HS was a really pretty era. I wasn't a fan of the PRIMEs back then (and still not a huge fan now), but I think the era just aesthetically stands out a lot and also is in the last part of the pre-modern golden age
Just discovered this gem of a channel, I started collecting as a kid when Black & White base was out, however there was still some HGSS of shelves so I got a little bit of that too. I specifically remember that magmortar card you showed, probably still have it in a pile of non holos somewhere 😂
@@WhimsicottTCG yesss thats why I got back into the TCG after skipping sun and moon and sword and shield, the illustration rares are so cool and the new art directive is amazing, they are like the black and white full arts with better backgrounds imo
Junk Arm is slightly worse, since it can only grab Trainers, which referred to Items. Even after BW changed terminology for Trainers to Items, it was still only able to grab the equivalent of Item cards. Dowsing Machine can grab Supporters and Stadiums in addition to Trainers (Items)
@ true, it was a strictly worse dowsing machine. Though dowsing was mostly used for items during its time, right? Obviously it’s still better than Junk Arm, but crazy how a small buff was still enough to warrant it being an ace spec
I do have a video on Guardians Rising! I tried to do one on Phantom Forces, but I'm not familiar enough with early XY meta to cover some of the more niche cards. SWSH is probably on the list along with the other big base sets, but idk when

@@WhimsicottTCG You're... resetting the sand so you don't survive the fall? I don't get what's happening anymore. Don't jump off any VMAX's until I've figured out which EX era set had the highest density of playable cards. My mind jumped to "Delta Species," but I'm sure the top 3 most playable sets from that era or even the top 5 would be pretty close.
(Also, you're a Whimsicott, so I don't think you'd die from fall damage. My brittle little Charmander bones, however, wouldn't survive a surprise visit from the forces of gravitation.)
Would have been cool if you also talked about some Legacy decks with some cards that it would fit well with. Some examples include Celebi Prime and Ditto. Celebi imo is the best prime card if we count Legacy because it enabled Virizion Genesect to be able to hit 200 turn 1 pretty easily and it's even possible to use red signal turn 1 whilst doing 200 damage. Also ditto is a staple card in that deck to shut down Victini that does 100 damage which OHKOs Virizion and Genesect EX after applying weakness. Oh one more example is the Mew Prime shenanigans with Crustle, Reuniclus, Vileplume, and Serperior. The deck aimed to get Cradilly in the lost zone with Mew so that Mew could copy Lifesplosion which with 3 energy on Mew (one being a DCE) can put Serperior, Vileplume, and Reuniclus straight on the bench. You pretty much just win at that point since Reuniclus moves damage around, Serperior can heal ALL OF IT, and Crustle has sturdy making it always be at 90HP which you can spread between all of you Pokemon to infinitely heal off.
I try not to mention formats that are not historically played, especially with how insular the development of legacy was. Some of the legacy decks are cool, and maybe deserve their own video someday, but aren't worth bringing up in these videos.
@@WhimsicottTCG Ahh yeah -- I just love Legacy and wish more people talk about it regarding the HGSS-BW era. I also forgot to mention how broken junk arm became once Exeggcute, Ace Specs, and Sableye came out lol
There are people out there still singing legacy's praises, and I've done 2 games on the format myself, but it's a complicated beast, especially with its two versions (ban vs. banless) that completely change how the format is played
@@WhimsicottTCG On the topic of two versions of it ban vs banless, I know that the turn 1 rules were different on PTCGO vs TCGOne. Before PTCGO shut down the turn 1 rules didn't let you play a supporter and on TCGOne is does. Small difference I know, but it does make a change in some decks. So would you also count that as more versions or formats of Legacy or no? Also what do you find complicated about the format? Unless you mean the two versions (ban vs no bans) is what makes it complicated to new players. Also also I watched your format tier list (and your videos on Legacy) and you seem to like Legacy based on your placement, does that still hold up / what ranking would you give it out of 10? What are some changes you think that could improve the format as well. Apologies for this long comment, I just obsess over Legacy haha :D
I think the multiple first turn rules, errata catcher, and legalities of the format present a more complicated set of rules to present to a casual fan than other formats, where you can just hand them a deck. I do think the supporter rule change makes a huge difference in viability of cards like Pokémon Collector. I enjoy Legacy casually. I don't think I'd love playing it a ton, especially banless bc there are a lot of decks that aren't fun to play against and random BS still like laser donks that ruin a competitive environment. Probably like 7/10 with bans played with errata XY -SM first turn rules.
I swear tcg players across every game dont understand metas are completely artificial. Like theyre informed by a lot of factors not just the objective quality of a deck. When playing older formats, have respect for what was historically good but remember they were limited by a lot of factors you arent with a worse understanding of the theory of how the game works, so you dont need to stick to their meta. You might just crack that old format wide open via expeeimenting.
There are plenty of TH-camrs who do reviews of TCG art. To highlight one of my favorites, Saturninebear. I am not an artist, so I cannot provide commentary on art other than "I like it" or pointing out its in game counterpart. If you want to learn more about art lore, I suggest DeltaSeeker.
Also sets are kind of awful to judge with art in international sets since they mishmash Japanese sets partially together, which removes the thematic and artistic vision of the Japanese version. Japan's Lost Link set was split in half, with half to be put in Triumphant, and the other half thrown in Call of Legends.

I just love the aesthetics of this era. The ashy yellow borders really complete the look, and I miss them!
