- 2014 would debut of the craziest sets we've ever seen, full of cards that would become Standard and Expanded staples

Cards I didn't include that weren't super good or interesting:
Gourgeist (45/119) - apparently was used in some early Night March decks according to what I've heard
Pyroar (12/119) - saw use in some Pyroar FLF decks as a useful tool, and in some Chandelure UNM decks later in Expanded
Honchkrow (52/119) - I've seen this used in a Hypno BKP deck, but I don't think it was ever good.
Goodra (77/119) - Was used in some Expanded stall decks that revolved around locking out Supporters, Tools, and Stadiums from the opponent.
Please remember that I don't cover reprints like Double Colorless Energy, Professor Sycamore, Shauna, etc - เกม
When I had suggested Phantom Forces i was thinking of vs, comp and night march. had completely forgotten just how buck wild they went with this set, so many hugely powerful cards that are still expanded defining
Loved this retrospect!
Love Phantom Forces, but man, 2.25 years of playing against Nightmarch was brutal.
Every other match was Nightmarch.
2 fn years.
Yeah... I'm glad I missed this period and can revisit it with fun decks instead
I absolutely love this series! As someone who's been in and out of the Pokemon TCG for a while it's nice seeing stuff I missed, and love the format/way you present it! Looking forward to the next one!
I recently discovered you're channel and it's rather surreal seeing you call out my all time favorite/nostalgic sets as being notably great. I remember going to league was my favorite day of the week all the way up to the end of highschool. It's so sad seeing how expensive/borderline unplayable the game's become lately.
The game is actually at one of its cheapest points ever! Charizard ex/Pidgeot ex just won the most recent event and about 80% of the deck can be obtained by buying the Charizard ex League Battle Deck which MSRPs for only $30. It can be tuned up for around $20 to get the rest of the pre-made deck up to par with the current meta.
The game is in a pretty bad spot playability wise though
@@WhimsicottTCG Wow that is cheap! Maybe my perception of high cost is from the fact I use to play unlimited back then. I used a lot of supporters like Cilan, Skyla, Marley's Request, Bebe's Research, and Fisherman. Some of them like Cilan were very much not cheap because everyone wanted them.
Awesome Video, very informative. Awesome Set. So many innovative and powerful cards. Back then, I had so much fun creating new decks with all these cards and playing with them. In real life, you're lucky if you can call Dialga EX 122 Fullart your own.
this set was so insane and fun at the time. people always sleep on how insane this set was
Why doesn’t PTCGL have full expanded!!! I miss being so toxic in PTCGO, the nostalgia from this deck. I still have my VS Seekers and Battle Compressors in real life
@@yesimforreal ptcgl isn't adding anything because people stopped complaining
Oddly enough PTCGL does have expanded cards as far back as Black and White sets but they are unsuasable even juts for practice. I've been a casual collector of pokemon cards since I was super young but only got into the app recently. I tried scanning all of the old promo cards for the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online (it wasnt called live yet) I have in the back of my Binder and all of them worked, giving me cards, packs, and decks as far back as the black and white set that had Team Plasma's Pokémon ( i forget the name) but all the cards are illegal in expanded and standard.
I am able to use the coins it gave me tho.
Love VS Seeker
One of my greatest memories is pulling the silver Dialga in an Apple Bees 💙✨
Raw
What if Lysandres trump card was reprinted in unbanned? In current format, I’d think that would be funny
that would be funny
We'd go back to a not fun meta
As an ace spec supporter, maybe.
Still busted even today
Forgot to mention uh
Pal pad exists lmao
That thumbnail alone got me to subscribe!! Funny how I stopped playing during the phantom force era, then fast forward 10 years, im here collecting my missing gengar pieces 🥹
damn it is very nostalgic, miss these times
Just found your channel and love your videos. Been binging them 🔥
I really really want a Bronzong style card back in format, I was hooked on Flaaffy/miraidon and miss it really bad
There are always so many different and cool strategies that get enabled by these cards. Even though I only highlighted Metalbox, Tyrantrum ex, M Rayquaza ex, Raichu XY, and a few others all were enabled by Bronzong. Great cards
Such a nice set. I just like the style
Love these videos mate
have some of the greatest cards from phantom forces when i was younger, Full art Gengar and silver Dialga
Massive congrats on the 1000 subscribers!!!! 🎉
Thank you so much!
I remember this set being so cool I offered to mow a few lawns for a weekend just to buy a booster box.
Worth it
When I first started playing the tcg 😭
I can hear the back pain and shaky knees in this comment
MY ERA THANK U TO MY DAD FOR BUYING ME PACKS WHEN I WAS 13 AND DRIVING ME TO TOURNAMNETD
Goated Dad
PHANTOM FORCES MENTIONED
@@morpphh it is a lot of phantom forces mentioned
can confirm Lysandres trump card won me so many games in Junior div trust
you probably gave those juniors Post Traumatic Toad Disorder
@@WhimsicottTCG Wasnt even on Toad it was just a great one of in any deck. Helped me recycle stuff for game all the time like Blacksmith, Torch, Scorched earth etc
Phantom Forces is easily one of the most broken sets of all time
Absolutely!
5:07 A teaser! I knew Neo Genesis was the next video!
...
That was a joke, by the way. Although Neo Genesis was easily the most impactful set of the Neo era, possibly up until that point when you consider how gradual the shift towards not letting your opponent play on turn 1 was, unless you count Psyduck in Dark Vileplume (Not letting your opponent play from turn 2 onwards is a different story, considering how immediate Dark Vileplume's impact was). Think about it... between Cleffa and the nine relevant Trainers in the set (There were a whopping 21 in total), Neo Genesis redefined how players drew cards, endured damage and preserved Special Energy, and it also introduced the most powerful attackers of both Standard and Modified, Sneasel and Feraligatr. Other Neo sets introduced new decks, but aside from a few Stadiums and EXP.ALL, the main thing existing decks gained was Tyrogue (And Igglybuff, for those condemned to play under Wizards' mistranslations).
(I spent waaaaay too long writing my response to what was meant to be a brief moment of comedic relief. Now I've broken my immersion.)
I want to do Neo Genesis, but I have no reference for the playability of the cards other than Jason's Blog and some tabletop videos. I have not played more than 1 game of 2002 and no 2001, so I really can't make a video that's as good
I use these to look at the cool art
@@hatsudopia5085 fair enough
@@WhimsicottTCG you doing God's work ty
X and Y was a really good era for the game once you got to the point Pokemon Company made it a lil more complex imo. Once Megas had spirit links theyre probably my fav gimmick pokemon cause having to run a specific item and evolve is a very inherently balanced trade off for the power creep they represented. Except Semitoad, that card was a design mistake.
@philbuttler3427 Seismitoad was a necessary evil that held back stuff like Night March that win on turn 1. XY really only got good imo again in my opinion when they rotated year 1 and even then it was super item sacky because of Trainers Mail and Shaymin EX
MegaMan for set cover!!! lol
pulled the secret dialga from this set :)
@@donny2hatz good pull
LETS GOOOOO
Mew3 gx expanded, man..... the absolute horror i brought into ptcgo. Turn one wins, complete shut downs of any attackers.
when i was younger (not as competitive) i thought lysandres trump card was banned for political reasons lol
@@purpleguydeadly4235 cancel culture has gone too far 😔

i have never played ptcg in my life but these videos are great :D
