-LOT, and I’m trying to figure out what to test to gauge my enjoyment of the formats. (Fun SUM-LOT suggestions would be appreciated too.)

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fun for PRC-GRI: Volcanion EX, ZoroDrampa, Decidueye (Plume isn't fun for most people though), VikaBulu, TrevGarb, Espeon Garb, Drampa Garb (I love Garb), M Gardevoir, Metagross GX, Darkrai, Gyarados AOR, Rainbow Road, Sylveon Control
      Less fun imo: Lapras, Alolan Ninetales, Vespiquen/Zoroark, Greninja BREAK (people love this deck, I think its top 5 least fun decks in the history of the game), M Rayquaza
      Fun for SUM-LOT: Greninja/Meganium, ZoroRoc, BuzzGarbShrine, Cofagrigus (not good though), Honchkrow/Weavile, Gardevoir GX, Empoleon (Not good though), ZoroDos, ZoroDeciTales (fun, but also very OP), Granbull, Dusk Mane, Solgaleos, Malamar Unec, Malamar Psychic, Meganium Spread, NagQuag, VikaRay, Sceptile, Shuckle Stall, White Kyurem
      Not fun imo: Alolan Exeggutor (only does one thing, people like it though), Blowns (most people don't like it, I think it's fine), Buzzwole (deck is bad), Glaceon locks (not that strong, but sometimes frustrating), ZoroControl, Swampert Control, Lost March (other people think its fun, I think its mind rotting), Malamar Spread, Kokosimmians (suffocating to play against), RegiWallStall, Steelix/Wailord Stall

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WhimsicottTCG Thanks! Now I have a better idea what decks to avoid! Which decks on these lists would you say are the most fun? (I'm guessing "Greninja/Meganium" would be your first answer.)
      I have a friend who seemed fascinated by Shuckle GX back in the fall of 2018 and who might play the format again with me (He quit Pokémon when Tag Teams were printed, but he also loves Nightmarch and is considering getting back into the game because he thought M Rayquaza EX looked like a fun deck and would be excited to play its spiritual successor, so you might not be surprised to learn he switched to Yu-Gi-Oh). By "Shuckle Stall," do you mean the one on ptcglegends, with the Girafarig and the Oranguru and the Carbink and the 2-2 Sceptile line? Is there a better list?
      Glad you called me out before I built Kokosimmians, but out of curiosity, why the "guilty" verdict?

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Charmaster04 Shuckle can be built in tons of different ways since its really just a piece of stall. I just think its less oppressive than oranguru controls and wallstall.
      Kokosimmians just hits unreal numbers to the point where if they just hit what they need they pretty much always win against evo decks. Even stuff like 230HP garde isnt out of range

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WhimsicottTCG Tons? ptcglegends also showed a list pairing it with Hoopa, Xurkitree GX and Magikarp & Wailord GX, and a list pairing it with Hoopa, Regigigas, Articuno GX and Unown HAND. Do you mean to say there's more of them? What else have you seen?
      Yikes. Maybe Kokosimmians DID deserve to get fouled in your gauntlet tournament.
      Also, seeing what decks were and weren't fun has kind of answered my question about SUM-LOT. I've already played a dozen or so games of the format against James G on TCGONE. He was playing mostly Oranguru decks and Wall Stall, and it wasn't fun watching him Steven's Resolving for the perfect three cards while I was still shuffle-drawing for an out, usually a Guzma I'd have to wait a turn to play or a Switch or Escape Rope I ran only one or two copies of. I've enjoyed playing against Ratlock or Cradilylock with Queendom in EX block, and I'm not as concerned about Stantler decks with how much I play DragTrode, but playing against Oranguru or Regigigas felt disheartening. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding why I wasn't as crazy about the format, but I think SUM-LOT is a format I will probably just participate in if somebody asks me or the opportunity arise, rather than being one I build a bunch of decks for, especially when I could build battle styles through Paradox Rift, a format with mostly fun and evenly matched decks featuring a variety of unique strategies and engines.

    • @WhimsicottTCG
      @WhimsicottTCG  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Charmaster04 Yeah SUM-LOT isn't fun if you play or play against control most of the time. The games are very high skill, but not exactly thrilling. Most people play SUM-LOT casually with fun decks that are still meta.
